For the first time since our honeymoon in Edinburgh 44 years ago we shall spend Christmas Day tomorrow as just the two of us. The two daughters in this country were with us last year and they are with in-laws this time round. After over 40 years in which we almost always "did Christmas" it feels wonderfully peaceful and relaxing. Of course we have a decorated tree and will exchange our presents and play games by the log fire and watch a silly movie and probably have too much chocolate. But I haven't spent weeks planning menus and making cranberry sauce and stuffings and mince pies.
Husband will have steak and I'm a vegetarian anyway so no need for a turkey and ham.
I'm not saying I'd like it this way every year and I've loved all our family Christmas - though they've been hard work - but I'm not feeling a bit sad about this one.
We've both been ill with the cough and cold virus for over a week and I'm so glad not to have had the extra stress of worrying about the big Christmas meal.
We have family on Boxing Day and New Year's Eve and we're being hosted by oldest daughter and her partner on 29th but just for tomorrow it will be the two of us and I think it will be lovely.
Happy Christmas to all Grans and Grandpas, Nonna and Grampses, however you are spending it. And if you are in the throes of a very busy one this year, I raise a glass to you and wish you some moments of peace and rest amidst the family hubbub. And I'll spare a thought for those at home alone for whom it's not a happy choice.
And Crisis at Christmas do a great job.
Good Morning Thursday 6th August 2026
