I've just been refilling the bird feeders and decided that the pots needed to be spread out a bit as everything is so lush! I picked up one of the pots of nasturtiums and put my finger right into one of those enormous slugs and now I can't shake the image or feeling - I blame GandTea for importing them. shock

I saw a duck in my garden eat a small frog. It's legs were wriggling as the duck ate it. I feel bloody sick now, remembering that!

I hope you don't mind me joining in with this. It is so funny. I admit I was an organic nut, and every time it rained I said "aww" as Brian the snail and his brood of a million partied in my garden..and then I wondered why I had no delphiniums, lupins or hosta.
I have changed, you could call me a serial killer, the garden psychopath,as blue pellets and stamp is my method now, and I have no guilt (unless I think deeply about it).

Aren't you glad we cook frogs first

Greenockgran Sat 18-Jun-16 19:08:03

I have eaten one. It tasted like chicken, but it's not something I would try again. The menu was in French and I had no clue. Just the thought of it now is eww!

Greenockgran Sat 18-Jun-16 19:38:05

Hate to scare anyone, but, teeny tiny baby slugs crawl into lettuce leaves and go unnoticed! My bet is we have eaten plenty in our time!!!!

Slugs - we eat snails so why not slugs?

I cull them nightly - cant bear thought of torture by drowning (beer trap) or pellets so I kill quickly by cutting in half. Then leave the dead slug and all its 'friends' appear there the following night to eat the remains of the dead slug....

I hate hate hate slugs!especially since dogs can catch lungworm off them or their slime, I keep my dogs toys in a bucket of salt water to make sure they are slime free, and I put salt down to keep them off my step, I don't like doing this but they make me cringe, I'm glad someone else thinks they look like whales, I think the big black ones do, YUCK!

My hubby once made a beer trap when he had collected a fair few slug he tipped contents onto the compost heap cue several drunk birds staggering around the garden after eating said slugs. I know we shouldn't but how we laughed

All i can say is thank god for slug pellets!!!! I dont really like using chemicals in the garden but if i didn't i would have no young veggies or plants growing!!!!

I'm sick of my potted lilies being systematically destroyed by the Red Lily Beetle. At first I kept an eye out for them on the plants, picking them off and crushing them underfoot, but more keep appearing and I can now only watch helplessly as the plants become ever more ragged and disgustingly festooned with slimy black poo. I won't bother with lilies next year!

Also planted some clematis this year as I love them - only to have those gnawed to b*****y by snails and/or slugs, despite using slug pellets. It's so disheartening. We seem to have thousands of them this year. I don't know how to protect clematis- you sprinkle pellets on the soil (or use Nemaslug which is very expensive and I'm not sure it's worked very well) but how to you protect the leaves and shoots when snails seem to leap down on them from somewhere else?

Never wanted to resort to pellets but it's either that or very little garden!

Anyone know which bedding plants snails and slugs DON'T eat? I've planted up some pretty puts and tubs and I'm not sure I've made wise choices....

They don't like fuchsias and I do. When I plant out young seedlings /plants I put the middle section of a lemonade bottle round them until they are well grown this seems to work as slugs appear to only like soft young shoots. Have read that they do not like peppery plants and they do leave the rocket and chillies alone but eat the like radish! Also dahlias have to watch for young shoots coming through if I leave any in overwinter.
