Gentle Sleep

I don’t understand this thread Caleo

Lovely words, and so true.

Lovely thing to find like that Caleo

Lovely. What a nice thing to carve or was it painted?

Beautiful words from William Shakespeare .
Henry IV part two .

I had a beautiful Arts and Crafts wardrobe with "Sleep, it is a gentle thing " on the pediment. It nearly broke my heart having to sell it, when I downsized.

I'm afraid my nights are more, "Macbeth hath murdered sleep."

We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.

I was taken to this little hotel when I was a child and where I was given a single room to myself. This wardrobe was opposite my bed and as it was summer and the evenings were light I could read the fretwork words on the pediment. I had never seen a wardrobe like that before, and the phrase was new to me so I read it over and over again before I fell asleep, and have never forgotten.

Lovely, although I had to look up 'pediment'!

Me too Claretjan!

What a lovely memory Caleo. I love when these things come back out of nowhere.

Balm of hurt minds...
(Macbeth)

Wonderful words. Just hearing them makes me feel soothed. Thank you for sharing.

He delightful

Thank you - how beautifully soothing to read.

Lovely. I could do with gentle Nurse Sleep many a sleepless night.

Claretjan, I too had to look up ''pediment '. After I posted to Gransnet I checked with my son who used to deal in antique funiture and he said 'cornice' was better. He also said such wardrobes are often Arts ans Crafts.

Chaitriona, I too have used the remembered image and that is why I thought to post the story here so as to maybe be of use to somebody ese.

How very kind.

“O sleep, O gentle sleep, Nature's soft nurse, how have I frightened thee. That thou no more will weigh my eyelids down, And steep my senses in forgetfulness?”

Pictures of my beautiful wardrobe.

The words are so soothing. I’ve never heard them before today.

Makes me feel better knowing there may have been sleep issues since mankind and not reserved just for me.
