Him. It doesn't help put the screen cover on.
Me. Cant get it tight.

Me. I have run out of de-icer.
Him. Dont use de-icer it will ruin the paintwork, scrape it.
Me. Cant do that it makes my arthritic hands bad, going to buy more de-icer.
Him. Sigh. I'll do it for you.
Me. What about when I am out on my own.
Him. No answer.

Me. Couldn't find my de-icer I always leave it behind the drivers seat.
Him. Its in the boot.
Me. Why
Him. Its where it lives.

Is it me?

The conversation in my house:

him...it's going to be frosty tonight.

me.... So what? My car had got a quick-thaw button thing on it for both windscreens. That's why I've got a Ford. (His is a Mercedes and he has to scrape the windscreen)

Our house today
Him. Where are the car keys?
Me. You put it away, so where did you leave them?
Him. Well, they’re not in the pot
Me. Are they in your pocket?
Him. Ah, yes, thanks

Hatpev Sat 03-Nov-18 21:07:47

Him: I can’t find the keys
Me: have you tried all your pockets?
Him: I only ever put them in the right pocket
Me: try your left pocket
Him: ................

Frosty moments! You could fill a whole thread with this sort of domestic exchange. ???

He: try pouring a kettle of water over it
She: laptop completely bu**ered now.

Esspee Sun 04-Nov-18 07:40:49

You made me laugh out loud Maw. Thanks for that.

Comforting - or maybe depressing? - to know they are all from the same mould

As a widow my conversation is one-sided. Will it be frosty? Is it cold enough? Can I see the stars? Shall I put the blanket on (trapping the sides in the windows)? If I do, will it rain instead? Will I be annoyed? Does it matter?
I much prefer to take action instead of not bothering. If it rains I can always hang the blanket over the bath to dry. A bit inconvenient but not as annoying as scraping. I hate scraping with a passion.

If you have a garage, then put the car in that, if not use a car cover, easy peasy. I am one of those awful women who garage the car every single night because my insurance policy states that it's kept in the garage overnight.

Frost forecast - DH gets up early to scrape his windscreen before he goes to work.
I stay in bed longer until mine has thawed.
I LOVE being retired!!

grandtanteJE65 Sun 04-Nov-18 14:02:15

In my childhood my parents covered the windscreen with newspaper, which can be thrown away if it gets wet.

As far as I remember it worked well. A rug or old sacks went over the bonnet to make the car easier to start

HootyMcOwlface Sun 04-Nov-18 14:37:45

What do you do with your car cover though? I have one (small size- just covers the windows) but when I took it off I shoved it in the boot, not giving all the frost on it a thought. Yes, it thawed and I had a very wet boot! So what do I do with it when I take it off - advice please!

To Hatpev & Auntiflo, beat this....
Many years ago I went on a weeks OU summer school. My ex moved his car first thing to let me out.
When I returned, he came storming out of the house shouting "what have you done with my keys? I have had to use <son's> car for a week!"
I had a quick think and remembered he had been in his dressing gown when he moved the car. That's where the keys were.
But it was still my fault somehow.

I leave my damp windscreen cover on the covered but open prch and then it goes in the boot later..or straight back on the window if I am out all day!

Fennel Sun 04-Nov-18 16:09:12

What I used to do when living in open country was to park the car facing the morning sun in the east. By the time I went out it had thawed out.
Otherwise hot water.

Buy a ford car with a heated windscreen - never need to scrape again!
