Vera on ITV, Sunday night

She seems to get scruffier with each series. I don't know how she manages to waddle run with all those layers of clothes, open mac and a skirt flapping around her knees.

I couldn't watch Shetland either , it was nothing like the books

I agree, her clothes don't get any better, but I'm sure her face has benefitted from a bit of make up. Anyway, I thought her skin looked good. Re, the Shetland books and TV series, Jimmy Perez has black hair in the books, so why didn't the actor who played him, dye his hair?

Vera is a fantasy! She wouldn't make Sergeant in today's CID, never mind Inspector. She'd have been put out to grass long ago!

I think she has softened BUT really enjoyable tv drama at last returns.

Team work loves the cases and her team love her!

In 30 years of living in the north east I've never met anyone with an accent like Vera's.
Compulsive viewing though to spot the locations, especially last night AA's part of the action was in the boat shed at Tynemouth sailing club where MrA is a keen member

I thought Vera's accent slipped occasionally last night, which is unusual. It's certainly easy watching.

Bit too simple I think ....but I ll give it another go I m guessing they are stand alone episodes can't say I m chomping at the bit though

The books somehow are better, but then books generally are. I find these dramatisations a bit slow. I like Brenda Blethyn as an actress, but she doesn't match the description of Vera in the books

I was so excited that Vera was back but DH chatted all the way through about how he couldnt follow the plot and insisted his lack of understanding was nothing to with 8 pints of lager, i was so glad he fell asleep 15 mins from the end. He may very well be Vera's next case !

Is a mourning Ring common knowledge?
I had never heard of such a thing.
I now have seen several, some are very beautiful on Google.
I am not sure that I would recognise one on a black & white photo in a newspaper .

I thought that last night's episode was a bit slow. Is it me or does the inside of her house make her look totally destitute?

Is it my imagination, but was Brenda Blethyn looking younger than in previous series? After Line of Duty it was a relief to turn over to ITV+1 to watch the much slower-paced Vera!

When Vera first started she did look older and careworn and very old fashioned. Brenda Blethyn is a very attractive woman and when we saw her doing a charity appeal on tv a few days ago I did a double take to make sure it really was "Vera".
Perhaps she will have a love life written in!!

I was too full after a lovely lunch cooked by DD so thought it better to save Line of Duty for another night.

Vera is always just right for a Sunday evening slump.

I think it's to emphasise the fact Charleygirl that she has no interest in normal family life or comforts - except alcohol. That's why there's the continuing thread about her lack of interest in her partner's young child and how she always has an excuse not to go to social gatherings.

I love Vera, but it does tend to send me to sleep!!

I love Vera but last night was rather slow.

I like Vera. It is good to have central character roughly the same age and shape as me, with a simlar disdain for fashion. However although I am still working in my seventies as is Brenda Blethyn, I suspect that there are very few, if any DCIs our age who haven't been pensioned off.

I like Vera too. Enjoyed last nights episode, just right for Sunday evening.

I love the programme too. The storylines aren't perfect, but neither were the later Shetland ones. I got to book five of Shetland and stalled completely, having devoured the others. Nothing about it gripped me. But I enjoyed the TV series and although Douglas Henshall has none of the Mediterranean good looks of Perez in the books, I think he was 'right'. I've deliberately not read any of the Vera books yet.

And I want her hat!!

But am I the only one who has never heard of a Mourning Ring ?
