Sounds awful Mareli. Can you organise an 'emergency' phone call from home? You have been flooded/burgled/a family member has been taken 'ill' and you have to return home forthwith!

Oh dear marelli it sounds like everyone's worst fears. I would be looking very closely at the weather forecast and saying you really need to get home while you can as is looks as though the weather is going to be bad. Good luck.

Matelli I've been in a situation like this and I do sympathise. I think you just need to bite the bullet and go. Find any excuse but do it. You'll probably never see them again anyway.

How awful. I agree, I think get in touch with somebody to ring you to spin a yarn about having to return home asap. 3 days is torturous under those conditions. If my ex in laws were not dead I would have thought that you were describing them although the house was stiflingly hot!

Depends where you are but there is bad weather forecast for a lot of the north half of Britain. Up to four inches of snow and freezing cold, they said.

The weather forecast includes talk of travel disruptions Marelli and I know how much you hate being out on dangerous conditions!

Or you could tell them the truth to ensure you never have to see them again!!

Oh dear this sounds like a a sitcom on the television. Make any excuse and leave. E-mailing somone and asking them to make up a plausable lie to get you home sounds like a good idea. It's what I'd do. Good luck. Please let us know how you manage to escape. I'm a noisy gransnetters

Hope you aren't expected to invite them to yours for next year! An emergency call from home sounds like the best move, if that can't be arranged then you can say you are nervous about travelling in bad weather so would like to leave early in view of the forecast. Let us know if you manage to get away. Just had a dreadful thought - they aren't GNs are they?

I do not think that ill health will work because you may be invited to sit in their local A&E for 5 hours or so.

I think that somebody checked inside your house and noticed a drip in a bedroom from the loft so you must go home to investigate. A bucket is holding the drips but DH must investigate I think.

Dig an escape tunnel.

That happened to us a few years ago; made friends with a couple on holiday and kept in touch for a while afterwards [never stayed with them, though]. Alarm bells started to ring when they'd mentioned that they'd voted for the BNP at the last election so I was a bit careful about how I let th friendchip develop. Eventually I just stopped sending them cards etc. The downside is that I didn't swap contact numbers with most of the people I travelled round America with and I regret it so much now. You can't make up a 'reason' to leave, Marelli; it's bad karma, but the weather could be a lifeline. Good luck!

Would you like a text from a "neighbour" to tell you that she is a bit concerned because she thought she saw a light/movement/smoke in your house and she knows you are away?

A lot of people seem to have similar ideas. Perhaps if we all phone/text you it could be a bit overkill!
