I am petrified that one day I will be singing it in front of an audience and start dancing, because I often dance around the house to it! I defy anyone to listen to it and still feel miserable by the end.

Much of Mahler, particularly the songs; and Richard Strauss' Four Last Songs are gutwrenching.

But for a lift I would go for the concertino for clarinet and strings by Camilleri. There is something quite extraordinary about this piece that touches me deeply every time I hear it. Part of me wonders if I heard it when I was small and do not remember, as it affects me so.

The only recording of it is out of print and can only be obtained second hand at enormous expense. There are versions with piano, but it is just not the same. If anyone has this and can help me to find this then I would be undyingly grateful.

I know what you mean - it sounds too heavy and cumbersome. DBH and I were listening to something similar a couple of weeks ago and I really wanted it to be played on a harpsichord or something lighter. Copland I think.

My son is a clarinettist so we are always looking for things for him to use as practice pieces. His favourite however is Finzi, and his bagatelles always make me feel really happy, bringing back memories of years of his playing them after school.

My DD was a clarinetist and I too have happy memories of trying to accompany her in the Finzi bagatelles. She too went past grade 8 but the arrival of children has put her playing into abeyance - she is just about to start out with it again.

I really meant music, songs that lift your spirit, made you want to dance or feel happy , there are so many moving or even gut wrenching songs or classical music, but I wasn't really thinking of those, [I know I included Nessun Dorma, which is a bit of a soulful lament, and I know what he is singing about, but just letting the Italian words slide off me and enjoy the music lightens my mood]..But not as much as Rita-meter maid!Or the Stones. Now I shall dance off to the kitchen to make a cuppa and then put a great cd on [probably from the sixties.]
