Abandoned Car?

Wait until the end of November then the police will have to move it because it's illegal for an untaxed car to be on the road.

Is it locked?

There has been an apparently abandoned car in the next close to us. I did contact the council, but as the number plate is foreign, I don't know if they can do anything at the moment. We also had one left at the top of our road for weeks, before the school summer holidays. Evidently the owner couldn't be bothered to get it moved. It had accordingly broken down, but as it was taxed, we just had to wait it out.

Thank you all for your comments. It is locked and as I said MOT until end of November as I checked it out on the DVLA website. Originally the tax should have run out end of this month, but it has been re-taxed this week for another year until Nov 2018. It’s a mystery! It’s in poor condition with smashed wing mirror.

Do you live near a university? Sometimes students returning for a new term take their belongings in their car but have nowhere to park it near their accommodation so they find a convenient street to 'dump' it until they need it again.

Or an airport or port?

It sure is a mystery especially someone going to the trouble of taxing the car for a year without moving it but there could be a really good explanation, maybe the owner is in hospital? Maybe on holiday? Maybe it needs fixing and they can't afford it yet?

So long as it has road tax, isn't blocking a drive and doesn't have smashed windows, there is nothing the police or council will do although the police do have ways of tracking owners to see if all is o.k. but then again I think it would need to be there for six months at least before they would even bother! Have you asked around neighbours?

In the grand scale of things, its a minor nuisance though so best to try to ignore it for the time being.

You can report them on fixmystreet any time. They send your report to the council, and you can update on the website, and put photos on it.

Don't most people retax cars over the internet anyway, with a direct debit these days?

A house opposite DS includes adult children and the household own 3 cars. One on the drive, one on the road and one on the grass verge outside DS's house. It is often left there for weeks at a time. Visitors cannot park outside his house and it blocks his view as he backs off his drive - and there is nothing he can do about it. Fortunately they have a hedge that partial blocks the view when they sit in their living room.

You CAN report on fixmystreet durhamjen but 3 weeks of a legally parked car is not going to be high on their list of priorities I would think.

People do get 'possessive' of the road outside their houses but if I wanted I could park my car outside anybody's house and leave it for any amount of time I wanted. That is why it is unlikely anybody will look into it at this stage.

IF it is still there in months ...different story but even then if all legit when police look into it, there is still nothing can be done...unfortunately.

Ahhh but MOT!! They will have to get that won't they? Shortly ?.....so by end of November it should be gone! Don't despair Glenfinian.

It must have a current MOT or they wouldn't be able to tax it.

Thank you all again for your comments. Will just have to wait until MOT runs out end of November. Obviously don’t mind people parking outside for a short space of time but our road is narrow and I’m having new central heating in soon and would like the plumber to be able to park, but there we are! I just wish someone would have knocked and said it would be there for a while!
