Is this being unkind or selfish

Four of us are going on a short break next week. On Monday we are getting the train returning on Friday. Tonight we had a meeting to discuss arrangements. I was greeted by one of the women saying, ' my husband can take three of us to the station but not you, (me) there isn't room in the car for four, you will have to get the bus'. Her husband has a new Range Rover, that seats three in the back. My husband is disabled and cannot drive anymore. I felt a bit uncomfortable and slightly upset. Please tell me, should I be feeling hurt and also feel she is being selfish. Or should I just except that not everyone is very thoughtful. Or am I being childish.

I wouldn't be bothered at making my own way but I'd also feel a bit peeved at the woman for leaving one person out of the arrangements, how petty. Would be better if everyone made their own way than leave one person out in my opinion.
You're not being childish and yes she is being thoughtless and a bit selfish. I wonder how she'd feel if the tables were turned? Also wonder what the other two ladies felt at you being left out of the 'lift'?

She sounds a bit mean to me - what an awful thing to say to you. The car should easily seat 4 passengers. I hope she is not going to be unpleasant to you during your break. You are certainly not being childish.

Do you really want to go on a break with such a mean minded person as she is? Rude, thoughtless and downright selfish in my opinion.

Nannarose Tue 04-Jul-17 21:59:25

From the way you have written this, it seems that she decided you should be the one to get the bus. I would be asking myself 'why that assumption?'. It may be obvious: you are on the best route, for instance.
I have a car that theoretically seats 3 in the back, but it would be a struggle with 4 lots of luggage as well!
So a lot depends on other circumstances and if she's usually the one who bosses everyone about!
Did the others seem fine, or did they look uncomfortable?

Whatever, I hope you can enjoy the trip.

merlotgran Tue 04-Jul-17 22:02:04

Of course there's room in a Range Rover for four passengers. I'd be hopping mad!

Greenfinch Tue 04-Jul-17 22:04:52

How tactless. She is being extremely unkind and I would feel exactly as you do.In fact the other two should have risen to your defence. It would make me .want to drop out of the whole thing though I suppose you have got to try and be the better person

Luckygirl Tue 04-Jul-17 22:13:07

How did she come to decide that you would be the one to travel by public transport?

nanaK54 Tue 04-Jul-17 22:14:57

Oh how mean of her

AlgeswifeVal Tue 04-Jul-17 22:52:25

She also had the nerve to ask me to drive her home after our meet up tonight. Which I did , of course. I can't drive myself to railway station on Monday as cannot leave the car anywhere for 5 days. I have come home thinking I don't want to go now but of course I will, however I will never forget. I think she knows I was a bit miffed as I felt I had gone rather quiet. Still, I will rise above it. I think she decided to make me use public transport as they all live in close proximity. I am only a couple of minutes away. Thanks everyone for your feedback.

It is her selfishness and thoughtlessness that is the problem. Rise above it and pretend it is no problem whatsoever. If she is rude in any other way speak firmly but politely to her. Resist the temptation to discuss it with the other two if you can. Hope you enjoy the holiday.

Christinefrance Wed 05-Jul-17 08:23:06

I agree with mumofmadboys, don't let this person 's thoughtlessness spoil the holiday. If there are any further issues you don't need to go on holiday with her again. Enjoy.

Not a nice situation to be in when going away with this woman.
Did none of the others have anything to say about it? Perhaps they have someone who could drive them to the station and they could swap with you.
I had a little C1 at one point and got 3 in the back for a short trip, there will be seat belts for 3 in the back and for a 4 day trip there won't be masses of luggage.
Why didn't you say something when she announced that you weren't getting a lift?
I would rather go away by myself than go with others who don't seem to have any sympathy with your predicament .
At least before you go speak to the others about it and tell them how you feel, also ask the wife of the range rover why you were chosen.
Good luck, and remember life is too short to spend it with selfish people.

Rise above it this time and if it happens again then tackle it head on because if it is bullying then she will soon stop as bullies cannot do what they enjoy doing with a strong person , they thrive on weaker or gentler natured characters.
Make your own way as she suggested and let her know that you are not fazed by her actions in any way.
It could be that she has done it because of the luggage taking up space or she's just not thought it through properly so don't go in all guns blazing until you really know.
Have a lovely few days with your friends

Barmyoldbat Wed 05-Jul-17 13:37:27

Raise above it, but think hard about the future of your friendship with her.

glammanana Wed 05-Jul-17 13:47:51

What an absolute meany she is, my DS1 drives a RR and he can seat 3 in the back comfortably and enough luggage space for 4 plus a baby pram and the kitchen sink,I would never give this person a lift anywhere ever again.Enjoy your break and rise above her flowers

gillybob Wed 05-Jul-17 14:04:41

She's a rotten cow ! There I said it !

How nasty . Mind you I think if one of the other "friends" don't suggest getting public transport with you , then they are no better .

phoenix Wed 05-Jul-17 14:16:49

I take it that the four people going are you and your DH, plus her and her DH?

Olene Wed 05-Jul-17 14:20:27

How mean!
If you only live 2 minutes away why can't the others be dropped off a few minutes early and then come back for you?
She sounds nasty and her DH sounds unchivalous. My DH would never leave one of my friends out, nor would I.
And a RR has loads of room.

Ana Wed 05-Jul-17 14:21:01

No, no husbands phoenix. The OP's DH is disabled therefore can't drive her to the station, and the other woman's DH is driving the other three women to the station.

Baggs Wed 05-Jul-17 14:31:07

If you are only two minutes away, could you walk to the station? Or get a taxi?

She sounds like a very wierd person to me if she was as blunt and unreasonable about the lift arrangements as you say. I agree with the suggestion that you rise above this silliness and perhaps think twice about doing anything with this person again. It's the kind of behaviour that knocks the feet from under you, so to speak.

Alima Wed 05-Jul-17 14:49:38

She does sound a mean-minded petty old trout AwV. I hope you enjoy your break away and make sure you are first in line when they give out the room keys. (Don't do what I would do and try and get your own back. Things tend to fester then).

petra Wed 05-Jul-17 14:59:40

Ive had 2 Range Rovers so I'm a bit confused over this 'room' situation.
The other woman's husband is driving the ladies to the station?
There is room for 4 other people in the car?
Am I missing something?
All I can assume, is, 2 of the ladies are taking up the room of 3?

Oriel Wed 05-Jul-17 15:07:09

Of course a Range Rover can take four people. That being the case it would seem that she's being unreasonable not including you in and she's being downright rude to tell you to take the bus. I would book a taxi to the station and to meet you on your return.

libra10 Wed 05-Jul-17 15:42:06

I know what my answer would be the next time she asks you for a lift AlgeswifeVal.

And it wouldn't be positive!
