You will probably have an internal scan and biopsies taken. You may have to have a colposcopy under general anaesthetic. I am assuming that the cysts are on the cervix? I’m not sure why you are seeing a urologist and not a gynaecologist though. I’ve had both the above procedures and just had polyps removed and no further treatment, but I have known people who have had to have a hysterectomy if the cysts were large.

If the cysts were on the cervix I cannot understand why you have been referred to Urology, so assume they are elsewhere. I visited Urology a while back because I had traces of blood in my urine. They performed a cystoscopy, which is a camera examination of the bladder. This wasn't even uncomfortable and I watched the screen. An early urethral caruncle (Google it), which looks a bit cyst-like and shows externally in the vulva, was found for which I was prescribed vaginal pessaries. If you have something like this I can assure you the hospital visit is nothing to worry about.

Thank you ladies. Maybe I have that wrong then and it is not the cervix. The smear test was terribly painful - usually just uncomfortable and then the doctor said about the cysts. I previously had no idea they were there - no signs at all.
I wonder why the urology then and not gynae? Oh dear.

I have ovarian cysts and cysts on my cervix ,had over a year of hospital checks etc and was told they would be ok to leave ..but I could have them removed if I wanted.Being a coward I kept them ..I get intermittent bleeding but its not something that worries me as I know what causes it.I will have another check on them towards the end of the uear.Good luck ,hope yours aren't what my doctor calls "sinister"

may I ask how yours were found? They didn't say mine were on the ovaries
I don't experience any problem with them, apart from painful smear test
I am a coward too , so if a choice is there I will probably decline!

It may be that you have been referred to a urogynaecologist? This would cover both urology and gynaecology.

letter says urologist. Getting worried now

I had heavy bleeding and pain in my abdomen ,so they investigated in case of ovarian issues.I had internal and external scans every three months and blood tests for over a year.The cysts didn't grow and the tests were clear.HRT seems to have helped with the bleeding so I'm happy to keep the cysts even thoough the gynae said just phone her and she'll whip them out within the week ...lol

I was referred after a smear test showed some abnormalities on the cervix. Was seen within 2 days by hospital gynaecologist, had the internal scan with cameras, this wasn’t the most pleasant experience, however they couldn’t look further as the cervix so tightly closed, so I had to have colposcopy under general anaesthetic, it would have been too painful without. Fortunately I just had some polyps which were removed and didn’t have to have anything further done. All this under NHS within 3 weeks, I couldn’t fault the staff and doubt if I would have been seen much quicker privately. However, I was told that there were 800 women on the list waiting for non urgent gynaecological surgery at this particular hospital, so I count myself very lucky. Perhaps in your hospital urology/ gynaecology are included under “women’s health”, hopefully you won’t have too long to wait.

I have no personal experience of this, but accompanying DH through the journey of cancer treatment suggests to me that your concerns may be relieved if you either talk to your GP or phone urology direct for more information. Best of luck.

Well I had my appointment with the urologist, very kind consultant, put me at ease straight away. I have a urethral caruncle.
He recommends HRT pessaries (for life!) and a procedure to remove the offending things in 8 weeks time. Apparently they don't come back. The procedure is 'uncomfortable'
He has given me the choice of having them removed, saying the pessaries (essential) will help by 50%.
Has anyone had this problem? Should I start a new thread? Sorry - new to posting on the forum. Thanks

Hi purplenanny I've no experience of a urethral caruncle. For people who do know about it to comment, you should start a new thread with it in the subject line followed by "Advice please".
