I've just been refilling the bird feeders and decided that the pots needed to be spread out a bit as everything is so lush! I picked up one of the pots of nasturtiums and put my finger right into one of those enormous slugs and now I can't shake the image or feeling - I blame GandTea for importing them. shock

Katek Fri 17-Jun-16 10:44:05

Aargh ..... no, no, NO!! I'm shuddering.

harrigran Fri 17-Jun-16 10:50:02

Yuck, I once picked one up thinking it was a curled leaf on the lawn. I can still be sick at the thought of it.

Nonnie1 Fri 17-Jun-16 10:51:40

Oh dear..

I like slugs. I compare them to whales. Very similar. Would never hurt one, or a snail for that matter.

Minibeasts.

merlotgran Fri 17-Jun-16 10:52:04

Ooooooh you are a wussy lot grin

POGS Fri 17-Jun-16 10:52:53

I was Vine Weevil hunting for ages, finished sifting the soil and repotted and planted new plants. All looks lovely.

Yesterday after this awful weather I went outside and a pot of Lillies were virtually wiped out, just rotten looking stems. For the first time I realised what I had always thought were little black seeds or nodules were horrible orange Lilly Beetle grubs wrapped apparently in poo for camouflage!! Boy they are hungry little b-----s.

wot Fri 17-Jun-16 10:55:49

I was just eating some fried mushrooms on toast when I read this. The consistency of the mushrooms are like slugs, so it's put me off!!

merlotgran Fri 17-Jun-16 10:56:38

I hate Lily Beetles with a passion as well. I took my eye off the ball mid spring and they completely destroyed the Frittilarias (Crown Imperials)

All that was left were a few stumps sad

Nonnie1 Fri 17-Jun-16 10:57:29

Never eaten a slug so can't possibly comment smile

GandTea Fri 17-Jun-16 11:34:57

Non, Slugs are like whales ?? You must have seen mine, they are about that size. They are an endangered species, certainly if they keep munching through my veg garden.

Someone has eaten one, a web site states that Spanish slugs taste bitter, which is why hedgehogs, frog, birds don't eat them.

Kitty, weren't you going to try one ?

loopylou Fri 17-Jun-16 13:15:13

It's up there with picking up a flowerpot and a frog landing on my bare foot. I don't think I've ever shrieked so loudly....sorry neighbours ?

GandTea Fri 17-Jun-16 13:17:23

LOL, we have a wildlife pond, frogs are everywhere, even indoors !

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Jun-16 13:18:14

Or putting your foot inside your gardening clog outside the back floor and finding a frog already inside it.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Jun-16 13:19:35

It's quite hard to kill a slug by stamping on it. They just seem to get smaller.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Jun-16 13:20:12

the back door. Not 'floor' hmm

Tizliz Fri 17-Jun-16 14:05:04

brings back memories of Victor Meldrew

Christinefrance Fri 17-Jun-16 15:23:39

Ugh, here in France we have large horrible orange slugs. At least they are easier to see ! !

watermeadow Fri 17-Jun-16 19:59:08

I walk around the garden with bare feet and have several times stepped on slugs. They leave thick sticky slime which is hard to wash off. Disgusting but not scary.

GillT57 Fri 17-Jun-16 23:06:44

Found a cluster of slugs when moving plant pots last weekend. Threw them in my wildlife pond for the frogs

Neversaydie Sat 18-Jun-16 09:14:45

I throw slugs next door into our unpleasant neighbour's garden .I feel better now I 've confessed .
Am finding the scatter crushed eggshells/spray with garlic water route quite effective in slug control so far this year.I have never known them go for verbena before .

My husband was picking strawberries at the allotment yesterday. A big frog jumped into his hand and he screamed like a girl!

goose1964 Sat 18-Jun-16 09:16:13

I've trodden on a few with bear feet - I know he feeling

GranE Sat 18-Jun-16 09:19:44

Yup! It sure is wild out there. Best to stay indoors - wait a minute, are those ants crawling up my walls...and woodlice in the corner of the floor and I wish that fly would leave me alone but never mind, there's a spider...and oh no - what has the cat brought in....? shock

GandTea Sat 18-Jun-16 09:22:06

Christinefrance, why didn't you keep them ? They have found their way over to the East of England, I am over run by them.

wot Sat 18-Jun-16 09:22:40

Goose, are you a bear then!?!
