Heating

..... And please excuse the grammar.

Not on at the moment as its a bit warmer this morning but anything from 15 up to 19 if its really cold. I turn it down and OH turns it up usually he's a cold morsel..

During the moving about part of the day - 19. Afternoon sitting down - 20. Evenings it creeps up to 21, unless I light the fire.

None on. Our multi fuel stove kept ticking over 24 hrs, heats the whole house so the thermostat goes off.

Also insulation is the key, keeps the heat in. x

Last winter we started keeping it on 18 instead of 20 for reasons of economy and we have done the same this year. H does complain a bit but I just tell him to put another layer on. Because we are in all day the heating is on from 6.30 am until 10pm so never has the drop in temp.We are with BG so hope to see the bills go down slightly.

Mine is not on at present but when I do switch it on it is around 18-19 degrees. My house is very well insulated which does help.

17 degrees and on a timer, but I do put it on during the day if not doing much as I hate being cold and extra layers don't always seem to be the answer.

Well insulated house, two timers ( one for bedrooms one for living areas), Have it on about 17 when pottering but 21 when sitting down in the evening.

Each radiator has an individual thermostat. The heating is on from 6.30 to 9, then again from 6 to 9 in the evening, between times and during the woodburner keeps the temperature up as we took all the doors out downstairs, bar two. There is a heat-activated fan on top of the woodburner that makes the hot air circulate around the house. It works very well. So it's usually 19C in the kitchen, but warmer in the sitting-room.

I am away for 2 months and have left my heating on constant at a temp of 13*. I would rather do this than come home to burst pipes and tanks and heaven knows what else. DD will turn it to 1x daily at the end of the month. When I am at home it ticks away in the daytime at 18* and off at night.

This house has good insulation so not usually necessary to have it on any higher than 15.

Just out of interest does anyone keep their heating on 24/7 in the Winter months? I know some say its more economical to keep it on low so the house never has to heat from cold.. but I've always been of the mind that if something is 'on' all the time it can't possibly be better than having it off for all the night-time hours.. I expect others have other ideas though

we too have thermostats on every radiator so like now, when DS is away at Uni, his radiator is turned off. We have a 7 day programmer so the heating comes on earlier Monday to Friday, a bit later at the weekends, and generally it comes on about 4 ish when I get home and goes off at about 10. As the house is extremely well insulated, it is till cosy when we go to bed. The bedroom heating comes on for an hour in the morning, at getting up time, and is then off all day until about 8pm, then it too goes off at 10. We dont have any cold spots in the house, leave doors open to circulate heat, and also have a gas fire ( 80% efficiency) to pop on if it gets nippy on a Sunday afternoon while reading the papers. Just changed fuel supplier so hoping for better bills.

I like a cold house at night. Makes the bed more snugly.

Me too jings a cool bedroom and a warm bed

We've got stuff in the walls which helps a lot but I am not convinced this new window glass is any better than the old double glazing. And it never looks really clear.

I'm a cool bedroom person as well.

We have argon gas in our large double glazed windows, you can stand next to them and feel no difference in temperature. It's probably not worth it for smaller windows. x

The thermostat is set at 17C but the thermometer next to it reads at about 20C so I think the thermostat is faulty (although it is a newish one).
The heat is off from 9.30 am until 4.30 pm unless we are in and it is really chilly. Sometimes we sit in the conservatory at a toasty 22C or 23C in the afternoon.
The radiator in the bedroom rarely goes on. We have just had thermostats fitted to some radiators so unused bedrooms are set lower than the rest of the house.

If we were going away we would still leave the heating on low twice a day because we have experienced coming back to a freezing cold house which took about 3 days to warm up!

When DM lived with us the fire was always on in the sitting room - quite high! as she couldn't move around much she always felt the cold.

Thanks everyone. My husband would be saying words to the effect of Told You So! When I'm in the house during the day I put it up to 20, which he thinks unnecessary. We have a fire in the sitting room in the evenings , and like a cold bedroom , so it's not so high then.At the moment I am wearing a thermal long sleeved vest, a woolen jumper and cardigan and a pashmina. Perhaps there is something wrong with me. (I am also wearing jeans in case anyone worried).

I keep a wrap on the chair by the computer just in case I spend too long on GN - being on GN makes you chilly

If you are sitting down all the time, 20C can feel quite cold until you get up and move around. We keep throws on every sofa and chair. When we had gas and one thermostat, I kept ours at 20C but would edge it up higher when it was really cold outside, as it seemed to seep into the fabric of the house. We would have the gas fire on as well.

Thermostat set at 15'C. Heating (oil) comes on 6.30 - 7.30am and 4.30 - 7.30pm. Very occasionally I'll put it on during the day or when visitors expected. If it gets chilly I will go outside and then it is warm when I come in. I wear layers and at night have a throw over my legs which more often than not is thrown off.
House has solid walls with a small amount of internal insulation on the walls and of course in the loft.
Perhaps I am fortunate that I live alone !!!
