A GN recommended in a recent thread antiseptic wipes to wipe supermarket trolley or basket handles.
Thankyou to the GN. I bought on line a tub of 100 wipes for 5.99 so 6p per wipe. I keep the tub in my trolley and used the first one this morning and feel that is one step towards not catching bugs this year. Or at least avoiding as much as poss.

I often see Joe Public sneezing into their hand then pushing the trolley. Yuk. The trolleys don't seem to get cleaned at all and the suspermarket dont have paper towels and cleaning gel like they did during and after covid times.

The brand is Clinell but I expect there are other similar ones.

My local supermarket still has antibacterial spray and a roll of paper so you can wipe your trolley.
I think it’s a continuation from covid however I’m more concerned by the num bet of parents who put older children in the actual trolley amongst their shopping.
These aren’t babies or toddlers that can sit in the seat these are children old enough to walk sensibly around the shop but think it’s a fun ride in the trolley complete with dirty outdoor shoes all over the trolley and food items.
I find it quite disgusting to be honest so now I give the whole trolley a good spray down before using it.

Why should we or the supermarkets bear the strain/cost? From childhood I was taught to cough or sneeze onto the back of my hand. And yes, forget COVID it’s second nature to wash one’s hands after being out. We need a full blown campaign by schools, medical personnel, television channels, everything and everyone to educate the public and, after enough time, to shame those who ignore the advice. Probably just as well I don’t rule the world, I suppose!

I hate the idea of wipes. Almost all clog up out sewerage systems, dreadful invention.
If I'm concerned about trolley handles (and mostly I'm not) I put a blob of hand sanitizer on my hand and rub it along the handle.
As for worrying about people touching vegetables I think I have more important concerns. Do you not cook most of your vegetables?

Great idea! What gets me is people handling food (loose vegetables for example) then putting them back. They could have been coughing and sneezing into their hands too. Awful thought!

You're supposed to wash your fruit / veg before using...
And they will need to have been harvested - in the case of things like melons & avocados & mangoes (the main things I might handle) they will have been handled in africa & india etc when they are harvested, & I'm sure the pickers aren't any better on average than the average supermarket punter in the UK, at washing their hands regularly.

A few years ago we went to an appointment at our local resource centre, where some GP's ( not ours) as based and other departments, the next day and for a few days after we both came down with Novovirus, it was really bad I am sure it was the buttons in the lift we used as I didn't really touch anything else, I have been wary of lifts ever since.

I dont worry about what I touch, but I do wash my hands or use sanitiser before I eat anything using my hands. I also make sure I walk through the door and wash my hands before touching anything in the house. Cant do much about air borne germs. I was in the theatre this week and the chap behind me kept coughing. I could feel the draught each time and was trying very hard to focus on the play and not the worry of what was wrong with him.

I agree with you 100% as I do the same and im I'm immuned suppressed and don't title myself

My OCD son wears gloves anyway.and uses rubber glove for filling up at petrol stations.(they used to provide them but mostly dont now) so he keeps those& wipes in the car.He had only given up on masks a few months ago,and is now starting again i think. But at least he'll stay well hopefully.

Nannan2 Sat 24-Oct-26 22:28:23

I went Drs other week and she (in further training but newly qualified Dr) coughed on her hand then carried on and was going to do my blood pressure etc and i said she could do with some hand gel & dont they provide her with any?So she went accross to wash her hands at the sink. Lets hope she learned a lesson that stay with her.

This obsession with cleanliness is the reason why we have not built up immunities …

4allweknow Sat 24-Oct-26 23:00:23

Do you wear gloves and a mask when in the supermarket?

Mojack26 Sat 24-Oct-26 23:29:44

I think some of you are TOTP sorry...Each to their own...I do agree however about the number of people that do not wash their hands after going to the toilet! Unbelievable

Lilyflower Sun 25-Oct-26 04:47:30

We have always been hot on handwashing and do so whenever we get in from outside the house. We are very germ conscious in general, especially since Covid. But we also do childcare for two granddaughters who are at different nurseries and they bring home every nasty virus doing the rounds.

For my big milestone birthday the youngest blessed us with Norovirus so we spent it il in bed.

I guess that helps keeps up the immunity but it is unpleasant and I dread germ-soup season.

HelterSkelter1 Sun 25-Oct-26 04:54:21

4allweknow. No I don't do you?

BlueBelle Sun 25-Oct-26 06:03:40

CrazyH exactly what I m trying to say we need to get used to the germs that is the only way to conquer them.

Of course people who have serious illnesses need to be extra vigilant but others need to connect with germs to help them stay healthy.
I wash my hands after the toilet or when I ve been on the allotment or doing other mucky work
I think working in a charity shop I d be at the sink every 5 minutes if I was concerned I m sure I work with hundreds more germs than the supermarket trolley collects in a week.

Absolutely 👍
How is it that the population in poorer less developed countries is growing.
Following the logic here you would imagine that not having access or money to buy rubber gloves and unlimited un contaminated water they would expect the population to drop.
Could it be that tgey have developed a strong immune system.
I accept I could be wrong.

Those of us who have grandchildren who attend school or nursery will regularly be exposed to all sorts of viruses and bacterial infections unless we are paranoid enough to completely isolate ourselves from our families.

CarrotTop Sun 25-Oct-26 15:48:09

I always wipe my hands after putting petrol in my car, and I wash them much more often than I did before Covid made me think hard about it! I wasn't "dirty" before, I've just upped my game a bit! As my ex-FIL was fond of saying, "Do it now, because you're a long time dead!"

cc Sun 25-Oct-26 15:48:56

I must admit to finding the sanitising sprays provided by supermarkets during Covid very reassuring. I always sanitised the trolley handles before use, but was surprised to see that many others didn’t bother. I wish the sprays were still provided. However I suppose that now we have Covid and flu vaccinations freely available the risk is much lower, just colds or tummy bugs.

sharon103 Sun 25-Oct-26 16:50:57

I just wash my hnds when I get home.
Talking of supermarket trolley handles, has anyone ever had a static/electric shock off of the side of the handles? It really nips.

Jaxjacky Sun 25-Oct-26 17:14:20

I rarely shop as I have deliveries, but have never wiped the handle of a trolley or basket. Similarly I’ve never washed fruit and veg, unless muddy from the ground, even through Covid, I do wash my hands regularly though.
The only place I use the provided sanitiser is at the GP’s surgery where there is a touch screen to check in.

hollysteers Sun 25-Oct-26 17:44:50

Witzend you’ve reminded me of the late Queen subtlety rubbing her hand on the side of her dress after shaking a few hands.
She probably would have preferred to carry on wearing white gloves!

Erica23 Sun 25-Oct-26 18:02:23

I never touch my face while out, the number of people I’ve seen licking their fingers. or biting their nails makes me shudder. Hand sanitizer doesn’t work against Norovirus it’s caught by breathing in poo or vomit particles or touching contaminated surfaces.
I always throughly wash my hands and face as soon as I come through the door and again when I’ve put the shopping away.
