Anyone looking forward to this? I've just finished the book-it was thoroughly gripping.

Can't wait! Sunday night at 9pm.

Perhaps he tops the colleague who raped her and she is being done for conspiracy.
I haven't read the book so that is a guess btw.

Although, if he is a spook, I would have thought he could get rid of someone without being found out.

I think one of the things which failed to come out in the TV version very much is her belief that he is something to do with security and this develops so she believes he is a spook. So the first scene in the chapel she is intrigued by someone who has access to it. She goes on to think he is security at parliament and later a spook. The element of mystery and risk just didn't come across, poor script writing I think and someone more mysterious in the role would have helped. He didn't have the air of authority someone with special access in parliament would need. It's also one of the problems of making a drama from a book written in 1st person, and it's not done very well here. Emily Watson did her best but with very little support.

Gemmeg if sexual passion is having a quicky in the broom cupboard with a slimy man with his foot in a bucket I m glad I missed out on it

I m so glad some others found the conversation mumbly at times

One thing I don't understand is why they changed the husband's name from the perfectly ok one in the book.

Another thing-how the hell does she manage London in those heels?

And finally-why is her kitchen so bloody untidy?

Jalima Tue 24-Jan-17 23:11:36

She has no time to tidy the kitchen gettingonabit !!

She is spending every spare moment in cloakrooms, in cupboards and up alleyways

What a boring programme, every time they had their 5 second coming together, frequently where they could be discovered, I muttered not again. Life's too short for such drivel.

NanKate Sun 29-Jan-17 21:59:15

Episode 1 - Slow going, repetitive vertical sex in dark dank places, yucky lover, only heard the words as I used my earphones on my Ipad. However I want to know what happens next, let's hope it moves along a bit quicker.

BlueBelle Sun 29-Jan-17 22:40:48

Well what did anyone think of tonight's programme ?
I actually can't warm to her she's depressingly dull when she speaks I still find some of the dialect indistinguishable too

Jalima Sun 29-Jan-17 23:24:11

Actually, I enjoyed it more tonight and warmed to him a bit more too.

Of course, he can't be a spook as so far it has only been her assumption and he has been non-committal about it all.
Thank goodness it is only in four parts.

mumofmadboys Sun 29-Jan-17 23:26:13

How does George know her mobile no? I wondered if her lover was sending the messages and the flowers?

Jalima Sun 29-Jan-17 23:29:57

I think she has two mobiles, one for work/everyday life and I would presume George knows the number as he works with her and a separate one (in the drawer in her study) for the lover.

Oldgreymare Mon 30-Jan-17 00:14:16

2nd/spare phone given to her by her 'lover' to send and receive calls to/from him alone.

mumofmadboys Mon 30-Jan-17 00:28:57

Thanks. I need to concentrate more!!

Eloethan Mon 30-Jan-17 00:42:46

I think it was quite gripping tonight and a bit scary too.

BlueBelle Mon 30-Jan-17 06:17:09

I did much prefer this episode to last weeks but not really warming to the characters so much yet, I agree Jalima slime ball did came across better I presume he has that room/ house as his place to take his conquests
What's he doing in the rapists house is he in trouble insider or are they colluding and who opened the car door? And help me out who is the woman shouting in the court house right at the end?

Alima Mon 30-Jan-17 06:27:51

I thought the second episode was very good and I like the way the actress portrays Yvonne. I know some of you find the lover a bit of an oily swine, I am on the fence on this one but wonder if it is because he dyes his hair which looks very unnatural, helmet head. Sorry BB, can't help with the shouty lady unless it is George's wife?

gettingonabit Mon 30-Jan-17 07:38:42

I think the shouty woman is x's wife. guesses wildly.

dogsmother Mon 30-Jan-17 07:59:36

I think X may have killed him, and left evidence of her, and shouty lady is George's wife.
X I'm still not sure about, she thinks he's a spook, but ......Roll on next week.

whitewave Mon 30-Jan-17 09:15:44

I think George kills x and then she kills George. Or she finds they are in cahoots and kills them both or her husband is driving by and gets into an argument with her and she kills him. Haven't a clue!!

Might get the book though.

TerriBull Mon 30-Jan-17 09:35:01

It picked up pace last night, I do remember the book gathered momentum as it progressed and turned into a real page turner.

trisher Mon 30-Jan-17 10:41:59

I really liked the book and have found this adaptation a bit lacking in tension and suspense. I'm not sure the flashes of court appearances really help. I sort of liked this weeks but still think he is a bit lacking as a hero. One of the things I realised is that in the book you only get her impression of him and her ideas about him being a spook and that she is being drawn into something dangerous. Suppose it is difficult to portray someone who is originally just in someone's head.

mumofmadboys Mon 30-Jan-17 11:50:29

What is a spook ?

willsmadnan Mon 30-Jan-17 12:10:00

I thought it was much better this week, but still a bit slow, but that's the 'slow burn' of a psychological thriller I suppose.
The last quarter seemed a bit weak IMO. Would you park your car outside your victim's house while your lover- turned- hit man went inside to do 'whatever'? How come the mysterious lover was admitted into the house with seemingly no questions ? And..... did anyone else notice the subtle hint .... the dog sitting quietly in the window? If someone in the house was being attacked it would be going mad. Does Mr X actually live there? Surely it was the house George was dropped of at after hiring a cab to take Yvonne home?
I don't think for a minute Mr. X is a spook, or even in the civil service at all.... probably an estate or letting agent in real life..... so he can access empty properties at will, such as the down market flat he directed Yvonne to. Also, who would set up a meeting with a so-called rape advisor in a cafe??? So many things not right!!
I haven't read the book, and I'm resisting the urge to download it as I really want to see next Sunday if my amateur sleuthing puts me in the Miss Marple league.wink

pensionpat Mon 30-Jan-17 12:23:30

A spook is a spy. MI6. I loved the TV series. N

mumofmadboys Mon 30-Jan-17 13:29:04

Thanks Pat.
