Recently returned from the USA where we were able to purchase a tub of 500 of each of these. I appreciate we live in a different country but over here we can only buy 2 x 16 tablets at a time. Don’t know if it’s true but we were told it’s to prevent people from taking an overdose. Surely if someone is that desperate they will just go around different stores to purchase more.

Ibuprofen/Paracetamo l
(122 Posts)Yes that's the reason. Sadly I agree with you, if some poor person is so distraught they want to take their live they will just go store to store or build up a stash over a few days.
Please, always take food with Ibuprofen. You probs know that already.
Yes, they can build up a stash, but there are still people who don't realise how easy it ease to overdose and might do accidentally.
I put my paracetamol through & then go to another checkout & buy another pack. Otherwise I’d be the super market every other day buying parrots.

Yes you are right. Some people don’t have a clue, especially the young about the dosage, or how many hours apart the dosage should be.
There Should be more awareness on taking paracetamol.
You can by 84 ibuprofen in Boots or any Pharmacy and the high strength 400mg . They used have to alert the pharmacist but I don't think it happens now.

That's up to you. If you're actually trying to kill yourself (which I hope not), at least you're being made to think about it.
Personally, I'm quite grateful that we live in a country where we don't hear too often about people like Matthew Perry.
Agree about awareness. A highly intelligent friend had been taking both paracetamol and a cold cure also containing paracetamol for several days. They simply hadn't read the warnings on the cold cure packaging Marched off to A&E they were assessed and given a lecture on what could have happened. I’m still not sure how they couldn’t have known.
As my body reacts badly to anything stronger I am prescribed 8 paracetamol a day along with ibuprofen and an appropriate stomach protector. A GP’s comment years ago was people who are considering ending their lives via paracetamol will do so no matter the restrictions on purchase. She was insistent I accepted the prescription to avoid trawling outlets and raising suspicion. I was and am very appreciative.
One can also buy via Amazon. It saved me a painful trip to my local pharmacy.
If one was buying regularly from the same pharmacy, the staff would soon notice and call a pharmacist.

If you need paracetamol on a regular basis, why don't you get a repeat prescription from the GP?
I confess that I am never likely to want to buy ibuprofen or paracetamol. Firstly, I'm allergic to ibuprofen and it's not recommended anyway because of my medical history.
Secondly, I have Co-dydramol 10/500 on repeat prescription, which is paracetamol with a dihydrocodeine boost. I don't order it every month, as I don't take it every day and sometime have a surplus. I was taking paracetamol for a recurrent pain, when I mentioned it to my GP, who told me it was more effective and safer to take Co-dydramol.
A large overdose of paracetamol guarantees several days of agony as your kidneys slowly fail. It's not an easy option. People don't know that.
It's good to have precautions around its purchase..
My tum cant take Ibuprofen, happily pain levels aren't that bad and I have a small amount of tramadol that is benign for me. (Its an opioid, therefore addictive, therefore only given long term when there are no other options, as you have to steadily take more as time passes)
I agree with the above about buying more paracetamol if you want it by going to several shops. However having witnessed patients dying from paracetamol overdose when I was nursing I would never wish thst death on anyone no matter how distressed they were.
Anything which makes someone more hesitant about taking their own life must be worth doing.
No twaddle I take them for my knee pain. I buy a few boxes a week.
I can’t get paracetamol off the Gp as I am already getting co-codamol.
I am trying to reduce the dosage of co codamol by taking one of each.

I agree. A lot of people just don’t realise how dangerous paracetamol can be.
Just because I am buying two boxes at a time doesn’t mean I want to end my life.
Just saving me time & petrol.

& that is why there needs to be more awareness made of this drug.
Some people pop them like sweets.
I think Mathew Perry was on a lot more than paracetamol twaddle.
& then there are the old folk who stock pile boxes containing 100 or more.

Yes, I know he was, but the principle is the same. This OP was about being able to obtain large quantities of paracetamol in the USA.
I agree with you that some people pop pain killers like sweets. I'm not sure that restricting quantities works, but I suppose it stops people having hundreds of the things at home.
If you overdose on purpose (or by accident) with paracetamol it takes several days for your liver to pack up. How many people have regretted it before they finally die?

You shouldn't need paracetamol if you're already taking co-codamol. Co-codamol is paracetamol and codeine, so you're already taking paracetamol. It would be dangerous to take paracetamol on top of co-codamol.
Given that both Ibuprofen, paracetamol (and aspirin) have expiry dates, I don't think it is wise to sell them over the counter in large quantities. Most people use them on an 'as and when' basis so large quantities are liable to go out of date before being needed. Also, not everybody disposes of drugs safely so they are quite likely to end up in with the general rubbish.
Indeed. If you are taking both you need to check very carefully the next allowed dose of paracetamol look at how much is in the cocodamol and do the maths so that your total daily intake of paracetamol is within the limit.
Preferably don't do it at all!!
I watched a teenage lad surface from a paracetamol overdose and regret his action ... and then dies slowly and painfully from liver failure over the next few days.
Not to be forgotten ...
