I don't like to carry too much cash around, so use the same credit card for most purchases, and ALWAYS pay it off at the given time. Unfortunately in October I missed the payment date by 1 day (my fault), so was charged £12 late payment (fair enough) plus interest. Fortunately I check this account regularly and discovered this fairly early on so immediately made a complete repayment of all debts, included a sum I thought would cover the interest, etc., and so everything went smoothly, and Novembers bill came in as clear. Then, I was checking payments for this month and I am being charged 44p interest. Now, I know that it is not a lot, but it will mount up, so I thought I would send the company an e-mail, the telephone is hell for me, as I cannot hear very well at all. However, having sent the e-mail, I decided to risk the phone with the help of the other half. I got through to a really nice young man (via the o.h) who agreed that should not happen, and cancelled. The next morning, another equally nice young man phoned and spoke to me (via the o.h. again), and we talked about the £12 late charge, the interest I had been charged etc., and he told me not to worry everything had been sorted, and we would receive a £21. refund. A nice story about one of the Giants.

PRINTMISS, I pay my credit card bill in full every month by direct debit and have never had a problem. I don't have to think about it, except for making sure there is enough money in the current account.

Do you still get the statement each month Liz? I would be a big wary of direct debit of I didn't see the payments itemised.

I pay mine by Direct debit, have done ever since I missed a payment. Yes you get a statement as usual for checking and they take the full amount on the last possible date so giving you the full interest free period.

Isn't it lovely to hear such a nice tale of good customer service. smile

I use cards more than cash though it's usually my Debit Card.

If I use my Credit Card it is faithfully paid off at the end of each month. The only time that I may pay interest would be January when I've used the Credit Card a bit more than usual in the December and I use two payments to clear it rather than use money from my savings account (which might not get put back).

Like Liz and Pittcity I have an arrangement so if there is anything on my credit card it automatically gets paid off when due.

But that's great to hear of such good customer service PRINTMISS

I have had no problem with paying in full by DD with M&S for me and Barclaycard for H with POA for him. I get a request which says " as you pay by DD the full amount will be taken on ? Of Jan/Feb. then when the next request comes it says paid in full on ? Date. I have found it great as we were missing payments but no longer.

Thinking about this, I am going to set up a direct debit account - I do not know why I have been so 'anti' - everything else is done by direct debit, but for some reason, I find it hard to do for card payments. It suddenly occurred to me that if I was not able to make the monthly payment myself, then it would automatically incur the late payment and interest, so it was a good move on my part to write this, and get some good advice from you all. Thank you.
