Happiest place to live

DD posted on her FB the results of a survey that said Edinburgh was the best place.
That's where DD lives

Well I think this is the happiest place to live.

How can you judge , there are so many different reasons why different people might be happy or not in any given place.

My house is - mostly!

Exactly, it may be heaven to some, not to live within driving distance of , say McDonalds, and hell to others!
Must you be near theatres, cinemas, bookshops?Do you want to be surrounded by greenery for as far as the eye can see?
must you be near the sea?
I think we would all like the crime rate to be low, people generally friendly etc but all other things are in the eye of the Beholder.

We sometimes pop into Wolverhampton on the tram. It's not at all miserable and certainly not as run down as some places I've been. The people are friendly and there are some lovely parts of Wolverhampton as there are in most towns and cities.

I am reading a very interesting book on my kindle called "A Year of Living Danishly" - it tells the tale of a couple who spent a year in Denmark with him working for Lego and her, a journalist, writing about the fact that Denmark has been judged to be the happiest country in the world.

By the way, my OH spent part of his childhood in Wolverhampton and used to describe it as "the arse-hole of England" - he hated everything about it.

Housing is very cheap there!

Of course, there may be a good reason for that.

I'm only a very part-time resident of the Western Isles - 1/52 or 2/52 per annum but must admit I am happiest when I am there. This is due in part to having the whole family all together there as I would not be as happy without them. We are all agreed that if work permitted or we won the lottery we would move to Barra and live there at least until the DGC leave school.

1 school both primary & secondary, swimming pool, library, superb beaches, machair, sunsets, mild climate, the odd whopper of a storm, fresh fish, lamb, veg, hospital, ceilidhs, Feis, visiting cinema, no need to lock doors, friendly helpful people, football team, golf course, tennis court, wonderful thrift shop and sales of home baking, a toffee (tablet) factory, great pubs with live music, peace and quiet. 5 hours to Oban on the ferry but only 40mins to Glasgow on the wee plane. They don't call it Barradise for nothing.

Home is where the heart is.
A front door you can close against the world if you so wish.
A welcome mat for friends a family.

These reports are daft aren't they. Some people - perhaps because of their own cheery dispositions or perhaps because they are quite comfortably off - are happy wherever they live. Some people - however fortunate they may be - are glum by nature.

On the other hand, I've noticed in these "Best and Worst Places to Live" studies, that the best areas are often the most affluent ones and vice versa for the worst. I expect it is easier to be happy in an attractive town with high employment and good amenities than it is to be satisfied with a run down town with boarded up shops, high crime rates and poor amenities.

I second Granny23 on The Outer Hebrides being a lovely place to live. I have lived in many parts of the UK, to me this is a magic place, The best here in my opinion apart from the wonderful scenery and wild life, is the people, they are the kindest most caring people I have ever known

rosesarered it is true some houses here are cheaper, they are mainly cheaper because land to build cost less than else where, there is a lot of land not built on, our house was not cheap to build because of transport cost. every thing has to be brought onto the Island, building material, food, clothes etc.

we all want different things from life, I like villages best, but to be near towns when I want to go there.
