Supermarket trolly handles

A GN recommended in a recent thread antiseptic wipes to wipe supermarket trolley or basket handles.
Thankyou to the GN. I bought on line a tub of 100 wipes for 5.99 so 6p per wipe. I keep the tub in my trolley and used the first one this morning and feel that is one step towards not catching bugs this year. Or at least avoiding as much as poss.

I often see Joe Public sneezing into their hand then pushing the trolley. Yuk. The trolleys don't seem to get cleaned at all and the suspermarket dont have paper towels and cleaning gel like they did during and after covid times.

The brand is Clinell but I expect there are other similar ones.

Great idea. I have been doing this since before Covid. I try to avoid touching door handles too, either using a wipe or a tissue.

I do from time to time.
Our supermarket used to provide such facilities. Not sure if it still does.

DH and I worked out several years ago, that we were catching colds after a visit to the garage for fuel.
Always kept hand sanitiser in the car after that.
Cut down our colds from up to 5 a year, to 1.
I dont think I have had a cold all year so far.

I'm obsessed with public cleanliness and hate going out because of it. Even walking on the pavement where disgusting people spit. I often think supermarkets should spray disinfectant on the trolleys each night.

I always use hand sanitiser after shopping and on the bus infact after everywhere I might have touched and I still caught a bad cold. When people sneeze and don't cover their face all the germs are flying about in the air ready for you to breathe in shock

First job on arriving home is washing my hands.

Only time I have ever sanitised shopping trolley handles is when I have had a baby/child in the trolley.

Great idea! What gets me is people handling food (loose vegetables for example) then putting them back. They could have been coughing and sneezing into their hands too. Awful thought!

Also loos. It is amazing the number of people who don't wash their hands.

When it’s colder you can wear gloves

And it amazes me that people use the hand dryers. If you haven’t washed your hands properly, and many don’t, then the nasties just get blown round the room.
I get out as quickly as possible with wet hands and a tissue to open the door!
Neurotic moi!

Good idea

BlueBelle Fri 23-Oct-26 16:12:19

I don’t think it’s a good idea at all, the people who are safer are those who are open to germs and build up a good tolerance

HelterSkelter1 Fri 23-Oct-26 16:38:30

BlueBelle after chemotherapy I am immuno compromised so I dont fancy catching everything Joe Public has on his hands. Or Joe Public's kids either.

Too late. Every single item in that supermarket has already been handled and breathed on by scores of people; growers, pickers, processors, wrappers, delivery drivers , shelf stackers and other shoppers who touched it. Right after they all went to the toilet.

Just give your hands a hot soapy wash when you get home.

Then wear disposable gloves at the supermarket.

That's why I never lick the soles of my shoes.

That’s so funny 🤣

I totally understand if you have severe health problems
helterskelter but you never mentioned anything about your health in your opening post, it read as if you were fine but just fearful of normal life and I do think people without serious health problems do have to build up our own immunity

HelterSkelter1 Fri 23-Oct-26 18:57:20

It wasnt necessary to say my OP I was immuno compromised....like most people I dont want to catch winter bugs. And trolley handles are very dirty as they are never cleaned..except now by me.
Yes I could wear disposable gloves, but prefer the wipes. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hopefully I won't pick up the items that Joe Public has just sneezed on!!!
I will carry on with my wipes. 6p a go is well within budget!

After living with my late husband on chemo for 9 years hand washing every time I come back into the house is second nature.

Me too Helter Skelter1

My chemo was over a decade ago but I have been told I'm still immuno compromised.

So you got the Clinnel! They are also useful for obliterating some printed labels - for those that worry about such things - they will often just lift the print clean off the package. I also use them occasionally to clean the keys on my PC. My late OH used to clean his specs with them also.

I also wash my hands as soon as I come in from shopping. I think it’s a hang over from covid when we also wiped over the packaging with antiseptic wipes, and were even advised to sanitise plastic banknotes and coins! It gave money laundering a whole new meaning!
I also take hand sanitiser into the school where I volunteer, and use it freely.

I wash my hands when I've been out but as for sanitising trolly handles or other things leaves you more open to infection as your immune system works better if you are exposed to some infections.
As another poster said unless you don't pick anything up in a supermarket you will be exposed to infection on the goods.

Ziggy62 Sat 24-Oct-26 13:23:19

From my many years in childcare ive always carried wipes and hand sanitizer.
I cleaned handles of trollies years before covid.
A couple of weeks ago I Saw a guy sneeze into his hands then put his hands straight onto trolley handle 🤮
Ive been known to wipe down table in cafe/coffee shop much to the amusement of my children/grandchildren
I never have flu jab and thankfully have only had flu twice in 65 years, rarely get colds since leaving childcare.

I can’t be bothered with hand dryers - they take too long. I just give my hands a rough wipe on my jeans, or whatever I’ve got on.
