Admiration for Jo Brand

Quite agree - she was already in pain when they interviewed her on Sat so hope the pain went off!

She doesn't look a well girl - and the weather is grim. Might have been netter to choose to do the walk in the spring or summer. She is not a fit woman and could do herself a damage.

Just seen her interviewed on TV. She is struggling, but hasn't lost her sense of humour. I have great admiration for her! I might even send a donation, although I am not a great fan of Sport/Comic Relief etc.

I really admire her for her determination in doing this challenge. I live in the Peak District and know what she is facing up on the hills. Well done Jo!

I have nothing but admiration for her. It can be challenging walking up there in good weather if, like her, you aren't a seasoned walker but it's brutal in the winter. I hope she completes her challenge without too much of a toll on her body.

Much as I like Jo Brand.......is it just me - why do people do this?
Why not do something useful for charity instead of punishing yourself? I guess it gets the publicity but what a waste of energy that could be put to better use - not to mention the risk to health. There - I've said it!

I am with Rock on this , what a stupid idea these "challenges " are , go paint a pensioners house , dig someone's garden , cook for the homeless but walking in the rain , snow.... whatever is pointless

I agree to a certain extent with rockgran; however, doing a challenge and collecting money on the way and from sponsors can be fun, invigorating and could raise a lot of money as well as giving a sense of personal achievement..

But this challenge would seem to be ill-advised in this weather - how fit is she? - hope she is OK,

regular medical checks and an accompanying group means it isn't exactly a cost effective method of extracting money . And up the Pennines , how many passer-by's are there to drop the odd fiver ?

I don't think the odd passer-by is the target audience aggie. The aim is to generate donations from those of us hearing of it on TV, radio, social media etc. I would also assume that most of the back- up crew are also donating their time. The last I heard from a day or so ago was that she had raised over 1/4 million pounds from donations. That's going to help an awful lot of people! Maybe she is mad to do it - but we need a few mad people in the world to show what we can do if we try. Sometimes it ends in failure, but at least they tried.

Good for her! She was a speaker at a conference some years ago and to me she is inspirational, and incredibly funny.

I find walking is soothing, so perhaps she'll gain something for herself from it too.

It certainly isn't pointless, it is gaining publicity and raising awareness (and she could have taken an easy option, but hasn't) so good for you Jo!

DH, DD and I are planning to do the same walk next year.

I do like Jo , but I feel the energy could be useful as well as publicity generating , if she was doing something useful it would be even better .......... in fact I can't even think what she is raising money for

It's for the Sports Relief Challenge, so along with many other fundraising events, the money will go to a multitude of places.
Jo chose to 'Get off the sofa and walk 150 miles in 7 days', and I'm sure there will be many others raising money through novel means.

I do admire the effort - I just think the effort could be more useful. As aggie said - digging someone's garden would be of more use but still a challenge.

But digging someone's garden just benefits one person. Raising a lot of money benefits lots of people, including, if necessary, getting someone to dig the garden.

Now that probably would finish her off...

It just proves the Romans were right watching the gladiators fight it out from the safety of their seats , we love to watch suffering , and are willing to pay . I meant a sponsored dig , not just a bit of gardening ...... yes it would be too much for her !!

And don't start me on about those "celebs" visiting poor benighted subjects benefiting from these antics , and going home to their luxury lifestyle

Yes, I meant a sponsored dig with lots of publicity - not just helping a neighbour. You could still film it and raise money. I'm sure it would be very entertaining.

I like Jo Brand very much and think she is very plucky to take on this challenge, especially not being a super fit person. I also think, though, that such enormous effort could be put to more constructive use, but perhaps people wouldn't donate as much money if there wasn't some sort of spectacle or endurance test to watch - shame really.

Anyway, I hope she manages to get through it OK.
