I am just finishing watching a BBC2 programme on Miriam Margoyles.
Such a brilliant actor of course .... but the rest if it? What do people think?

She thinks she is by far the cleverest and most interesting person in the world, so she can do and say what she likes because everyone thinks she is marvellous.

She is wrong. She is actually a sort of scaled down female version of Donald Trump.

Allsorts

I didn't watch it, I find her vulgar and crude.

Totally agree, would never watch any programme with her playing a part.

(& if anyone hasn't seen 'Secret Garden' yet, try to catch it, wonderful photography, and brilliant info!).

Just caught Sunday's programme coming from a garden in Bristol. Unfortunately, I was cooking at the same time so couldn't concentrate fully but it was a wonderful programme, so we'll watch it again and catch up with the others.

As so many have said, vulgar, disgusting, crude, etc. Chestnut has a precise call, "a prepared act, designed to get a reaction".

Unfortunately a chunk of any audience (eg, Norton or Ross, etc) reacts like kids hearing a naughty word, so when she drops a fart into the conversation, or her collapsed/ing/underused fanny, a subset gets the giggles and her eyes light up.

She was OK as part of a group exploring parts of India (BBC, The Real Marigold Hotel, c10 yrs ago?), when either she restrained her potty act, or they chopped it out of the broadcast film (if the latter, grateful thanks!).

These days she gets zapped as soon as she appears on a screen near us (we both detest her) -- lots of channels to watch (& if anyone hasn't seen 'Secret Garden' yet, try to catch it, wonderful photography, and brilliant info!).

Can't stand her

TheSunRisesInTheEast Tue 14-Apr-26 14:17:52

One look of her messy hair, scruffy jumpers, long floral skirts, trainers and socks, just makes me laugh 😂. She is so different to me and people around me, I find her quite refreshing 🤣. She's old, bold, has a potty mouth and isn't embarrassed to fart whenever she needs to, she's like a naughty schoolboy!! 😆

Peaseblossom Tue 14-Apr-26 14:16:00

Shelflike I'm with you on that!

Peaseblossom Tue 14-Apr-26 14:15:19

henetha Ha ha! I totally agree with you.

appletree21 Tue 14-Apr-26 14:04:43

Revolting women with her foul language. Watch something she was in!!! Heaven forbid, no way !

cc Tue 14-Apr-26 13:58:08

I'm afraid I agree with the majority here, I'm not keen on her either as an actress or on what she says. She may be an entirely different person face to face - but I doubt it!

Shelflife Tue 14-Apr-26 12:54:32

I agree , she is rude and vulgar, however............. I cant help liking her ! On the surface she is a disgusting old lady!

Elusivebutterfly Tue 14-Apr-26 11:53:12

I found her most unpleasant in the TV series The Real Marigold Hotel. She was so happy at sneakily getting out of any of the shared tasks the contestants had to do and refused to share.
Even without seeing that, I did not like her style or manner. When she is acting she seems to just be playing herself.

henetha Tue 14-Apr-26 10:47:22

Vulgar and crude she is, and I wish she would grow up and curb it, - but only a bit... I find her highly entertaining.

The story about groping the young man is true and it was one of many similar incidents but it did happen a very long time ago when such things were more likely to be tolerated at the BBC including men touching up women.

Wonder if she'll be investigated for historical "inappropriate behaviour" like so many men have? hmm

Galaxy Tue 14-Apr-26 10:08:26

She doesn't offend or shock me at all, because it is predictable as the sun coming up. I see her as utterly 'establishment' and not challenging at all.

Chestnut Tue 14-Apr-26 10:03:42

She can be very warm and friendly when travelling and meeting people but the other side of the coin is an attention seeking diva with foul habits.

So in normal situations she behaves herself quite well but put her in front of an audience and she just wants to shock everyone.

Oreo

She doesn’t offend me either I just find even seeing her repels me but the relentless vulgarity done for effect is tiresome in the extreme.
And btw if the story about her groping a young sound engineer is true is that supposed to make everyone laugh?

I find her vulgar and not at all funny.

If any man had admitted to groping a crew member he would be up on sexual assault charges.

yogitree Tue 14-Apr-26 09:17:50

I think she uses vulgarity and the like as tools for further or even lack of expression. She does not offend me. My sensibilities are not so gentle.

Harris27 Tue 14-Apr-26 09:13:58

She was good in Harry Potter. But her foul mouth and attention seeking ways puts me off. Not keen on her.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 14-Apr-26 09:08:40

Cossy

Well, this won’t make me popular, I really like her, she does have a potty mouth but she’s funny (imo) and is actually very bright.

I’m off to see her at our local theatre later in the year.

I can look past the swearing and as I have IBS not well controlled, I appreciate the farting stories.

My DM loathed her for the same reasons as those of you here do.

I couldn’t get tickets 🤬

I loved her series from Australia.

Luckygirl3 Tue 14-Apr-26 08:55:32

She was also one of the PG Tips chimpanzees.

rafichagran Tue 14-Apr-26 08:49:08

I agree with Bluebelle other than saying she should curb her tongue. Why should she?

I go on Mumsnet, the C word plus other expletives are everyday language for some, it's accepted in a way it is not here. I have worked in pubs and the swearing was rife, generally by men, they relaxed with a drink and did not have to watch their language. I suspect people don't like it because she is a older women swearing.

keepcalmandcavachon Tue 14-Apr-26 08:42:04

She's certainly a one off! The type of wise, kind and very naughty great aunt that small people would adoregrin
I like her.
