The ending was rather sentimental, maybe not true and I'm sure they didn't marry. In fact I think he's still single.
I was very moved by the book and the programme, especially as I was brought up in a town near Wolverhampton and can remember many Indian immigrants arriving in the area in the 1950s and 60s.

I enjoyed ‘The boy with the topknot ‘ . I wondered for a while why they were all calling him Satnav !

What a lovely programme about such painful issues. The mother was a fantastic actress I thought.

I've got so many good programmes to catch up on; and I've just discovered Motherland. After watching the first episode and thinking it was over the top and very contrived, I found myself watching the whole series. And Peaky Blinders is back tomorrow....

I met Sathnam briefly at a Birmingham Literature Festival. He is very friendly and prepared to discuss his work.

I enjoyed that I thought it was a good storyline and well acted, a bit Cinderella at the end but why not !
I thought the Mum played a good part caught up between east and west between duty and love trying hard to tie all ends and keep everyone sealed together
There is a problem in all cultures with mental heath issues probably Asian cultures are a bit more steeped in tradition and not so used to looking at things from a different perspective
Yes a good drama

We watched it and thought it very good, and I liked the chosen actors. I do hope they had a happy ending.

It was very good. I assumed they did marry, and if so it may not have been plain sailing but hope it worked out.
There is a big problem with mental health stigma in some asian countries and i thi nk this can only help the situation.

Excellent.

I've just watched it - very good. Wasn't entirely convinced by the rather "soppy" ending though.

I settled down with my knitting tonight to watch the dramatisation of a book that I loved (book of the same title as above, although I think it has now been reprinted with a different title). Sathnam Sanghera who wrote the book, is a Sunday Times journalist - it's his memoir.

It's brilliant, do watch it.

Here's the Guardian review:

Here's the thread on it when I read the book back in 2014:
