Did anyone watch this? I was surprised to realise abortion is still a criminal act if it isn't performed within the perimeters of the act. And the stories of the women who had non-surgical abortions and miscarried in public places was appalling It's time things were changed to take account of new procedures. Taking the pills in the comfort and safety of home should be permitted.

Anniebach Tue 17-Oct-17 19:54:15

I watched it Trisher, horrified that women cannot take the abortion pill in their own home, this really needs a change in the law . The woman Mo was so angry, did she perhaps feel guilt for having three abortions . I did feel sorry for the chap who wanted his child but his partner chose an abortion. I do think the time now needs to be reduced from
24 weeks

Ilovecheese Tue 17-Oct-17 20:17:53

Babies aborted after 24 weeks are in the main babies that will die soon after birth, often in pain. Usually very much wanted children whom the parents have decided should not go through that suffering

trisher Tue 17-Oct-17 20:34:10

I felt really sorry for all those women and a bit sorry for the bloke. I wondered about the guilt as well. But this stupid law that says women must take the pill in hospital is ridiculous and must be changed.

lemongrove Tue 17-Oct-17 20:46:21

Is it perhaps for their own safety, taking the pill in hospital, in case they haemorrhage ?

Serkeen Tue 17-Oct-17 20:48:26

What shocked me is that they are permitted to have the abortion up until 24 weeks when the baby is fully formed..

I wanted to cry I really did I know abortion is a personal thing and I am not here to judge anyone at all but if you are going to have an abortion at least do it at the beginning

I find it so hard to contemplate a Doctor performing this on a fully formed baby sad

trisher Tue 17-Oct-17 20:49:58

No lemongrove it's because the law says that abortion performed anywhere except in a hospital or clinic is a criminal act, so the pills have to be taken in hospital. In fact the women begin to miscarry as they are going home, one was on a bus another in a supermarket. Horrific!

Serkeen Tue 17-Oct-17 20:54:55

Also it is hard to accept abortion for me, because the baby can not speak for themselves and have no say if they should live or die

I appreciate that in some circumstances abortion may seem the only way out if one has been attacked but to have an abortion because it is not a good time for you to have a baby is a bit harsh on the baby

This is just IMHO and we are all entitled to our opinion

lemongrove Tue 17-Oct-17 20:58:31

That’s really horrible and shocking trisher?I had expected them to stay in hospital until it was over.

stitcheroo Tue 17-Oct-17 20:59:07

The vast majority of abortions are performed before 13 weeks. Those rare ones done after 20 weeks are usually wanted pregnancies whose parents have made the very difficult decision due to medical reasons. These diagnoses often aren't picked up on until the 20 week anomaly scan which is why they occur later. Women aren't sitting around waiting until 24 weeks to terminate because they think it will be fun.

Serkeen Tue 17-Oct-17 20:59:19

one of the women in the programme had had three abortions!! and went on to say "well its my body and I shall do with it what I please"

lemongrove Tue 17-Oct-17 21:00:16

And really, no point in taking the pills in a hospital in that case, better to be in your own home, with somebody close to you with you.

trisher Tue 17-Oct-17 21:20:07

exactly lemon but because no-one dared to de-criminalise it when the law was changed the restriction remains-bloody stupid isn't it!

Oldwoman70 Tue 17-Oct-17 21:48:53

If a woman chooses to have an abortion I would prefer to see it done under medical supervision - I hadn't realised the women were sent home after taking the pills, surely they should stay in the hospital until its all over?

paddyann Tue 17-Oct-17 22:09:57

and she's right serkeen its HER choice and it has to be signed off by two doctors so there must have been good reasons for them We cant condemn women for making a difficult choice when in some cases it would ruin not just their lives but their families. No one I know who has had a termination jumped up and down with glee about it,it was a bad episode in their lives and they live with it every day .Like others have said its only very extreme cases where its done up to 24 weeks ,would you ask that the mother carried a dead child or a child she knew had no chance of life until full term and had to watch it die? How cruel would that be ?

