Amandaland is awful; far too frenetic with no stable characters to balance it, (not enough Joanna Lumley).
Just silly.

Lesley Manville is one of my favourite actresses, why on earth she decided to play mum is a mystery to me, agree with Calendargirl.

After my initial disappointment I really enjoyed it.
Amanda is dreadful as is her mother but the other characters grew on me and I hope there will be a second series.
For those who haven’t watched The Cockfields ,please give it a try.

Am sure my AC would never watch it, but if they did, I fear they would think it reminded them of me and their dad!

It reminds me of Detectorists but, unlike that wouldn’t appeal to young people. It’s nice seeing the Isle of Wight, though, somewhere that I’ve never been to.

Detectorists is up there with my favourite ever programs, I’ve watched it over and over, and never get tired of it.

It's very good indeed. I was a bit sceptical when we first started watching it, but grew to love it.

Just started watching a couple of episodes of Cockfields. Laughed out loud. Loved Bobby Ball. It’s a pity he wasn’t here to do the second series. The Scot’s guy is no where near the gentle humour Bobby had.

I liked Bobby Ball too. He played Lee Mack's father in Just Going Out as well.
So sad that he died from Covid.

We love the Detectorists too. Another great comedy was The Cafe and First Born.

I think we bits are really good at gentle, observational comedy.

I also found the Sue Johnstone character in ‘The Cockfields’ annoying.

It’s a wonder the son didn’t strangle her, fussing and twittering all the time.

How long were she and Ray meant to have been married? Was Ray a widower? And did they bring David, Ray’s son, up together from him being a little boy, alongside Simon?

The back story never seemed very clear.

Amanda is a monster but she’s far better than the hideous Julia of Motherland who is even more self centred.
You start to feel empathy for her, thanks in part to lovely actress Lucy Punch, she’s got an awful mother and a horrible (ex)husband but she’s knuckling down and surviving.

Thanks to this thread we have started watching The Cafe and The Cockfields and are really enjoying them.

I haven't watched Motherland but binge watched this series and loved it..

I started watching The Cockfields after reading the recommendation on this thread. I’m really enjoying it. I preferred the late Bobby Ball as the husband and dad. But Gregor Fisher is starting to grow on me.

The most recent one I watched when he drove his son David to meet his date was very moving. Ben Green as David is a great actor in this part. He frequently tugs at my heart strings and moves me to tears. He’s such a lovely young man and I hope as the series progresses that he finds love.
