Oh, ethelbags, I envy your ability to listen to Christmas music and not be tempted to chuck something at the wall. It drives me mad, to be honest, especially in the shops where the false jollity of the whole thing is just a reminder of the commercialisation of Christmas. There! I've become a grumpy old woman.

The Pogues for me and Kirsty McColl? I love all the crazy mixed up emotion of the music and lyrics - beats all the mushy stuff - although I do well up to Drummer Boy whoever sings it and, of course, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer! Takes me back to my childhood that one - happy days.

I don't like the wall-to-wall, often tinny, Christmas music in shops though.

When a Child is Born, by Johnny Mathis, I always feel as if Christmas has arrived when I hear it.

With jings and the lovely Annie Lennox CD, I come over all folky at Christmas, The Albion Band, Maddy Prior and then some Kings and finishing off with some Gregorian Chant.

A critic wrote years ago that 'When a Child is Born' was mawkish
However, if he had heard it sung by a choir at a carol service in a cathedral as I did the other day I'm sure he'd change his mind!

I like Carols sung properly not crooned or as played in shops on a repeat tape by groups of singers who sing with no change of tempo etc and sound bored stiff.

I don't like "When a child is born" too sentimental.

I dislike mixing "Carols" (as in songs telling a religious story) and singing totally secular Christmas songs. My small choir does that at what is supposed to be a carol service. "Jingle bells" seems all wrong in a service.

The Pogues are even worse singing about Domestic Abuse. I assume its supposed to be ironic, I wonder how many people see it that way.

I love the tinny, repetitive songs played in the supermarkets. I know Christmas has arrived. I do love Carols too though, especially 'In the bleak midwinter' and 'Away in a manger'.
Carols also make me think of easter as I will be looking for the first easter eggs after New Years Day. lol

What finally switches my fairy lights on is a Salvation Army Brass Band playing any Christmas music whatsoever. Even in the seventh circle of Hades that is Milton Keynes shopping centre, they lift one right out of it to another sphere
