Good morning Michael and all GN's from a very dark North Yorkshire morning. Cant even see the outline of the tree yet and so apart from not hearing any rain cant tell what the weather is either.
Am struggling this morning, really hobbling to sit here, my back is so painful plus all the other things and the cellulitis just does not seem the slightest bit better despite my trying to be goody two shoes and putting my leg up on padded stool ect.
Yesterday was rather a frustrating day, having to be taken at snails pace, and very little accomplished in any field. Whilst I did get bits of things done, the world seemed to be conspiring to make life more difficult than necessary. I had wanted to get out early to the market, but it rained quite a lot early on and I couldnt use the car as it was market day, so no chance of parking the car and being able to walk or hobble around. So when it finally stopped raining and looked a bit brighter I was ready with short shopping list, and a reminder to go to the railway station to get advance tickets at a cheaper price and set off on the yellow peril.
The market was busy , which is always good to see, and I gathered quite a few tourist buses were in as many people , unrecognised, wandering aimlessly about, not buying any basics but enjoying the stalls and the shops and quite a queue waiting to go into the hallowed Betty s. Must have been lancastrians , we yorkshire folk prefer other places on the high street with equally or better offerings at a much less price! Still good to see everywhere busy, Not so good for me, attempting to get through the crowds , not watching where they were going and having a tendency to step back from stalls without looking. Much use of my little bicycle bell as a warning!
I was struggling a lot and so wasnt up to getting off my buggy, so doing my "dowager lady grantham" act from downton abbey, I hovered near the bread shop door way, until someone serving noticed me and she knows what loaf I have and brings it out to me, where I graciously give her the correct money and she places it in the backpack on my chair!! Then onward to other stalls, where not such luck and one or two things not available. I then awarded myself a coffee and an apricot croissant at Cafe Neros for effort, and had already got my Yorkshire Post.
I had driven my buggy inside to its usual position, and thought I might have to stay seated on it as everywhere was very busy and quite noisy. That is one problem with no carpets, the noise is not absorbed. Anyway finally someone was moving from a possible seat further down the cafe, so I had to "hurry slowly" to grab the suitable seat, before anyone else leapt in there. I was grateful for a sit down and my kind staff member came round as soon as the queue at the counter had diminished and took my china mug and order, and returned with it all. When I am struggling like this, I am priviledged to not pay until I get up to go. They know that of course I will pay, and in any case the chance of me being able to get out of the door before being apprehended is only something to dream about!
It was still very busy and noisy and I was content to just sit enjoying my treat and with my yorkshire post to hand. I was able to do one of my little things I enjoy , and asked a gentleman on the next table if he followed sport, which he did, and so was able to give him the fresh sporting pages from the Ypost. He was quite delighted to enjoy it with his coffee, and I like to be able to give this away to be enjoyed on the day to someone. I was only interested in the St Leger horses for the day. (I later called at the bookies and lashed out a £1 E/W on Pierre Bonnard, but havent even checked that yet. Last of the big spenders me!)
So , eventually , I rather reluctantly sallied forth, and made my , very bumpy, way to the railway station, to buy some tickets in advance for december. The man there is very helpful and we are quite friends, from my previous campaigning for them to keep a staff available to buy tickets from. As I need assistance these days when I go anywhere by train, the thought of trying to manage with no staff on the station, where previously I once was stood at the correct part of the platform for my carriage, when the train came in backwards so that my carriage was way down the platform and I could not have possibly walked quickly enough to get on in time. I do love the trains for long distance travel, but these days the anxiety is high. In my car I am in charge, decide when and where I go and can stop as I like. But even with booked assistance, I get quite worried and anxious, because I cannot be sure that someone will be there when I need them, that the train will arrive on time etc etc. When I think how I even took my brother to dusseldorf by train when I was only 19, and he was 9 on his first trip abroad, with no worries and certain that I could manage whatever happened , whether it was the language or change of platform. Ah well we shall se
. Just heard the geese flying overhead. As a child in the East Riding ,our house was directly under their flight path and I loved leaning out of my bedroom window watching the V's go past and hearing the rather haunting sound which meant the autumn was here . Well sound is the only thing here today so far, I can can now see the outline of the tree but no sign of wandering pigeons or mad grey squirrel charging up and down the tree.
