What would you have done???

This morning while out with my dil we were driving along a main road which was quite busy and in front of us was a car which was clearly being driven by someone who is not in control of the car. We hung back a little but were still right behind with no vehicles between us and we saw the car going right over to the other side of the road and very nearly collided with a bus and a truck and then it did hit a car and did not stop. My dil rang the police while we followed the car , again it almost collided with a couple more vehicles before turning into the driveway of a house. The police asked us to wait outside the house and said a car was on its way. After about half hour the police turned up and asked us what we saw and who was driving ,we gave him the information and said we caught it after the collision on video then he went to the house ,again asking us to wait .We waited and waited for almost an hour and then an ambulance with flashing lights turned up and went into the same house. About 15 minutes later the policeman came out and told us it was a little old lady who is ill and not herself and that she was completely unaware of her bad driving or of the collision.
I'm not sure how this has made me feel ,should we have done exactly what we did or ignored it all, kept out of it and let her keep on driving.
I keep telling myself we did the right thing as she was so tiny she could not see where she was going over the bonnet , it looked as if there was no-one in the car. We can't believe her son who was in the house, let her drive the huge car. We feel sad and bad knowing that she may now have her independence taken away but , at the same time we are happier knowing that we may have removed at least one hazard from the roads.
Have we done the right thing in getting police involved as initially we thought it was a drunk driver.

Of course you have done the right thing - in fact you have done far more than many would and it took up a fair bit of your time. You'll never know, but there's a good chance your civic minded behaviour may eventually save some lives or injuries. Well done

Why are you even questioning it of course it was the right thing to do We all have to lose our independence if we are unable to do what we are trying to do safely

What price her independence to her or worse still others fatality

I would have done the same thing, for her safety and the safety of other road users.

You did the right thing. If the driver was incapacitated by drink or drugs they needed to be arrested and if the driver was ill they needed to be checked over.

nanab of course it was the right thing to do. It may be that after some treatment the woman will be allowed to drive, but maybe in a smaller car! If it's the end of driving for her then it is how it must be. It's something none of us want to contemplate, but better than being a danger to others. She does sound very unwell. It's worth thinking that without you she may not have received the treatment she needs. flowers for you both for waiting so long and doing the right thing.

I would have done the same. You may have saved her life and the lives of others

Yes, you have done the right thing, she should never have been driving. She will probably have to hand in her licence but that is better than injuring or killing someone.

Perhaps her son will be a bit more caring in the future and take her out in the car himself.

You definitely did the correct thing. We all have to give up driving sometime, I only hope that is not the way that I am made to stop driving.

As I read and before coming to the end of your story I had guessed that the person driving the car was most probably unwell

If I did decide to get involved I probably would have tried to confirm my thoughts that the person was unwell

Once I had ascertained that the person was unwell I would then of tried to help by perhaps waving them down and advising them to pull over for the sake of their safety and others.

Basically you did what you thought was right at the time and you can't beat yourself up about that. I can tell you that you did far more than many people would have done so well done to you Mrs Marple smile

I think you did the right thing. It is not necessarily the case that she will have her licence taken away but if it is found that she is no longer fit to drive then it was good that you reported it.
