Ana - there's a option not to bag? Where?!

Grannyticktock- I usually answer back to the self check voice! Either I've got a bag so light empty that it doesn't register, a bag with shopping already in, or my trolley. The bossy machine isn't happy with any of those. The local Tesco staff are quite used to my answering the machine. The woman helping people to self check in Sainsbury's told me she's quite used to customers talking to the machine. It usually goes smoothly in M&S!

I still prefer railway station and always will!

The phrase that really makes me mad is 'this bus will terminate here'. Surely it's the journey not the bus that is going to 'terminate'?

Getting back to the OP - there is a difference between 'fewer than' and 'less than', presenters should know the difference..

The assistant had to come and help before I dumped everything and left.

The bagging area thinks maybe you were trying to sneak something past without scanning it. The poor thing is a bit simple really, it doesn't know that it is a bag. It feels the weight of everything put down on it, and if it thinks you have bagged something illegally it flags it up. Even moving things about in the bag to pack them better raises its suspicions. It doesn't like you leaning on it either.

It amuses me that I have to put the newspaper on that silly platform when that's all I am buying. I usually forget and wonder why nothing happens.

Huh. I had that "Unexpected item in the bagging area" message the other day, every time I put my bag on the little platform. Eventually I said firmly to the machine,"It's not unexpected, it's a BAG!" and got a funny look from the man at the next till. In the end I put my bag on the floor and loaded up only when the transaction was complete and the machine wasn't looking. I think I got away with it.

when you have 12 items in your basket and you go to the "Fewer than 10 ..." does it really matter.
but I would never do that!!
I would count to make sure that I had no more than 9.

I don't know what is wrong with 'Train station', after all, we have 'Bus station'.
It is a place where trains stop so that passengers can get on or off (stationary?).
The railway itself doesn't stop or become stationary, the trains travel along it
