Holiday recommendations needed.

I went on holiday alone to Cyprus earlier this year and really enjoyed visiting the island - I also hope to go to Malta next year. However, as you won't be doing any walking then I suppose that what you really need is simply a good hotel with all the facilities that you need and for that I would say a good travel agent is possibly your best bet.

Malta is one of the places people either love or hate. I didn't like it at all! Everything was concrete, and it is very dry there.

I LOVE Croatia, and have been 6 times....it's a large country, and the places I've visited were all clean, friendly and pretty (lots of greenery and flowers). My favourite is POREC, where there's a harbour, market, very pretty and very large park, with a little tourist train. The people are lovely, all speak English. Pula and Dubrovnik are more for tourists, and both get busy. Hvar and Trogir are very nice.

Corfu is lovely, and so is Paphos in Cyprus.

I didn't like Crete (too many English bars, a lot of Sky sports and Bingo. Rhodes was nice, but as a cat lover, I was upset to see hundreds of cats everywhere (the Greek treat them as wild animals, so they are poisoned at the end of the season)

How about Jersey? It's clean, pleasant, and the flight is really short.

Haven't been to Malta, although it is on my to-do list and I'm told it has a lot of historic sights. Cyprus has some lovely hotels many of which are close to the beach and have access to a long seaside promenade. But as with everything you get what you pay for and the good ones are quite expensive. How bad is your mobility? There are a number of sites now which recommend hotels for the disabled. Try Googling 'disabled holidays' if you are interested.

My DH knows someone who takes a wheelchair to Lanzarote every year as it's fairly flat. We have never been to the Canary Islands, but I know people who love it there. We like southern Italy. Sorrento is fab, but it is hilly.

My son and DiL have just come back from Croatia. They can't speak highly enough of it, and they are a much travelled couple.

The idea of talking to a travel agent is good, two nearby to me shut in the last year, and also I will look into the disabled holidays.

trisher I don't walk anywhere outdoors and am a wheelchair user. I have MS which limits most activities. I am quite adventerous within the confines of the chair and use trains, buses etc on my own, particularly when I was without a car. So i am happy to go out and about within reason.

I am looking to mostly stay within the areas adjacent of the hotel or complex but want to have a beach "on the doorstep" so that with help I can relax by a warm sea. I've never seen a warm clear blue sea.

I wasn't keen on Malta either, or Madeira - just personal choice of course. I agree that Corfu is lovely and so are some of the smaller Greek Islands. We have visited Santorini which is beautiful but the airport coming back is a nightmare and I don't think it would be suitable for wheelchair users. In fact it was chaos! We also liked Thassos. Years ago we had many lovely holidays in many parts of France.

Cala Galdana in Menorca beautiful horseshoe bay with crystal waters.It is a small rescort with a few restaurants and bars and flat as well .One of the hotels is only a few steps from the beach Have a lovely holiday .

The hotel is called the Melia Cala Galdana

March in the Med could still be a bit cool and you say you want hot gmelon

If you can wait until May then there are some good recommendations in above posts.
Croatia is lovely but many of the beaches are pebbly - perhaps that is why the sea is so clear.

We like Malta for family reasons, but I don't think it would fit your criteria unless you are looking for history and beautiful churches.

Would you consider a cruise? Absolutely no problem with wheelchairs. You won’t be the only one!

I loved the Caribbean, especially the windward isles. A cabin with a balcony will give you all the blue sea you could want.

Plenty of staff to help with disembarking and lovely places to visit. A different one every day.

P&O go direct from Southampton or you can fly to Barbados bad pick up the ship there.

I have very happy memories of doing this when my husband was in a wheelchair.

Personally I would post again on the MS website - you may get more specific replies. My DH also has MS and for the past few years we have been cruising although not everyone's cup of tea it has suited us as once you are on board it is an easy way to travel. However his issues now prevent us from doing this so I would suggest that you go for it!

I agree about March in the Med. Cyprus will be warmer but the Canary Islands are the best for winter sun. If you are looking for a hotel in Cyprus look at those owned by the Constantinou Bros. I took my mum in a wheelchair several years ago and she had a great time. Unfortunately hotels do change so I couldn't say for certain they are still good. It was called the Athena Beach in Paphos.

Just back from Malta and if walking is a problem it’s possibly not for you. The historic sites have lots of steps. Not much in the way of sandy accessible beaches.
Cyprus around Protaras or Paphos may suit for beaches.
I concur with the advice of speaking to your local travel agent.

gmelon - after a quick bit of research it seems that Tenerife is very well suited to wheelchair users as it is very flat with wide walkways and lots of hotels and taxi's etc. are adapted. I would do all the research you can and then take yourself off to a travel agent to help out with bookings etc. Some airports and travel firms are better than others when dealing with passengers who have disabilities and a good agent will advise and then help you to navigate any extra assistance as needed.

We loved Croatia - but have only stayed just outside of Dubrovnik. Croatia is very beautiful and very clean. There are several reasonably priced, short, boat trips. My neighbours usually go to Split in Croatia and speak very highly of it too.

I love Menorca. I'm not quite sure why it's one of my favourites as it's not outstandingly beautiful. But the towns and villages are sweet and lots of little white houses. It is just very relaxing and fairly uncrowded. We have stayed several times in Santo Thomas and once in Cala Blanca - Santo Thomas is my preference. Cala Galdana is also lovely.

We have recently been to Madeira and weren't very keen on it. Funchal, where we stayed, was rather nice but we weren't that impressed with anywhere else - and most days were wholly or partially cloudy.

It is essential to take out travel insurance before booking or as soon as poss afterwards. Don't leave it till nearer the time as you might have to cancel at any time and you can't always get your money back.

Eleothan I loved Madeira. Great scenery and lovely people. Did you go to any of the more undeveloped resorts? I love Funchal but some of the smaller places are so attractive as well.

trisher We went on a coach trip of the west of the island and down through the centre of the island. There was a rather attractive place - I can't remember the name - where there were paths winding through large dark rocks. But we weren't that impressed with anything else we saw. The Monte Palace Garden in Funchal was rather beautiful though.

I think half the problem was that the weather wasn't great - only between 16-18, whereas here it was 27. Very disappointing. Having looked at the weather forecast there several times since we got back, we notice that quite a few days are showing as cloudy or partially cloudy.

I agree with you about the people - they were very nice. The staff in the hotel were so friendly and helpful. In fact it was the hotel, the entertainment and the good food which were the highlight - which is unusual for us as those things are usually of secondary importance to us because we like to get out and about.
