Talking to myself

I have always had a tendency to do it. Chuntering away as I do whatever it is am doing. Last night I was cleaning the bathroom and actually had a conversation with myself complete with answers to my questions (all of which I was quite happy with).

I do spend a lot of my days alone (at work) with the occasional telephone call and sometimes the postman who is often the only person I speak to during the day.

Have I gone completely round the bend?

Do you ever talk to yourself?

Definitely not. I'm just talking to Baz the cat which is perfectly sensible. Mind you he doesn't contribute much in return which I take to mean that he completely agrees with me?

I do it all the time especially when I'm out walking on my own. I think I answered the same question here recently come to think of it.

Oh sorry if I am repeating a thread tanith I had no idea.

Just ignore me I will eventually drop off the bottom of the page go away.

I do Gilly, I do get concerned when I disagree with myself though

Thought it was normal?

Yes I too hear myself chuntering away, especially whilst out shopping.

Did you see the film about Alan Bennett and the lady who lived on his drive for years possibly called 'Lady in the Van' ? Well until Alan found himself a boyfriend he chatted to himself as if there were 2 people in the house ( they showed two people in the film) I thought at the time this could save a lot of loneliness if we had a replica of ourselves to live with.

I know it is a mad statement. In decades to come there may be robots who become our carers. I think I will have a robot carer who looks like Prof Brian Cox grin

NanKate Thu 20-Oct-16 14:37:22

The mad statement was about two of ourselves, not the robots. I wish we could edit what we say.

I find I have a very intelligent and worthwhile conversation when I talk to myself and strangly I am always right.

gillybob Thu 20-Oct-16 15:38:43

I haven't yet reached the stage where I talk to myself outside NanKate it's a matter of time though

Having said that I sometimes recite my shopping list when going round the supermarket and I have found myself declaring "oh there you are" to some item or other I have found lurking on the top shelf.

Does that count?

supernanauna1 Thu 20-Oct-16 15:39:02

I talk to myself all the time and my husband thinks it's a sign of madness!

I'm usually explaining something or a repeating a conversation to somebody and I always know exactly who I'm 'talking' to.

On second thoughts, he may have a point...............

My DH has a tendency to shout "Hello, only meeeee" when he comes in the front door I mean who else would it be? but that's by the way

He then says something like "sorry for shouting, were you on the phone? or just chatting to yourself as usual?"

Yes, I talk to myself all the time as well, quite interesting conversations sometimes, occasionally I go back over time having a conversation with someone, and then I am telling myself the things I need to do - if I say them out loud, then they are more likely to get done, rather thank thinking about them.

downtoearth Thu 20-Oct-16 17:10:41

Yes ..at least I am talking to someone I likegrin

gillybob Thu 20-Oct-16 17:12:07

I agree downtoearth someone you like and someone who totally understands you too.

When my mum became a widow she would often talk to herself, when I jokingly said "you know you are talking to yourself these days" she replied "I know and I get some very intelligent responses". I expect it will happen to me sooner or later.

nanaK54 Thu 20-Oct-16 17:49:12

Oh all the time and I always get sensible answers

millymouge Thu 20-Oct-16 17:53:10

All the time, though I always say I am talking to the dogsgrin. I find I get very sensible replies and I don't get contradicted. Also helps me remember things if I say it out loud. Just have to remember not to do it when going round shops!

I talk to things - the computer, the cooker, plants (often plants). I have very deep conversations. But very, very quietly. DH on the other hand swears loudly at inanimate objects which he thinks are out to get him, and talks to himself and me in exactly the same voice which means he gets upset when I don't reply 'cos I'm not listening!

Grandma2213 Fri 21-Oct-16 03:17:02

I talk to myself all the time as nobody else appears to hear me! When I complain that nobody listens DS3 says it is because I talk in a high pitched voice so everyone switches off! So sorry for not being a man with a deep voice. Maybe I should growl more. angry angry angry

Not to myself out loud too much, except perhaps for the odd expletive, but I used to talk to our dog (RIP, bless her) all the time, often in a baby-talk voice, 'Mummy love oo!' etc.

Was once in full baby-talk mode with her while imagining myself quite alone in the park. Then heard a stifled snort and realised that there were two blokes sitting up in a very big old tree, wetting themselves laughing.
At least I made someone laugh that day - it wasn't entirely wasted.
