I'm going through a rough patch at the moment and the bu****s on the radio have just played Ground control to Major Tom and Luther Van Dross Dance with my father And I'm a wreck. Why do they do this? They're only pop songs from another life time. Any one else have this problem?

Nope.

Hi stansgran it happens to me too whether I am going through a difficult time or not, for no apparent reason. Sometimes it's just the person's "achingly beautiful" voice that sets me off. I wrote on here awhile ago about how I "had a little greet" smile in the middle of the street once because a young busker sang 'You raise me up".

Sending you hugs.

Yep,me too. Can not listen to the music of Les Miserable in the car, can't stop myself from sobbing. Also Moon Riber as it reminds me of my Dad.

"You raise me up" always gets me going too.
Lots of songs make me tearful

A Welsh male voice choir could sing the alphabet and I'd well up.

Love is a many splendid thing, I cry my eyes out every time I watch this film with the same title.

I can't listen to Bright Eyes, Dedicated to the One I Love or For the Good Times without crying.

I don't usually cry at songs but when I hear The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics I get a lump in my throat.

fields of gold....

I appreciate music ( all kinds) and listen to it all the time, but don't have any 'special' songs that would make me feel tearful.

Two little sisters by Carly Simon

loopylou Mon 02-Nov-15 19:27:32

Oh goodness, please don't start me blubbering....
Ground Control to Major Tom, Somewhere Over The Rainbow (by Eva Cassidy it was played at a friend's funeral which wrecked it for me), Abide with Me, The Air that I Breathe, The Long and Winding Road.....far too many to mention.

Welsh male voice choirs do it too....

hmm

The Carter Family by Carly Simon. Thanks Lellyb you reminded me.

Always there. The Howard's Way theme. It was my beloved late husband's and my favourite.
We played it at the start of every sea passage on our boat, and the organist played it as I followed his coffin out of the church.

'No Regrets' by the Walker Brothers (among many which bring a tear to my eye - sometimes a lot of them...)

merlotgran Mon 02-Nov-15 20:19:05

Not a song but 'Sunset' played by the Royal Marines always brings tears to my eyes.

hildajenniJ Mon 02-Nov-15 20:20:57

Yes, I'm a blubber too. For me it's "Forever Autumn" and, strangely enough, the duet from The Pearl Fishers!

Katek Mon 02-Nov-15 20:25:05

Every Time We Say Goodbye sung by Ella Fitzgerald-my mother chose it for my father's funeral. Says so much about them. Also Stars from Les Mis and a pipe band playing The Black Bear

Katek Mon 02-Nov-15 20:27:23

Oh I love the Pearl Fishers duet Hilda! Particularly if it's the Robert Merrill and Jussi Bjorling recording

Having lost my daughter six months ago, I went out for the first time to a meeting - U3A with a speaker on the history of popular songs. I was fine until he came onto the wartime songs and played 'We'll meet again'.........

Anniebach Mon 02-Nov-15 20:53:45

'she' the last record my husband bought me before his death. 'The Way We Were' Streisand , 'Myfanwy' Bryn Tefril
