I have moved now, not quite sure where to look for it now! I don’t want to leave it marooned in the house and I certainly don’t want the cat to catch it. Perhaps it was too hot outside for it.

I expect the cat brought it in. Our cat, who rarely goes outside, popped out yesterday while we were gardening. Within two minutes, she scooted in. Yes, she had brought in a mouse. It was playing dead so DH manage to get it and take it outside. If not injured, I think it will die of shock but at least without being ‘played’ with by our cat. She asked to go out again today, but I kept the door firmly shut so she couldn’t bring anymore friends in.

You could try these humane traps. I’ve caught several mice with them. Bait them with cheese, chocolate or peanut butter.

I suspect the cat brought it in. It might not even be a mouse, it could be a shrew. Either way, please get a humane trap if needs be and bait it with peanut butter. It always works for me.

They are really sweet , but there's never just one mouse .
I hate to write it , but you'll have to trap them .

I'd have my husbands air rifle on my lap, be shaking like a leaf, and in a few hours, left to my own devices, parts of my house would probably be looking like pegboard.....if any of you can remember pegboard.

You really need to set a trap. You don’t want mice in your house, honestly, you don’t. The damage they can do is alarming - eating through electric cables, soft furnishings, etc. Not only that, but their droppings and urine are unhygienic, their smell is horrible and they multiply rapidly. Sorry, but there's no room for sentiment once mice enter your home. You need to get rid.

There can be one ! I had one a month or so back I totally accidently killed it and felt awful I wrote about it on here but since it’s been gone there has never been any sight or sound of another one I do believe they can accidently get in the house on their own

Bluebell, I don’t think there’s ’accidentally’ about it! They’re in survival mode, looking for cover and easy food. Spiders and mice are my ‘plain nasty’. They smell like nothing on earth! And they invite their relations and definitely leave their descendants if the welcome mat is left out.

Humane traps are actually not very humane, from what I've read.

If you put the mouse out of its area to let it go, its likely to be killed or die.

If you let it go near to your house... well, in it comes again.

Denbylover I m not great at killing anything and yes it was accidently I pushed the door hard to keep the mouse out and I killed it completely unintentionally. I would have preferred to let it go and get on with its life out of my domain and yes taken a chance with it coming back
It’s got as much right to life as me I do like mice just don’t want to live with them in my house

A little anecdote from many years ago.

My DH had gone to visit a client in Knightsbridge whose house had the kitchen in the basement - with an area and steps to the pavement level. She saw a rat and chased it up the stairs and along the street, apparently yelling her head off. Suddenly the rat stopped running, turned around and chased her back into the house , through the open front door.

Mice make me shriek because the move so quickly but rats are loathsome.

What the OP needs is either a cat or a terrier as a pet.

Just read her next post. I suspect that either the cat brought the mouse in as a present for her or to play with
