In the name of being equal a Police Male voice choir in Derbyshire have been told to change their name to include women This choir has been singing for charity for years and years Why on earth should they change I m all fo equality but this is ridiculous
Male voice choirs sound lovely and are quite different to mixed choirs Howabout the servicemen wives choir how come that’s ok

Once again stupidity rules BlueBelle It does seem there are different rules applied to suit the occasion,
There is an outcry when women are treated as sex objects in the course of their job but its a joke when males are groped.
I love the sound of a male voice choir as well.

OldMeg Thu 05-Apr-18 08:52:13

That’s just plain stupid!

luluaugust Thu 05-Apr-18 09:00:10

Ridiculous and very sad.

Anniebach Thu 05-Apr-18 09:01:05

Good grief, this surely must have happened because some batty women complained ?

Hands off male voice choirs

Greyduster Thu 05-Apr-18 09:10:52

Male voice choirs are a simply wonderful tradition and the PC (excuse the pun) brigade should be told to sling their hook! Where does it all stop? It was the beginning of the end for me when they started bringing girls into cathedral choirs to sing alongside the boys. I know there are reasons for this, as it is now difficult to recruit boy choristers to all but the prestigious choirs, and their voices are breaking earlier.

MawBroon Thu 05-Apr-18 09:13:44

Yet again a complete common sense bypass.
It would be funny if it were not all around us and so sad.
Do barbershop quartets have to be qualified hairdressers?

henetha Thu 05-Apr-18 09:13:46

I agree. It's pathetic. Long live male voice choirs!

Oldwoman70 Thu 05-Apr-18 09:24:33

I doubt any women complained, my guess it was some manager sitting at their computer decided the fact it was a male choir could offend someone. I don't see how this ruling advances the cause of equal treatment.

Mapleleaf Thu 05-Apr-18 09:27:34

When were they told to do this, April 1st ?.
Seriously, it’s a nonsense. Some jobsworth with nothing better to do!

SussexGirl60 Thu 05-Apr-18 09:28:46

No common sense, as someone else has posted. I’m afraid I may be getting old and grumpy but I don’t see much common sense anywhere these days. (Better now that’s off my chest?).

Theoddbird Thu 05-Apr-18 09:28:54

It would change the whole sound of the choir...a wonderful sound. This is ridiculous....

merlotgran Thu 05-Apr-18 09:31:17

Are the Dagenham Girl Pipers still going?

RobtheFox Thu 05-Apr-18 09:31:29

If the Derbyshire Police Authority is so concerned the obvious answer is to organise both a female choir and also a mixed choir in addition to this long standing male voice one ...PC Plod has gone PC mad!

Theoddbird Thu 05-Apr-18 09:34:06

I have just read the actual report. They are staying a male voice choir just changing the name to 'The Derbyshire Community Male Voice Choir' to cut their ties to the police force which has a gender equality policy.

Nonnie Thu 05-Apr-18 09:42:39

On any questions this week Lionel Shriver referred to something being only one step up from being a white, heterosexual male, meaning that they are the lowest in any pecking order. She may well be right. So many grant applications in the public sector make it quite clear that such men haven't a hope so may as well not apply.

Mapleleaf Thu 05-Apr-18 09:44:05

Oh, dear, Ludicrous that they’ve had to do that, Theoddbird. PC gone mad!

Teetime Thu 05-Apr-18 09:47:20

I read this with sadness. The sound a good male voice choir makes is entirely unique and the repertoire is specific to that sound. No-one complains about the military wives.

annodomini Thu 05-Apr-18 09:54:32

Trying to imagine the Red Army Choir with women...No! cant see it.

MawBroon Thu 05-Apr-18 10:03:34

Not unless they had very deep voices grin

Agus Thu 05-Apr-18 10:05:43

Surely this would require the male choir to change their repertoire to accommodate female voices.

Before we know it some female will be demanding the lead in Othello!

The thing about common sense is, it’s not all that common unfortunately.

grannyscott Thu 05-Apr-18 10:11:44

This woman power thing is getting out of control. I fully support women having equality but fail to understand what they believe they are achieving doing a Full Monty on TV, and now planning to run a Marathon in their underwear. Pictures of scantily clad women are demeaning and turns their efforts into something sexualised so why do they do it?

maddyone Thu 05-Apr-18 10:16:56

It’s very sad. Sometimes you just wonder about the level of intelligence in certain people, it’s obvious that there are/can be exceptions in equal opportunities legislation. Female teachers can be employed to teach girls PE etc so I don’t understand why it was thought necessary to do this with the choir. PC gone mad in my opinion.

Sheilasue Thu 05-Apr-18 10:19:48

Because they believe in what they are doing.
My d is a diversity and inclusion manager for a well known rail service. She deals with woman in work places and you would be shocked at what she deals with.
Sexual harassment, bullying, less money then a male.
I brought my d up to be a strong independent woman and
Not have to go through what I and others did in the 60’s

Jalima1108 Thu 05-Apr-18 10:46:58

It is silly because the title of the choir refers not to males but to male voices.
