Bit worried about DD...

She is 37 weeks pregnant and is huge - she is not all that tall and has put on 3 stone. The baby is said on scans to be a normal size. DD is not puffy with fluid, nor is she fat - so we can only conclude that she has a vast quantity of amniotic fluid in there. But she also has a low placenta.

I would be very happy if this babe popped out a bit early. The sooner she pods the better!

It is slightly worrying as the maternity services out here are pretty hopeless, and are regularly rated poorly.

If only I could acquire GC without all this worry! I should have had boys.

keeping my fingers crossed, I wen through terrible anxiety with DD when she had DGD, high risk pregnancy and it took 4 days of induction but we finally got our little girl.
good luck flowers

Thanks ethel.

Poor Mishap! It's so hard to watch from the sidelines, isn't it? Presumably she's been scanned? That would show excessive liquor. As long as she's well in herself, with normal blood pressure, she should be fine! Try not to worry flowers

Isn't the run up to the end of a pregnancy just awful for mums of daughters? I used to wish I could do it for them.....(only joking!)

Try not to worry, Mishap

Only three weeks to go smile

Mishap Thu 02-Apr-15 21:41:55

Oh yes - I would do it for her like a shot!

She does have normal blood pressure, which is good. It just seems completely impossible that this baby is going to get out as she is the size of an elephant - none of the other 6 pregnancies of my DDs have been so enormous. And none of mine, come to think about it.

annodomini Thu 02-Apr-15 21:57:30

Don't worry, Mishap. I was like an overweight whale with DS2 but my sister (obs/gynae registrar at the time) prodded me about a bit and judged that he was about 8 lbs. He arrived right on time, 8lbs 2oz, and I lost a lot of weight quite quickly. I'm sure you are right about the amniotic fluid.

Grannyknot Thu 02-Apr-15 22:37:51

mishap I was just as worried about my (tiny) DIL who was huge towards the end of her pregnancy, so having sons doesn't help that much smile

My grandson was born by C-section at the end of a day-long labour and I was so relieved. He was a pretty big baby so the doctor who made the call for surgery did the right thing. I also fretted about her going into.Labour on a Saturday - worried about locum staff and all sorts of "nebulous fears" - but of course it was all fine.

Teehee don't know where the capital L for labour came from. Politics creep in everywhere!

Tegan Thu 02-Apr-15 22:45:04

Lets hope she doesn't go overdue; I was a wreck by the time my DIL was two weeks over her due date and had to resort to copious amounts of whisky to get to sleep at night [I don't usually drink at all!]. I'm sure she'll be fine especially with the combined good Karma coming from us all.

janerowena Thu 02-Apr-15 23:00:55

Twins! grin

More worried about hummingbird's liquor, Grannyknot.

I do sympathise so much. My daughter is 28 weeks pregnant and it's only really in the last four weeks that she has started to look obviously pregnant. I somehow can't see her getting huge in the remaining weeks, but who knows?
My concern for her is that this is a much wanted first baby, but she will be a single mother at 41. It is all so very daunting and I just hope that we will be able to give her all the support and help she will need for several years to come, but we're not exactly spring chickens and I do worry that our failing health will leave her coping by herself. I can't see me ever getting a good night's sleep again tbusad
I'm sure she'll be fine, Mishap. I was absolutely - and embarrassingly - enormous with my first one, put on about 3 stone, but he weighed in at 8lbs 8oz and, like annodomini, I lost it all very quickly, back in my size 12 jeans after 3 weeks! How I wish I could get in them now tbugrin

One of my friend's had excessive amniotic fluid with her fourth pregnancy. Other people do look huge when they are pregnant because of the way they carry their baby. If I at all was concerned Mishap I would want my daughter to immediately see a specialist/obstetrician.

Both my DD's had one problem pregnancy each and were under the care of a specialist for those pregnancies. DD's first baby was in the breach position as was DD when she was born. DD also had leaking amniotic fluid towards the end of her pregnancy. I was very, very concerned about her and phoned the obstetrician, with my daughter's permission. He was very helpful and I felt a lot easier after speaking to him. The baby was going to be born by C-section earlier than the due date but GD unexpectedly was on her way at 37 weeks and DD had an emergency Caesarian.

It is a worrying time when DD's and DIL's are at the end of their pregnancies. Sending best wishes. flowers

Hope all goes well for the last few weeks, mishap. flowers

I've been lucky with my DD's pregnancies. Everything running smoothly except that I had to cancel going to a gransnet meetup near Manchester the day before she was due to be induced because she was two weeks overdue. As it happened she went into labour naturally after breakfast and was back home for dinner the same day. DD reckons she's one of those women who just have long pregnancies. If she gets pregnant again I think she'll assume a 42-week pregnancy.

