Denosumab injection For osteoporosis

I have exactly the same problem! I’m 68.

I spoke to a Clinical Pharmacist yesterday who was helpful but I still don’t know what to do. It would be so helpful to hear how others cope.

Rock and hard place comes to mind.

I've been on it for years. I'm not aware of it doing me any harm, nor indeed of it doing me any good as they do not check with DEXAs. I have asked but they just do not.

It seems that if I try the first injection and have bad side effects I can discontinue it with very little chance of getting the ‘rebound’ effect of stopping. So that is probably what I will do. If it doesn’t work out I am inclined to refuse any treatment after that and continue my regular exercise routine - and hope for the best.

And eat calcium rich foods - I also take a prescribed calcium and Vit D supplement.

I take Adcal-D via consultant and Glucosamine have done for many years and my osteoporosis is now Osteopenia so it's obviously working.

I have osteoporosis but hate taking tablets and have stopped. I am doing more exercises and taking vitamins D and K. It’s difficult to know what to do for the best really as so many tablets have side effects.

Had it for over a year now. No issues so far and bone density’s improving slowly. The internet’s full of worst-case scenarios but you don’t usually hear from people who are just quietly fine on it. Give the first one a try and take it from there.

I was in such a panic on the way to the surgery for my first injection. I saw the nurse and explained that I wasn’t going to risk the side effects, so refused the injection.

I seem to be sensitive to medications and have a history of rare side effects. My main worry with this medication is that muscle pain is a common side effect. I attend 5 exercises a week for my health, and if I was unable to continue with these, I feel it would be detrimental to my physical and mental health.

I might be foolish in my decision. Time will tell. But all the treatments for osteoporosis seem too risky for me. I have already tried two, but had to stop due to side effects. I hope they come up with something better in the future.

I do sympathise. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis last year. I took Alendronic acid for 4 weeks but had to stop as I had excruciating gut pains..not heartburn but lower in my navel area. I was advised by the Royal Osteoporosis Soc to stop taking them for a few weeks and see if that side effect stopped. Which it did. The advice was to then return to the GP which I havent done yet.
I was also prescribed Adcal which resulted in debilitating constipation. My vit D and calcium blood levels are fine.
So I exercise and take vit D high strength and calcium rich foods. And will return to the GP at some stage.
I feel like you do. Had I not had a dexa scan I would not know I had osteoporosis as I have not ...so far... had any fractures. My life at the mo has enough problems without gut pains which had me doubled up or horrible constipation making me cry.
I do take great care in avoiding falls.