My great plans to visit somewhere on the Heritage list had to be scratched, as I was just in such a lot of pain that I wasnt able to do any planned thing, but just sit and read the paper and do what various small jobs I could manage. I still had some of the mince left from the previous day and so was glad to just do some potatoes and had that with a glass of red wine, whilst of course watching The Last Night of the Proms, remembering so many other occasions over the years, with friends and family and singing in various things. Looking forward to the special Dolly Parton additions that would be in the second half. Huh!!! Was I mad when I fell asleep and missed that part, but was awake to sing all the usual things at the end, and feel the connection with the prommers and all my family and friends that I knew would be watching too. So today I shall have to find my way round to get it on Iplayer or whatever. So infuriating as of course, I had fallen asleep in the chair, not helping the various pains, giving me a stiff neck and then when I tottered into bed, not being able to sleep for ages!
So todays nonplans are quite simply to plod along, listening to the radio, whilst doing basic jobs, sorting out the weeks tablets into the boxes, and shortly hoping to be up to going into the shower, which I hope will ease pain a bit. Then it will be seeing how I feel and if I can manage to get to a heritage site today. The Bowes Museum is a possibiity. Havent been there for a while, and they may have the Silver Swan working.
Tomorrow I need to go to the surgery, as have received an imperious text telling me to book online for this appointment, yet not informing me exactly what or who this appointment is for. Hopefully it is the referral from the physio to the correct department and hoping I might get some better pain management, but from the text it could be from timbuctoo or be from a Harold Shipman for all I know!!
This is definitely going to be a week of sorting things out, or you may prefer to call it a week for me to be at my stroppiest, and refuse to be fobbed off. I already have on my list for the week, complaining about the hotel that did not have a decent disabled entrance, the council who have passed it as such when it is useless, yet again the wretched state of uneven paving on the pavements around and the potholes, and I havent even got round to thinking about it all yet!! Ah and not to mention having a real go about the wretched ramp at the library where the wretched sticking out metal bars remain untouched. Perhaps I will become an urban robin hood and collect various tools to allow me to approach in the middle of the night and saw off or melt the things down. ah well a nice thought!
You have been doing very well for cycle races recently havent you Mike? Hope you enjoy todays efforts. GrandMattie, I think you should use your high quality needlework to make a few small effigies of Teflon man and annoying residents who do not want to listen to reality. Then you could enjoy sticking a few pins into them to relieve your spirits. Dont think that these days you would get done for witchcraft but other similarly fed up residents may enjoy having a go!! Bellas Nana, remember the cleaning the windows trick next time you have a drought!
Well folks I now can see across the garden, no sign of pigeons, squirrel or little cat so far just still and quiet, so time to get the kettle on and hope that the shower can provide a human WD40 to let me go out, if I find something to go to that I can manage today. Hope you all have a peaceful and happy day. Ah soon it will be time for Harvest Festival s . One of my favourite times of the year, and I was brought up with all the lovely donating fruit and veg in the church. To my granny being honoured by making that lovely sheaf loaf for the centre, being proud of my fathers lovely rhubarb looking glossy and pink against the cabbages etc. These days for practical reasons I know that tins of food are wanted and very useful and of course I donate my share, but for me that giving of your best from your own garden, was that true sign of all things important, Sharing , for any in need, not just those you knew or of the same colour skin. We added no notes to say not for X or Y. The beauty of my grannies eggs with beautiful free range dark brown speckledy sheen, . Then there was the pleasure of our harvest some supper, with all the contributions, of soup made from the vegetables and delicious apple and blackberry pies brought in by everyone to share and enjoy, not forgetting those who were ill, who would have a little basket made up for them so that they didnt miss out. Oh yes in our rural area , harvest home really meant something and the truly spoken prayer of thanksgiving that the harvest was safe and we would have food for the winter meant so much to us all, and still does. I am pleased that many people give their time and effort to help others at this time, perhaps with internet things or mending stuff but that wonderful time honoured view of the church filled with beautiful flowers and food, and looking round at the results of so many peoples hard work cannot be beaten for me. As I lived in the East Riding not far from the coast as a girl, we also always had displays of fishing nets and fish etc too as they were the harvest of the sea. For me, the hymn "Eternal father strong to save" is as much part of the harvest festival as bringing in the sheaves, and when we moved south I really felt there was something missing without that hymn too, Ah well may all those who work so hard to provide food for us all be kept safe and blessed for all their efforts.
Hope you all have a calm and happy day today
