TV news readers' pronunciations

Is it me I wonder?

Recently, I find myself getting increasingly vexed by the news reader (Breakfast, Lunchtime, and Evening) preference for the phrase "5 time winner", or "Train station" (Yes I know my nom de guerre is a giveaway!).

The "x time" phrase is by far the most irritating - as it is meaningless - do they forget, or simply don't know the difference between plural and singular!!

Why not say "5 times winner" if you must - at least it reflect the plurality of the statement.

Lastly, why oh why do we insist on "exiting the EU' instead of simply "leaving", and the insistence on using "fewer than...." when "less than ...." conveys the same message for us mere mortals.

I know this should perhaps be aimed at 'Pedant's Corner' but there's been so much of this stuff on the telly lately - BBC are particularly prone at the moment!!

The bagging area thinks maybe you were trying to sneak something past without scanning it. The poor thing is a bit simple really, it doesn't know that it is a bag. It feels the weight of everything put down on it, and if it thinks you have bagged something illegally it flags it up. Even moving things about in the bag to pack them better raises its suspicions. It doesn't like you leaning on it either.

I have an issue (sometimes) with the pronunciation of Nuclear.

Why do some presenters - Richard Osman for example, insist on saying, Newkular?

Ana Thu 03-Aug-17 14:25:59

But you can always click the 'I don't want to bag this' option!

"They also serve who only stand and wait."

I hate self-serve anyway. People need jobs.

Ana Thu 03-Aug-17 15:40:01

Well, there's always someone rushng up to help those customers who are helplessly trying to stop the machine shouting at them! grin

durhamjen Thu 03-Aug-17 15:45:45

I agree with you, merlot. Makes me cringe. Particularly when it's someone who makes a living out of use of words.

Ana Thu 03-Aug-17 15:52:45

Well why don't Richard Osman's bosses tell him he's wrong? Why doesn't anyone? Very odd...

durhamjen Thu 03-Aug-17 16:15:43

They probably have. My mother said the word artitect all her life no matter how many times we told her it was architect.

Getting back to the bagging area - I dared to take my good (in the bags) off the bagging area and put them into the trolley before I paid. The machine told me off.
The assistant had to come and help before I dumped everything and left.

Good to know I'm not the only idiot in the bagging area.
I explain I'm only doing it to keep them in jobs.

devongirl Thu 03-Aug-17 19:27:46

Getting back to the OP - there is a difference between 'fewer than' and 'less than', presenters should know the difference..

Jalima1108 Thu 03-Aug-17 19:50:30

Idiot In The Bagging Area has a certain ring to it.

Sounds like the title of a new sit-com

The phrase that really makes me mad is 'this bus will terminate here'. Surely it's the journey not the bus that is going to 'terminate'?

Ana - there's a option not to bag? Where?!

Grannyticktock- I usually answer back to the self check voice! Either I've got a bag so light empty that it doesn't register, a bag with shopping already in, or my trolley. The bossy machine isn't happy with any of those. The local Tesco staff are quite used to my answering the machine. The woman helping people to self check in Sainsbury's told me she's quite used to customers talking to the machine. It usually goes smoothly in M&S!

I still prefer railway station and always will!