I must try and visit her to coincide with one of the northwest gransnet meetups again. It'd be nice to see anno and wheniam64 again and some I haven't yet met.

I know just how you feel. Absentdaughter is imminent but after several emergency Caesareans in the past it's all a bit of a worry, especially as she really doesn't want another C-section. The last baby was very nearly 10 lb and it looks like this one is a a big boy too. All I can do is make it clear that I am available to look after the other children, cook meals, clean loos and, once she is home – which she does fairly speedily, C-section or not – look after her.

Grannyknot Fri 03-Apr-15 07:42:32

Mishap Fri 03-Apr-15 13:14:27

My friend's DD lost a GC because of the incompetence of the registrar, who left the C section too late and managed to slice through the DD's bladder! Now you can see why I am hoping she can have a normal birth - the services here are abysmal.

I know that I am worrying unnecessarily really - it is just that this story is stuck in my mind! Looking forward to cuddling new GS!

Reading this makes me glad I have no daughters.

Both of my sons were born by emergency section after I had horrendous labours, both DS1 and I nearly died during the first one. I would be a nervous wreck if I was the mother of a pregnant daughter.
My DGD2 gave birth five months ago and that was bad enough, thankfully she had a trouble free birth.
The only one of my grandchildren who had a traumatic birth was DGD3. DIL suddenly went into labour at 30 weeks, the baby was distressed so had to be delivered by emergency section. I was very worried for them both.DIL recovered quickly but DGD was very ill for the first few days. She is now a beautiful 18 year old.

Try not to worry Mishap.I know it is hard not to.

NfkDumpling Sat 04-Apr-15 07:31:55

I was worried when DD2 turned into a balloon with her pregnancy. I was concerned as she's vegetarian - never makes a fuss about what she eats - just no meat. So I was worried the baby wasn't getting the right nourishment. Her DD, her first and only child, was big. Just over 9lb. But DD shrank back to her normal slim size very quickly. I don't know how much she put on, or what she weighs now as she won't talk about weight, says it's irrelevant!
I'm sure it's nothing to worry about - doesn't stop you though, does it!

NfkDumpling Sat 04-Apr-15 07:35:31

I put on around three stone with two of mine. I did loose it again but has left me very 'ecconomical to run'. I put on weight very easily. But I suspect most of us do.

Only boys in our house, but worries just the same.
One son in across the Atlantic .. no family about, DDIL (also no family about) was due first baby at 42. Oh how I worried, baby overdue, long labour, us and other DGPs thousands of miles away.

DDIL was determined to have a natural delivery but eventually gave in to an emergency CS, and too late for an epidural. Our DGS and DDIL and were well looked after.

However, DS was so beyond himself that he forgot to ring any DGPs to let them know all was OK.
During extended labour and tumoil he was emailing continuously.... next half hour ... next half hour.... which never materialised.... and then when baby arrived and all was good he had been so distraught and was so relieved that it was some time when he realised OMG..... I gotta phone UK.

By that time I was climbing the walls, wondering what was happening, alternating between wanting to hug him or shake him.... Just ring us for goodness sake. When I rang him it was going to voicemail.

Of course, when the call came all was good.

Mishap Nothing will stop you worrying.... that's what mothers do flowers

Mishap Sun 05-Apr-15 11:30:01

Thanks for all kind messages.

This is likely to be the last GC - at least so they all say.....but the best laid plans......!

I shall be very happy when it is all done and dusted. If we were somewhere with good maternity services, I might feel better about it. She has been having regular checkups because of her low placenta, and they are saying that baby is normal size (and only one of them!), so it has to be fluid, as the rest of her has not put on weight. Apparently there is some problem with her abdominal muscles that have parted at the front.

mcem Sun 05-Apr-15 11:48:48

Mishap dd1 had that same problem with abdominal muscles. Turned out to be less serious than it sounds. Apparently it's most common in fit slim mums !

Nelliemoser Sun 05-Apr-15 11:56:45

My DD is due about 25th April. She is a lot bigger this time but I don't how big the baby might be. Last time DD had been in gentle labour from the previous evening she went into hospital when she was 3cm. Her waters broke as she got out of the taxi.
In the end her contactions were virtually non stop, DGS was getting distressed so they did a forceps delivery to speed things up. 3hrs from getting out of the taxi.

I think we often forget how dangerous childbirth used to be before the modern technology could monitor the babies well being in labour and safely intervene when required. Whatever the "you can have your baby behind a bush" brigade say.

DD is now a bit worried about DGC 2 arriving in a big hurry.

Yes I will be worrying. I will also be needed to mind DGS.
