What is everyone doing for New Years?

Absolutely nothing! Will probably be tucked up in bed with a book by 10pm ?

Nothing here either. Will certainly be in bed long before midnight!

No idea. DH has been working night shifts so we'll probably go to bed. Celebrating with the family on Friday at a reasonable time.

I much prefer to go to bed early to read also. There is zilch for me on TV. No doubt there will be fireworks going off here.

Nothing here either my daughter and grandson are coming to eat with us on New Years Day but thats it for us, we haven't been out on NYE for a long time..

We are going to a dinner/dance with four other couples.Should be fun but we are still coughing after recent cold and feeling tired. Taxi at one am a bit daunting at the moment!

DH and I were just saying the other day that at any other time of the year we have no problem staying up late because we're watching something good on the telly and sharing a bottle of but NYE just drags and drags. Even if we cook a nice supper and stick some Prosecco in the fridge for midnight we spend most of the time looking at the clock.

DD says she'll pop over for a drink tomorrow night so, that'll be about ten minutes before midnight just to show willing.

We can't be bothered with it really.

The new year has never been big in our family. DD works shifts and happily works new years eve and new year's day and as a result almost always gets Christmas Day off, which is the way she wants it. We will be in bed very early this year as I have hurt my back and I am in considerable discomfort and DH has badly crocked his arm, we think it is RSI, and is in real pain, so neither of us is sleeping that well.

Expect I'll be reassuring a hyperventilating dog once the fireworks start
Poor Grace is having her operation on her tail tomorrow morning, (to remove the last 4" or so as it is not healing well since her accident 4 weeks ago) so maybe the after effects of the anaesthetic might help her to feel sleepy.

Any tips to keep me calm?

A wee dram?

We don't usually do anything preferring a nice meal the next day but we have been invited for drinks at a neighbours and drinks the next day at a friend's house. This is all lovely but DH keeps saying 'just one drink' to me.

It's quite a while since we celebrated NY in a party fashion.
We will try and stay up till 12, have a kiss to welcome 2016 and then to bed. Or.... we might already be in bed but will be sure to acknowledge midnight. No pans for a special dinner. Never have done.
Hmm.. we got gift vouchers for a meal , might suggest we use them on NY Day.

Nothing. We nearly always stay up and see the New Year in, but I really don't know why we bother . Yet another NYE with Jules Holland [yawn emoticon] I'd much rather be in bed with my book - no point trying to sleep because I'd only be woken at midnight with all the fireworks going off.

Best of Luck to Grace from Peggy and Millie. The anaesthetic should make her sleepy for quite a while so fingers crossed she won't re-act to the fireworks.

I took Peggy to the vet for a booster top-up this morning and the roller blind on the surgery door didn't quite meet the bottom of the glass panel so from where I was sitting I couldn't help but see that the dog in front of us was being put to sleep. I couldn't move because the waiting room was full and all the animals were settled so I tried to focus on my feet but you know how it is when you feel you just have to look?

Oh merlot how very very sad. At our vets they are very discreet and the owners don't have to face anybody else on the way in or out and can use a side entrance.

That's what made me curious, Alea as the owner hadn't waited with the rest of us and the receptionist took care of the payment without him having to go to the desk.

I wished I wasn't next because the older I get the more emotional I am where animals are concerned. I know the vet well and I could tell she wasn't her normal cheery self.

They must hate it.

Hopefully DH and I will be sound asleep which is more than likely as the last of our family leave to go home in the morning. Lovely to have them all but it will take a while to recover!

Alea - hopefully Grace will still be sleepy from her anaesthetic, hope the surgery goes well and she manages to wag again.

calls it his anaesthetic - it might be just the thing for you too.

New Year's Eve
(sorry to be picky but I can't stand it when people say "New Years" or "what are you doing for 'Valentines'")

DH and I meeting up with 20+ other goodfriends as we have done since kids were in primary school! In those days kids came too and were all supposed to be asleep in sleeping bags though in reality racing about whist us young parents enjoyed a meal and a few bottles. Over the years we have developed all sorts of 'traditions'! We take it in turn to host and the host allocates 'guests' a course to provide. We have :canape, hors d'ouvres, soup, fish, meat, vegetable, dessert, cheese, coffee & petit fours. We also each have to do a 'turn' known as inter-courses so the meal is spaced out ..start about 8;00 meat and veg b4 midnight the rest after! Often have fireworks at mid-night plus champagne and Auld Lang Syne. In our prime we stayed awake and moved seamlessly into breakfast! Now we usually disperse about 2:00 with some having snuck off sooner or snoozed at the table!
