Is anyone else giving this a try?
It's by Sally Wainwright so I thought it would be good.

We might not bother again.

Allira Tue 14-Oct-25 22:10:39

Oh, sorry for autocorrect!

WithNobsOnIt Tue 14-Oct-25 22:25:12

Thought this could be interesting as Joanna Scanlan was in it. She was brilliant in The Thick Of It.

Riot was really poor and nothing more than stereotypical drivel really. No new insights or ideas.

Not a great Sally Wainwright or Debbie Horsfield fan. Both are one trick ponies. Drudgey and repetitive.

Though l did enjoy Gentleman Jack

Can someone with talent write an updated version of the wonderful Bouquets of Barbed Wire by. Andrea Newman

Maybe Abi Morgan?

People are making far too much of the menopause aspect of the drama. It isn’t all about that by any means. How many episodes have the people being critical bothered to watch?

"What is Riot Women about?

Riot Women tells the story of five women who decide to form a punk rock band and take part in a local talent contest.

Set in Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, the six-part drama charts the fortunes of the group as they navigate coping with elderly parents, adult children, marriages breaking down and work - all while they deal with going through the menopause."

BBC

So no, some of us are not making far too much of the menopause aspect of the drama in fact.

Just because some posters have a different view of it from you does not invalidate the views of those posters.

There has only been one episode so far.

Allsorts Tue 14-Oct-25 22:39:09

I watched all the episodes and I think too much made of periods and menopause, few go mad, noticed straight away Trans man in it I have liked some of her writing in the past but it's all the same formula. Men are bad, women martyrs to being a woman and what happens naturally. Nothing very new.

PaynesGrey Wed 15-Oct-25 00:29:16

Allira. There are six episodes, all of which have been available on iPlayer since 6:00 pm on Sunday.

Judging by many of the posts on here, I am not the only one to have watched it all. Nor am I the only one to have enjoyed it and know that it about much more than the menopause.

Three members of the band, the backing singers, are youngsters, one of whom, Nisha, is a major part of the story and will continue to be if this goes to a second series. Her story line is nothing to do with the menopause. Nor is Nancy's or Mary's. Nor is Tom's. Nor is Chloe's and Inez's. Nor is Tricia's and Ferne's. Nor is Keith Eckersley's.

If there is going to be a second series, and the ending certainly points to that, then all of their characters and storylines could be developed and interwoven. I think Nisha's story, based on the evidence that Holly has provided and what Keith has now told Kitty will be an important strand and why I made reference to the Panorama documentary pages back.

I can see that you want to talk it down based on watching only one episode but that doesn't invalidate the views of people who have watched the whole thing and are judging it based on the whole thing.

Loved it. Stayed up beyond my bedtime and binged it all. (And I don't often stay up beyond my bedtime for anything!)

I did the same.
Loved the music.
There's so much to it. I don't know why people are fixated on the "menopause" bit.

It’s something one of my daughters is experiencing, it’s hideous.
This discussion tends to suggest periods, perimenopause, menopause and other women’s issues are not to be spoken of in polite society. Shut up, put up, crack on juggling everything in silent martyrdom.
Sally Wainwright writes so well about women she knows and lives. Yes some exaggeration,it’s dramatic licence

Dearknees1

Living in the area where it was filmed it’s a relief to me to watch something by Sally Wainwright which is less consciously about Calderdale although she couldn’t resist a line where Kitty is urged to get the bus to Hebden Bridge and then into Halifax. Although I recognise places where it was filmed I haven’t yet been irritated by the misnaming and misrepresenting of places with which I’m familiar as I was in Last Tango and Happy Valley where I found the unrelenting focus on place a real barrier to enjoying the story. People like the Riot Woman characters do live here but I don’t believe they aren’t to be found elsewhere and that the themes aren’t universal in nature. And yes it wasn’t fun to live here whilst it was being filmed. Huge areas of car parks taken up by filming crews many of whom were quite rude and inconsiderate, If you really want to see where it was filmed come by public transport as there’s very little parking at the best of times.

Sally Wainwright has often spoken about her love of Calderdale, and it shines through in her writing. Good for her, and I know plenty of locals who aren’t complaining. All her series have helped boost tourism and the local economy in general.

As for not being fun to live here when filming took place, opinions may differ. Our village was used a lot in Gentleman Jack and it was a positive experience - we never came across any rudeness, we got a few of our paths and lanes cleared up, and inconvenience was kept to a minimum. It was quite exciting to have horses and carriages in the pub carpark and parties of enthusiastic Gentleman Jack fans visiting - I hope they all found us friendly and welcoming.

Before that, the house next door to DS was used in Happy Valley, and again it was a good experience. When DS was asked to leave his car at home one morning for continuity reasons, he was given £100 for the inconvenience. He came home from work one day to find Sally Wainwright and Sarah Lancashire at their kitchen table using the wifi - they were delightful. DDIL was shushed once when putting the rubbish out, but managed to get over it. grin

Maggiemaybe, thanks for such a positive happy post
Our glorious town centre Edwardian buildings often used for filming, our open moorland also. It’s much more fun than the occasional inconvenience

I binge watched it and loved every minute.
There just has to be another series. So much left unresolved.

Mine doesn't so if I do want to give it another try I'll have to watch it when he's busy elsewhere.

What do you mean Allira .
Do you only get to watch what HE wants to?
Kitty’ll write a song about that for you!

Mine’s enjoying it and I’m loving it, so no conflicts of interest here. We’re not bingeing, even though I’m tempted - it’s perfect Sunday evening viewing, imho.

MollyNew Sun 19-Oct-25 22:21:09

Another brilliant episode. I'm quite enjoying watching one episode a week. I laughed at the list of acts for the talent show - "Mr Toplis and his magical musical kittens" or something similar grin

Good twists. It gets better with every episode.

Not quite menopause ... not quite punk. But it was great. We binge watched it. Some brilliant acting.

Referring to earlier comments - I had a horrendous perimenopause for a few years - thought I'd bleed to death and end up having to have a hysterectomy - but agnus castus herb resolved it. The "menopause" is when the periods stop! I was 50. They just stopped just like that. Never had another one again. No hot flushes (although apparently I radiated heat!). My only real symptoms were getting very scatty once a month around the time I would have had a period.

Homestead62 Tue 21-Oct-25 10:08:49

I had a horrendous menopause. I suffered alone, only support being my husband and I really don't know where I would be without him. Zero help from GP and sadly with one exception, zero support from friends. I did approach one friend to be told it was so long ago she didn't remember it. I have not watched the drama yet, willing to give it a go. To anyone out there suffering like I did and wondering if you will get through another day, I hear you and I know how bad it is. Take care.

I finished episode six last night. The complex personalities, the relationships so well drawn and acted There must be a series 2.

Without giving too much away I think we all want to see a particular character get his comeuppance.
