My five year old GD has developed a fearing of doing a poo and she holds it for maybe five days. This means she ends up in pain and discomfort. My son (her dad) then spends maybe an hour with her sitting on the loo, talking to her, playing her videos, coaxing and coaxing until eventually an absolute river of poo comes out. Then it all starts again for another four or five days.
This started about three months ago when she was slightly constipated and of course the poo hurt when she went. She agrees that after a poo she feels much better - and in fact when its done she's back to her normal bubbly self - but trying to persuade her to go every day or every other day just isn't working.
We give her lactulose to keep the poo soft, but really we're at our wits' end. I thought after a few weeks this phase would end but there's no sign of it stopping. She has seen the GP who says there's nothing physically wrong and just to make sure she has lots of fruit and veg. We've done that, but it's her fear and stubbornness that is really the problem.
Has anybody else had this happen? And how did you bring an end to it?

Ah dear - why does getting older equate to diminished brain power?
