Deletions on Gransnet

(89 Posts)

I just feel the need to say that I have not been here long, perhaps a week, and I am stunned by the amount of posts, and today an entire thread being deleted. Is this how it is all the time, or have I arrived when things are going through a particularly bad patch?

I can't understand the deletions at all to be honest. \if something is nasty, or abusive then I think it may be better if GNHQ banned the person, but please leave the thread/post or whatever for us to decide for ourselves. we are adults. I for one will not be reaching for the smelling salts if I see something a bit nasty. I will simply either add my two penneth or move onto another thread. How do you all feel about this?

nanatobe Mon 03-Oct-16 12:54:12

I'm just a bit perplexed. Nothing to do with the OP but just the instruction that followed it to not have an opinion or certainly not air it until you've been on here a while. Why should that be? Surely all comments are valid regardless.

DaphneBroon Mon 03-Oct-16 13:00:41

Wait and see before you pronounce judgement
is hardly saying that!
As I said, a snap judgement is fine as far as it goes, but as with most things/people, sometimes closer acquaintance lends a different perspective.

Is this going to turn into another of those threads where people whinge about comments bring too mealy mouthed/abrasive/permitted/deleted??
If so <yawn->

Maggiemaybe Mon 03-Oct-16 13:28:24

I rather think it is, Daphne.

I only realised recently that I had a post deleted a few months back. I've no idea why because I can't remember what I said. Perhaps there's a whole trail of "post deleted"s fanning out behind me grin

DaphneBroon Mon 03-Oct-16 13:31:56

I felt quite chuffed when I had my first deletion. A bit like "crossing the line" or an initiation ceremony.
I wonder how many of us have been deleted? (And I'm not counting deleted threads)
Anyone care to join the club?

Thatbags I was not grousing, or indeed passing judgement, merely making a personal observation, and saying what I thought may be a good idea, doesn't mean I am right, it is just my opinion. I don't think I will have anything deleted as I am not in the habit of being abusive, and I do realise that this is not a place to advertise things( Unless I think you have paid for this). I do write, and my books sell on Amazon, mostly to the states, obviously I will not elaborate or that would be advertising{ grin] This is not my target market in any case.
Jalima I wouldn't say that GN is not how I thought it would be because I had no preconceived ideas. It is though, as I said before, an open forum for people to post their opinions, thoughts, and information. As long as they post politely, and treat other posters with respect then I really would not expect everyone to agree with each other. This should not be a problem, but rather make for a more interesting forum. As regards taking it up with GNHQ rather than other gransnetters, why would I do that? I was giving an opinion, and interested in reading the opinions of other posters.

Welcome Shanma. Ceesnan's comment sums it up nicely. Gransnet has some lovely people who offer helpful and/or interesting comments, but the Gransnet Mafia are always lurking in their little clique, waving their broomsticks and invading the moral high ground. Just ignore them if they upset you, but it does make for interesting reading.

Shanma Mon 03-Oct-16 13:44:48

woopsy, did the grin thing wrong, think it should have been this?
grin There ya go!

Elegran Mon 03-Oct-16 14:12:47

I think you have hit it on the head, shanma when you say that if people post politely and are respectful of others, that is OK, and that is how Gransnet is. Most deletions are for spam, but some are for impolite and disrepectful posts - and a suprisingly large proportion of those are from posters whose names have never been seen before. There is an increase in the number of wind-up posts at half term and the start of school holidays, for some reason - it reminds me of girls I knew at school who got together to concoct a fake letter to a magazine agony aunt.

Don't be put off - most of what is posted is warm and friendly, and there is a lot of support and humour.

All comments are valid, but if someone were to move into a new home and begin their friendship with the neighbours by telling them that the trees in their gardens would have to be cut down, that everyone here should stop speaking a strange language that they don't understand, and it is dreadful that the nice young man they saw looking for work was sent away with a flea in his ear, then they might find their welcome was a bit muted.

The trees may indeed have grown taller than expected and could do with a trim, but they were there when they viewed the house. Making friends first and then mentioning it might be more effective. It is up to a newcomer to pick up the strange language - which is not being used to exclude. The young man who seemed so nice may have been a criminal well-known to the neighbours and not trusted around.

New GN members are sometimes confused by abbreviations, like DD for dear/dratted daughter. These are commonly used online and are convenient shortenings - like TV or EU. No-one has to use them, but recognising them when someone else uses them is very soon picked up, just as new terms of any kind are picked up in conversation.

The site is a magnet for advertising spam and scammers, which are deleted whenever they are noticed, as are posts from people who have clearly only joined to post things that are deliberately hurtful or misleading. Don't think that I am accusing you of that, but "the neighbours" have been bitten a few times, and are a bit cautious of posts that appear to be instantly critical.

You have the symbol thing cracked! Cheers.wine

Jalima Mon 03-Oct-16 14:45:40

Shanma the reason I suggested for taking it up with GNHQ was your idea of leaving offensive posts as they stand but perhaps banning the poster instead - that is at the discretion of GNHQ and out of our control. An idea they could consider?

Shanma Mon 03-Oct-16 14:49:56

I see your point, Elegran, and nicely put. It probably also leads to misunderstandings when facial expressions cannot be seen, even though we can add a grin or a smile, it isn't quite the same.

ninathenana Mon 03-Oct-16 15:08:42

As a long standing member of GN I would love to know who the "Gansnet Mafia are always lurking in their little clique" smile

merlotgran Mon 03-Oct-16 15:22:35

They're the ones waving their broomsticks, nina grin

trisher Mon 03-Oct-16 15:23:33

I have been on GN about 3 years now (only feels like 20 smile)and realise I have never read the Guidelines !!!

A little later on I shall pour myself a glass of wineand study this important information.

I must admit I still miss Jinglebells who has been banished from GN. I wonder if they will ever let her back.

trisher Mon 03-Oct-16 16:19:19

I miss jings as well Bring back jbf!!!

whitewave Mon 03-Oct-16 16:22:19

I've never read the guidelines either. I'm not good at reading that sort of stuff tooooooo boring.

whitewave Mon 03-Oct-16 16:25:35

Thought I'd have a look but can't find any?! Anyone know where they are please.

Elegran Mon 03-Oct-16 16:32:39

There is a tab at www.gransnet.com/forums, beside the welcome tab, which leads to "Our philosophy and rules"

Elegran Mon 03-Oct-16 16:35:04

Synonymous Mon 03-Oct-16 16:45:22

The problem with posts is that they are rarely read as they were written or even written as they are meant to be read. Perhaps we don't say what we mean to say or mean what it says although perhaps you thought it did and I didn't! confused. hmm

The emojis are useful but not comprehensive. The acronyms can be most inventive.

Nuff said? grin
