Is there such a thing?

Owing to ongiing stomach discomfort, I spend my life in inexpensive straight leg M&S jersey trousers but today we are going out for lunch and I put on some 'smart' trousers. I am so uncomfortable that I will have to revert to normal.

So, are there any 'smart' ones about?

Don't tell anyone but if I was going out to lunch I might wear the M&S straight-legged jersey trousers. Just bought two new pairs and they can look fine with a smart top and your legs will be under the table most of the time anyway.

Unless you're going to somewhere incredibly posh of course!

Kitty Are you saying that you can’t zip up the fly?
If so there is a way of fixing that.

I have some grey flared ones I bought for wearing out but I still feel they look a bit "leisure wear". I wear them out to lunch & visits, because they're not robust / dirt repellent enough to wear at home where I 'm always gardening, de-cluttering or DIY-ing.

I've noticed a lot of younger generation wearing similar in pubs / town centres though. & they are comfy.
They're Ginna Tricot.

No, I can but the material has no give. Similarly jeans.

My usual answer is a clean pair of my usual trousers as the knees won't have 'bagged' yet.

The jersey trousers I've bought from M&S do tend to shrink a little so I stretch out the legs when they're damp and that gets rid of the bagging too.

Bonmarche have a good range of trousers, also they do leg lengths starting at 27 which is fine for me.

I have just bought 2 pairs of jacquard straight leg jersey trousers , grey and brown, from Bon Marche sale,on line, for under £16 each. They are LOVELY. V comfortable with an elastic aged waist (I have IBS ) and look smart.

joannapiano Sun 18-Oct-26 12:53:33

Sorry, elasticated waist!

Sadly Bellah not the 33/34 that I need.

Kitty
Attatch a piece of elastic to the button hole side.
Have the elastic long enough to go across your middle *with the fly open.
I forgot to say make an elastic loop.
Attatch that loop to the button on your trousers.
You will then have no discomfort on your stomach and nobody will know.
Thats providing your not tucking your top in 😂 only joking.

I make my trousers or jeans looser at the waist by using a ponytail band looped through the buttonhole and the button. Undo the button first! I keep one of these bands in the pocket of each pair of trousers or jeans just in case.

Just looked at the website, they do a range of smart jersey trousers, very good value and the leg lengths seem to start at 25.

Not Jersey, but I’m a big fan of bengaline trousers - they’re a bit stretchy, but not baggy (unless they’ve been worn to bits!). Lots of places stock them, but if you want to push the boat out, try Robell.
