Small Things Like These!

I was pondering this, whilst cleaning my teeth this morning, I can't imagine wanting to go back to an ordinary toothbrush after an electric one. What other things would I not want to turn the clock back to:

Instant coffee
Not having these ever so handy small appliances - A heated hairbrush and an electric toothbrush
Not having a banking app, it's ...........just so convenient and possibly a host of other shopping apps
So of course a Smart Phone is necessary, admittedly not always a positive, but pretty necessary in today's world
Not being on the internet
Not having a laptop
Not having a power shower (maybe not so small)

Over to you, what have you got so used to in say the past 20 years or so? I won't say that we can't do without, because we could, but what enhances your day to day life, sometimes in a small way.

Sat Nav on phone and car.
Thermomix
Online shopping
Robot hoover
Wheeled suitcases.
Most definitely online banking

I have had a mobile phone for about 34 years but it was for work, calls were so expensive I would only have used it for 999!

A reversing camera in the car.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Sept-26 09:39:27

For me it would be all of yours (minus heated brush & instant coffee)

I will add my coffee machine, my range cooker & my car, which gives me independence and freedom. (without having to check with DH if he needs the car, going down to one car is non negotiable in this house)

Home delivery of groceries. I find I can't carry much now and the shops are a long way away.

WhatsApp keeps me in touch with friends and family regularly.

Streaming services on the TV.

Edible ready meals.

Washing machine (I didn't have one when my children were young).
Internet shopping.
Internet banking.
Smart phone.
Air fryer
Cordless hedge cutters and strimmer.
My fortnightly gardener to cut my grass on a very steep slope.
Ability to watch TV programmes at a time of my choosing.
Skechers shoes!
My grabber.

Oh yes I agree with most things here!

I’d simply add remote controls, not just for the TV but for lots of things.

I’d “delete” instant coffee! Every morning we grind beans and use a cafetière and a smidgeon of single cream, it’s our treat to get us through the day! Even better, it’s made by DH when he returns from his early morning walk with our dear old cocker.

Thanks for responses everyone, hope there will be more, I'm sure there's stuff I've forgotten. I don't have sat nav or a reversing camera in my car, but then I don't go far these days outside of my local area, but I still want my own car though!!! Other half has all of the latest accoutrements in his, it's only a year old though, mine's now entered it's teens shock and yes I can see what a great addition all those are.

I'll add streaming services because we have several, although sometimes I still can't find anything to watch........too much choice, in a rather contrary way makes it harder. I can remember when we only had BBC and ITV

I think what I was saying in my opening post, I wouldn't want to go back to instant coffee. My coffee pod machine and heated milk frother definitely are a life enhancer. Just something that kick starts my day. I don't think instant has the same effect.

I haven't added big white goods because well, like most, I've had them forever spoiled although possibly not so many when I was growing up.

My friend and husband was staying with us last week and she was extolling the usefulness of an air fryer........ I as yet haven't got one, I'm always late to embracing some newer conveniences, I can see how useful one might be, so I'll consider buying one. Although I've got a microwave and have had one for years, I wonder why sometimes, it's very underused in my house. I think the kids used it more when they lived with us, but I don't really.

My uber app, never used one prior to DH having a stroke but now is essential seeing as we no longer have a car, DH can’t drive and I never did. Also bus passes, again for a similar reason, hardly used them when we had a car but oh boy do we use them now.

Snap, J52, and the beepers to go with it.

Obviously most of the above other than reversing camera.
But one product I love is the Tefal Smart Protect iron.
No settings. It adjusts automatically from Egyptian cotton to silk.

Oooh that’s does sound good, though as I’m a terribly lazy person, I try my best never to iron!

I'm going to add my electric awning (not such a small purchase) but has been a great addition, particularly this year, such a hot summer. The built in sensor gives an automatic retraction if it becomes too windy.

I like the description of your iron petra maybe I'll buy my husband one for Christmas, he loves ironing grin although I do my pile, plus the bed linen so I probably do more and I don't love it.

Samsara1 Mon 21-Sept-26 11:19:58

All the techno things previously mentioned and very importantly my electric golf trolley. Recently bought new IO electric toothbrush much quieter and a Futaria hairdryer - again much quieter and lighter.

My immediate thought was my Robovac. He's been chuntering around downstairs today and everywhere suddenly looks so much cleaner and tidier. Wouldn't it be lovely to have a housework robot!
My next thought was WhatsApp which, as I am very deaf now, keeps me in contact with my family.
I'll go further and say the Internet as a whole - it provides everything you could possibly need.

nanna8 Tue 22-Sept-26 01:49:43

Yes, if you want to know about a biography of a famous person or how to use an air fryer it is now a few seconds away . Same of you want to hear an old song, piece of poetry or just help with a crossword clue !
Microwaves, air fryers, washing machines in the home. Many things.

nanna8 Tue 22-Sept-26 01:50:30

Not instant coffee,though. Nasty.

BlueBelle Tue 22-Sept-26 03:41:07

Terribull I asked for an electric toothbrush for last Christmas
I have gone right back to my old style teeth cleaning just didn’t like it at all
I don’t iron so my rather cheap steamer from Asda has been a great purchase for me Just pop it on for two minutes if something looks a bit creased when I get it out the wardrobe

BlueBelle Tue 22-Sept-26 03:45:55

Terribull I m so opposite to you, couldn’t stand all the faffing of pod coffee and don’t even find any of the tastes great give me a old kenco instant or a drink of Indian chai any day

But now an air fryer I use mine every day and have never touched my oven since the day I bought it 2 years ago

Grammaretto Tue 22-Sept-26 05:05:18

I tried an air fryer - a friend had a spare- but didn't get the point.
It was just another ugly gadget taking up precious counter space .

I have tried bread makers, juicers, food mixers, toastie makers, but given them all away.

Ofcourse there are useful gadgets and the automatic washing machine must be top of the list.

BlueBelle Tue 22-Sept-26 06:42:58

Well my Airfryer does everything for me Grammaretto from my breakfast toast in the morning to cakes scones to dinners etc I no longer have a toaster taking up room on my worktop and haven’t used my grill or oven for over two years since I bought a very cheap Airfryer it’s so easy to look after too 🤣 I do agree about a lot of other gadgets though

BlueBelle Tue 22-Sept-26 06:57:37

They’re useful if you have a Velux window. Ours is so high up it has a remote to operate it.

Dishwasher and magnifying mirror with inbuilt light. I'm lazy and vain!
