Is anyone else giving this a try?
It's by Sally Wainwright so I thought it would be good.

We might not bother again.

The drama was unique, women in their 40s and 50s decide to form a rock band and build up a following. I didn't see much of Riot Women, but intend to binge watch it soon,

There is a second series planned Homestead62.

I’ve read reviews and comments criticising Sally Wainwright for painting a ‘‘formulaic’ men bad women good picture. The scene where Beth tells her head teacher how close she is to harming herself, how invisible she has become is a cracker.

I really felt a connection with Beth then. I know just how she felt.

I agree with Visgirl and others. Great series. Hooray, a second series is confirmed!

What I like about it is the portraying of the utter s*!+ from men that women have to put up with / or not every single day, whether it be the workplace, home or out socially to mention a few situations. My husband watched it with me and he said it was excellent and really affected him. The characters were people you cared about. We both felt for Kitty and Nisha, among others. I do hope there is a second series.

IOMGran

One poster said it was shoehorning trans people, interracial marriages and gay marriages into what doesn't happen in real life. Actually in my family I have all three.

Same here IOM gran

I was slow to the party but was hooked after one episode. Menopause is for the rest of your life really for good or bad.
But anyway if the premise is a stretch to some people the the acting surely makes up for it. The total integrity portrayed by all the characters made this a winner for me😊

Excellent series, looking forward to seeing the next one. The cast is perfect, each one a safe pair of acting hands to ensure this will be a stand out series for the amazing Sally Wainwright.
Love the twist at the end with Holly's ex husband being named by Kitty's dad as one of the x3 men involved in her abuse.

No, it wasn't Holly's ex but another more senior policeman who has already retired

We loved it. What did you dislik?

Oh crikey.

So much twisting or misunderstanding of what posters write.

Paddyann’s post seems to be calling for understanding, refuting the allegation that the BBC are shoehorning diversity. She says, Surely, we should all aim to accept people for who they are?^

Did I say I did not agree?
No.

Macy-Jacob Seelochan, who plays the very minor role of Miranda, was born in 1997 and graduated from Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 2019. They are 28.^

Didn't I say the same? That Miranda is young.
The drama is about menopausal women going through difficult times in their lives.

PaynesGrey Mon 17-Nov-25 19:50:10

That's Jonathan Pryce.

Ellie Anne Mon 17-Nov-25 18:22:19

Well I loved it. Best series in a while.
But who plays kitty’s dad?

hollysteers Mon 17-Nov-25 16:05:35

As this is the same director who turned Emily Bronte into a washerwoman/fishwife in To Walk Invisible, I’m doubtful if it will be my cup of tea and I steer clear of ‘gritty’ dramas if that is what it is.
Thumbs up for Gentleman Jack though👍

Maremia Mon 17-Nov-25 15:52:37

As described above. Worth watching. Top class actors. Strong themes.

PaynesGrey Mon 17-Nov-25 15:38:53

There is a transgender actor in it. Miranda is (probably) too young to be menopausal.

Have you still not watched it, Allira? Macy-Jacob Seelochan, who plays the very minor role of Miranda, was born in 1997 and graduated from Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 2019. They are 28.

The BBC knows it gets top ratings from anything Wainwright writes. She has explored gay relationships before, notably with Sarah Lancashire’s character Caroline McKenzie-Dawson with Kate (Nina Sosanya) in Last Tango in Halifax (over seven million viewers) and Suranne Jones as Anne Lister in Gentleman Jack (over five million viewers).

It would make for very dull drama indeed if everyone was the same.

I didn’t mean to put you off SG. Like many of Wainwright’s dramas, it’s hard-hitting in places. Kitty’s story is very hard but for seemingly the first time since adolescence, she finds people (women) who accept and want to help her - as she helps them to do something exciting by writing songs and fronting the band with her amazing stage presence and powerful voice. Rosalie Craig is excellent as Kitty. Her facial expression when people are kind to her is extraordinary, as if it’s something she hasn’t experienced since she was a child and her mother disappeared.

You are showing great restraint SG to be able to save this until Christmas.

Anyway, just trying to refute this repeated claim that the drama is all about the menopause and those getting in a tizz because a very minor character in a cast of over 50 people (excluding the crowd scenes) is transgender.

Joanna Scanlan is a fantastic actor. Have you seen After Love? It’s another masterclass in restraint as she shows in Riot Women (most of the time). If not, one to put on your Christmas list.

Allira I can only assume that you have still only watched one episode or you would know that your statement "the whole point of this series is that it is about the menopause' is totally wrong.
StripeyGran please be reassured - it is intense and hard hitting but also very funny.

I absolutely love her work and I love Joanne Scanlan. Spotted Lorraine Ashbourne the other day.

I will destist until Christmas!

I still think paddyann didn't understand the point about the menopause.

Sally Wainwright writes dramas about strong women, in this case women going through menopause and crises which we might all recognise

There is a transgender actor in it. Miranda is (probably) too young to be menopausal.

ViceVersa Mon 17-Nov-25 14:17:58

Totally agree with everything you said, PaynesGrey - it was about much, much more than just the menopause. Loved it and can't wait for a second series!

Fabulous series!!! I wish I was one of them.

StripeyGran Mon 17-Nov-25 14:01:25

Child rape. Criminal gangs. Misogyny and sexual assault in the police force. Misogyny and inappropriate male sexual behaviour in general. Grubby, male underground social media networks. Alcohol and drug abuse. Depression and suicide. Infidelity. Marriage break up. Empty nests. Isolation. Feeing undervalued at work.

Oh dear, PG, I am saving this for Christmas. Maybe not suitable and it will be back to Tosh, her missing child and her Seasalt jumper!
