What a strange thing for Donald Trump to say at his Christian rally. He said if they vote for him, it will be fixed so they never vote again. Why would anyone vote for THAT ? Am I misunderstanding something here?

Vote once and never vote again
(107 Posts)I wonder if he knows what he is saying , as half the time his speeches are contradictory and make little sense.
Rather Putinesque
Because the US will be under a dictatorship?

Rather Putinesque
EXACTLY my immediate reaction!
He wants to put an end to democracy and run the USA as a dictatorship.
He has repeatedly made known his admiration for authoritarian leaders, including Putin, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. And a former White House aide reported that Trump once said Adolf Hitler “did some good things”.

I think we need to be very afraid and afraid of those in this country who so doggedly support him.
I heard it, and no, you weren’t misunderstanding Macadia. Newsweek summary of exactly what he said, and initial reactions here.

I think this might be a defining moment in the election campaign.
Goodness, yes this is exactly what Trump would like, him as POTUS til he dies!
He’s a dangerous lunatic!
Presumably he thinks his term as Pres will be so good that he’ll be Pres for life! Delusional or just crazy?
He us both of those things Oreo. The man needs locking up , his followers behave as though he is some sort of God!! He is a cult figure and a very dangerous man .

I utterly agree!

It’s ironic that this address was to a conservative summit, which had the theme to "unite Christians across America”. Surely Christians would favour democracy not dictatorship and would resist Trump setting himself up as an all powerful leader for life?
Donald Trump's age is now being used against him, just as he used Biden's age against him!
A Newsweek poll since Biden stood down and was replaced by Kamala Harris shows that over 50% of voters feel that Trump is too old to be in government.
When the choice was between Trump and Biden, both old men, age, of itself, was not an issue, but now Biden has been replaced by Harris, nearly 20 years Trump's junior. Suddenly age is an issue.
Harris is also expected to attract many women voters away from the Republicans because of its stance on reproductive issues. Already a Reuters/IPSOS poll shows her 2% ahead of Trump.
Trumps speech to a Christian convention in Florida and what he said, will put a chill in anyone's spine. However making such remarks to a rightwing religious group, will not help his cause with women, or the majority of young people.
He wants to be King of America and give his children the right to inherit the position. Why not?We still have that archaic system surely it’s good enough for the USA. Maybe he forgot the American war to rid themselves of monarchy. Someone should remind him
I hate to say this, and any Christian’s on here please don’t be offended or think I mean you, BUT there are some very odd little clutches of god-fearing church-going fanatics across the USA, they have so very odd ideas.

Strange analogy. What he’s suggesting is nothing like the role of a king, or indeed of UK royalty paddyann54, he is talking about dictatorship, where he as president can make any decision about USA he wants to, and can’t be clhallenged. Think Putin, not King Charles.
Oh Cossy, I'm a Christian and I couldn't agree more.

It’s hardly the same though is it? Our monarchy wield very little power. Trump wants the powers, the riches and the right to pass all this down to his sons!

Thank you. I once went to a “USA Christian Summer Camp” Years and years and years ago. My parents didn’t realise it was so religious, I was 15 and I’ve never forgotten it! It was quite odd!
He’s 78 and sounding increasingly delusional. His demise would automatically elevate Vance to President which is also terrifying, for women especially - unless America wants Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale to become reality.
How about this?
This thinking sounds perverse because it is. It must be understood within the framework, not of governing, but of a game with one necessary victor. Success, stability and predictability are boring. Why not see how far you can push the people who support you? If you can still win with the most danger, the most excitement, inflicting the most damage, why not try? (Jonathan Lis for Byline Times)
It wasn’t written about Trump but about a recent Prime Minister seen in Milwaukee with Trump. No prizes. It’s the game of the narcissist, people who are even more dangerous when the position they crave is threatened and there’s no doubt Trump is running scared of Harris.
"Surely Christians would favour democracy not dictatorship and would resist Trump setting himself up as an all powerful leader for life?"
Casdon, have you seen the sort of Christians who back him? They are the ones that dwell in the bible belt. Their views are extreme right wing and they treat Trump as a sort of messiah. I watched a programme on it and it was very disturbing. Their brand of Christianity has little in common with anything we would recognise in Europe.
My brother lived and worked in America for a number of years flappergirl, and he said the biggest mistake we make in the UK is in expecting that because we share a language and some elements of culture, that average Americans think like we do. He said that in fact they are as different from us as people from any other country. Your post illustrates that well, and you're right.
Casdon I couldn't agree more. DH used to travel to some of the less visited parts of the US and worked for American companies and he too said that we should not let a common language delude us into thinking we have a common culture
In fact our culture is much more in line with European cultural norms, but an education system that downvalues the teaching of foreign languages has driven a divide between us

I worked for a year in the mid west (Uni of Nevada) where people are comparatively outgoing and laid back. You can be anything you want to be in Vegas. Its when you travel to other parts of the USA you get to realise that we Brits have culturally more in common with Europe. There are some deep pockets of very scary people in the USA - such as the suvivalists and "armed" Christians. Its those types that Trump appeals to.
Biglouis I certainly agree
