TV news readers' pronunciations

Ooh railman, I too am irritated by train station, it was a railway station all the time that I was growing up. We were asked whether we wanted to leave or remain in the EU on the ballot paper, so where did "Brexit" come from? There was no mention of exit before the vote to leave.

I feel they use 'less than' when they mean 'fewer than' and 'BBC is ...'. And why do so many people speak so quickly it is hard to follow them.?

Train station really annoys me. All my childhood we referred to it as The Station. If we meant a bus or coach station then that was what we would call it. Another one is Horse Riding, or even worse, Horseback Riding (what other bit of it would you ride on?) If we rode horses we went Riding, if we rode bicycles we went Cycling. End of - to use another irritating phrase.

"BBC is" is correct. There is only one BBC.

Train station sounds ok to me when I was a kid it was railway station but language changes and evolves we have to move with the times. I think of it as a train station now
It's the same for a radio you'd never use the word wireless now would you but that's what we grew up with saying

As the thread title refers to pronunciation rather than the twisted way with words presenters often use it reminded me of Moira Stuart. She was/is (but on CE show so never hear her) a wonderful news reader. You could hear every word she said and she seemed to take great care in pronouncing the most unfamiliar names or words. Bring back Moira to the evening BBC1 news I say!

Like it BlueBelle - I guess that's why the US still uses the word "gotten".

I clearly have a lot to learn about neologisms (whatever they are) and the other stuff, but sometimes it just doesn't sound right to my ear.

What's the "bagging area"?

I don't know what is wrong with 'Train station', after all, we have 'Bus station'.
It is a place where trains stop so that passengers can get on or off (stationary?).
The railway itself doesn't stop or become stationary, the trains travel along it

Huh. I had that "Unexpected item in the bagging area" message the other day, every time I put my bag on the little platform. Eventually I said firmly to the machine,"It's not unexpected, it's a BAG!" and got a funny look from the man at the next till. In the end I put my bag on the floor and loaded up only when the transaction was complete and the machine wasn't looking. I think I got away with it.

It amuses me that I have to put the newspaper on that silly platform when that's all I am buying. I usually forget and wonder why nothing happens.