Anniebach Tue 17-Oct-17 22:19:45

There is not always a good reason for aborting unless not wanting a baby is a good reason, the signing off by two doctors is rubbish, it has become abortion on demand.

maryeliza54 Tue 17-Oct-17 23:39:21

I do think not wanting the baby is a good reason in itself whatever the specific reason behind that is. What’s wrong with abortion on demand ? It’s better than unwanted unloved children being born

Eloethan Wed 18-Oct-17 01:58:36

I think abortions are sometimes performed much later on because results of certain tests re foetal abnormality have to be done later, or only become apparent later in pregnancy.

I too was shocked to hear that some women end up miscarrying in public places - cafes, buses, etc. - because they can't make it home in time. I think it's absolutely appalling.

It is an unopular view I know but I believe that any woman who, for whatever reason, definitely does not want to be pregnant should be able to get a termination.

The man in that group felt that a partner/husband should have the legal right to deny a woman an abortion or - perhaps even worse - to force her to have one. I thought it was really shocking that he felt he should have control over another person's body. He said he had been pro-choice before it affected him personally. I thought that, rather than having a genuine belief in the rights of all unborn children, this suggested he was principally angry about his own powerlessness in that situation.

Serkeen Wed 18-Oct-17 02:39:33

I think I would be angry about the powerlessness That I could not save my child from abortion.

Serkeen Wed 18-Oct-17 02:50:19

Lets not mince our words here

I am sorry if this offends anyone as I do not wish to offend however abortion is a very selfish thing to do

I don't want the baby so I want it gone

I truly do not understand in this day and age that people still think abortion is ok It is Not

Put it which ever way you wish but at the end of the day you are stopping life there is a baby growing and you kill that baby, I hate killing insects because you have taken a life so much less should we take the life of an innocent un born child

My goodness British people are so hot on cruelty to animals and forget about cruelty to children YES children albeit unborn children but children none the less

I find it all quite barbaric to kill a baby in a womb because it is not convenient for the mother to have that child sad

I say again what would that unborn child say if they could speak!! Do you think that that unborn child would agree to the abortion NO do we not ALL deserve the right to live????

Personally I find it all hard to comprehend I really do and watching the programme left me traumatised

Anniebach Wed 18-Oct-17 03:40:25

The man didn't want control over a woman's body, he wanted HIS child to live.

three unwanted pregnancies is a good reason to abort? Three unwanted pregnancies seem rather careless , abortion wasn't made legal for this reason.

It is the woman's body but it is a child's life that is ended

maryeliza54 Wed 18-Oct-17 07:44:11

I can understand people believing that abortion is wrong but cannot understand why someone would feel they should be able to dictate what someone else does about an unwanted pregnancy. My body, my choice

paddyann Wed 18-Oct-17 09:52:12

so SERKEEN would YOU take on the cost ,in time and money to bring up even ONE of these "babies" who were unplanned/unwanted? Far better the pregnancy is terminated at an early stage BEFORE it becomes viable than that there are more children in poverty born ...and before you start on about contraception ..its not always reliable or successful.I know this to be fact as I got pregnant TWICE while using not one but two contraceptives .I was told another baby would kill me so I was religious about my pill and condoms ...sadly I got pregnant .I miscarried both times at 9 weeks ...and I can assure you I wasn't CARELESS at all .r

MinniesMum Wed 18-Oct-17 10:01:10

I didn't watch the programme as I knew it would lead to painful memories. After an exploding appendix rendered my right fallopian tube and ovary completely useless and the other one not so good either, I underwent various procedures at the infertility clinic. After one rather painful one, I was lying in bed when the woman in the bed next to me got a visit from the doctor. He pointed out that this was abortion no 8 and isn't it time she stopped this. She giggled and said "I just can't help myself". I sobbed quietly to myself when I heard this.
Surely most women can ask themselves a few questions.
Am I sexually active Yes/No
If Yes, then am I ready to bring a child into the world Yes/No
If No then why on earth can't they get their feckless, irresponsible backsides down to the Family Planning clinic which is FREE.
I did have a much wanted baby in the end - a boozy cruise down the Rhine did the trick, but I will never forget that woman or the anger I felt and still feel.
I do make an exception for rape, incest and non-viable foetuses - that should be what the abortion act is for.

damewithaname Wed 18-Oct-17 10:06:11

No to abortion. Many many couples out there who cannot have have children, there is always the adoption process.
