Deletions on Gransnet

(88 Posts)
Shanma Mon 03-Oct-16 00:07:22

I just feel the need to say that I have not been here long, perhaps a week, and I am stunned by the amount of posts, and today an entire thread being deleted. Is this how it is all the time, or have I arrived when things are going through a particularly bad patch?

I can't understand the deletions at all to be honest. \if something is nasty, or abusive then I think it may be better if GNHQ banned the person, but please leave the thread/post or whatever for us to decide for ourselves. we are adults. I for one will not be reaching for the smelling salts if I see something a bit nasty. I will simply either add my two penneth or move onto another thread. How do you all feel about this?

merlotgran Mon 03-Oct-16 00:23:57

You're right....You haven't been here long. hmm

Wait and see before you pronounce judgement.

whitewave Mon 03-Oct-16 06:21:29

I do agree we are all adults. But of course if that is the case then we should behave like adults and avoid unkind, snide, mocking or cutting posts.
As merlot said watch and see - smile

kittylester Mon 03-Oct-16 06:30:01

Quite, merlot!

NanKate Mon 03-Oct-16 07:12:08

Welcome to GN Shanma

I think you will find a real mixed bag of deletions, narkey comments, funny threads, useful ones, especially on health and diet. The whole of life passes through this social platform.

Ceesnan Mon 03-Oct-16 07:24:03

You will also find some quite brusque comments Shanma, generally from those who regard themselves as "Elder Statespersons" !

thatbags Mon 03-Oct-16 07:27:23

Oh, what larks! Another grousing thread. ? Thick and fast, they come, thick and fast.

nanatobe Mon 03-Oct-16 07:46:52

I also have recently joined GN, my first GC due December (very excited) But I've been reading some of the threads and am getting to find my way around. I think I may get hooked! However, I'm just curious why someone shouldn't post a viewpoint as they havent been on here very long?

Badenkate Mon 03-Oct-16 08:03:00

Well nanatobe (congratulations and welcome, by the way), all I can say is to keep in mind the advice I had when training as a teacher many years ago: 'the most important thing to remember is that when you go into a staffroom for the first time, don't sit down until everyone else has, otherwise you could be sitting in someone's favourite chair.'. In other words, it is very easy to upset posters on here by transgressing unwritten behavioural rules and then you will get a combined unexpected attack. One of the first posts I made involved the lighthearted use of the word 'flouncing', which was often used in a teasing way on other sites I belonged to - the person I used it about said that she had never been so insulted, others said that it was the nastiest comment they had ever seen!

janeainsworth Mon 03-Oct-16 08:08:26

Shanma sometimes threads/posts are deleted because someone has tried to spam the site. Wait until one day you get up and there are 5 different threads from someone trying to advertise their wonder product which will defy the ageing process, or something similar.
Don't rush to judgment.

janeainsworth Mon 03-Oct-16 08:10:01

Oh and wait till half-term when someone's DGC will be having trouble with their plimsolls <yawn>

Grannyknot Mon 03-Oct-16 08:25:45

Welcome to Gransnet, shanma what more can I say? grin

Teetime Mon 03-Oct-16 09:28:38

Welcome Shamna don't forget to look in on your local page from time to time and if there is no local editor why not consider becoming one?

Mumsy Mon 03-Oct-16 10:10:44

Ive had posts deleted and could see no reason why! when asking gransnet hq why all I was told was 'its against their guide lines! ' yet some posts which blatently go against the guidelines stay posted, a case of if your face fits!

trisher Mon 03-Oct-16 10:18:49

Welcome to GN. I've had posts deleted and questioned why. GNHQ are not all that consistent as far as deletions go. Weekends seem to be the worst time (not many staff and a tendency to err on the side of caution). It provides another subject for discussion anyway.

Shanma Mon 03-Oct-16 10:23:20

Merlotgran this is not really a judgement, it is an observation, a question, and a suggestion. It matters not if I joined GN a day ago or three years ago. This is an internet forum, and as such open to all. I make an assumption now that you have joined some time ago? If that is the case you need to realise that this gives you no more rights than me to say your bit on here.
I will look at the local pages Teetime, although at the moment I would not have the time to become a local Editor.
Thanks others for all the welcomes smile
Thatbags. WHY is this a grousing thread? I cannot see that

Anniebach Mon 03-Oct-16 11:11:42

I had a post deleted recently, just accepted it, why throw a wobbly or sulk .

Welcome and post as you wish when you wish

NanaandGrampy Mon 03-Oct-16 11:27:41

Welcome !

GN do ban persistent offenders that breach the guidelines and I'm sure somewhere in those same guidelines they tell you what you can and can't post .thats the way of all forums. There are rules and that's all there is to it.

You might not mind nasty posts and be made of stronger stuff but not everyone is. You would always be welcome to have your say I'm sure as long as it's done in a respectful way and follows the rules.

As you say , you haven't been here long so maybe your opinion will change over time ? Happy posting smile

DaphneBroon Mon 03-Oct-16 11:27:45

It's nothing to do with "rights" shanma, but a reasonable observation.
I think it is hardly unfair to say, wait a bit, read a bit, post a bit, "lurk" a bit if you prefer and then see if you feel the same
A snap judgement formed on short acquaintance is rarely the same as "getting to know" anything or anybody.

Mumsy Mon 03-Oct-16 11:28:59

from what I can see no one is throwing a wobbly or sulking they are just making an observation and discussing it on a forum, we can grouse if we want thatbags after all it is grousing season! wink

rosesarered Mon 03-Oct-16 11:38:10

The grousing season! grin be sure to 'break' your shotgun when walking through Gransnet Woods though, otherwise somebody could get hurt.

Anniebach Mon 03-Oct-16 11:43:17

Mumsy, I said I didn't sulk or throw a wobbly,i did not say say anyone else did

Jalima Mon 03-Oct-16 12:02:14

Oh dear, sorry if GN is not how you thought it would be Shanma

Have you read up on the guidelines, perhaps your questions need to be put to GNHQ not to members

Personally, I think the notion of someone being banned rather than having perhaps one post deleted is rather drastic
Some threads are deleted because the OP has broken the guidelines.

Why not wait and see before you pass judgement? Often a good idea when you join something new.

Jalima Mon 03-Oct-16 12:07:51

Ps as a newcomer, telling longstanding members they need to realise this gives you no more rights than me may be true but is likely to make people rather wary of you.

Happy posting and here's hoping you do not have many deletions.

thatbags Mon 03-Oct-16 12:20:07

I called it a grousing thread, shanma, because the opening post is, essentially, a complaining post: phrases like "I am stunned by", "I can't understand", struck me as grousing. If they are not grouses, then please accept my apologies.

There have been a few similar opening posts recently. I thought uh oh, here we go again. It gets tedious.

Of course you can post what you like. So can everyone else, inlcuding calling an opening post a grousing post if that's how it appears to them.

Welcome to gransnet.
