I was so looking forward to this new series as I think all the actors are really good, especially Shaun Evans and Roger Allam. But I didn't enjoy it at all. The plot was so convoluted and totally unrealistic that I got confused and bored. I do hope it picks up.

What did others think?

I agree actually. We love the programme usually, but the ridiculous plot spoilt it.Also do the Thursdays have to go on acting as if their adult daughter has died, instead of which has taken herself off for some 'time out' after the trauma at the bank.
Still, the acting was as good as ever and I do like the young Max ( pathologist) and his little quips ( just like the older Max, in Morse,)also like Chief Super Bright.
It was a turgid start to the series though.

I still enjoyed it though. I couldn't remember what had happened to Joan though. What about their son too?

Ana Fri 13-Jan-17 21:34:53

And why didn't Morse's promotion application papers get sent? Who was responsible for that?

LadyGracie Fri 13-Jan-17 22:01:54

I enjoyed it, I googled to find out what happened to the daughter, I couldn't remember either. What has that officious boss in uniform got against Morse, I think it was him who withheld the promotion papers.

I wondered why the son wasn't there as well. It was so boring I can't even remember what happened.

I couldn't get the Beatles 'She's Leaving Home' out of my head though.

I slept through most of it.

rosesarered Sat 14-Jan-17 08:58:51

The son went off ( with the family's blessing) to join the army ( National Service?)
It wasn't Bright ( top brass in the police are always in uniform) who kept back the exam papers, but somebody at the exam board, as Morse and Thursday had made enemies.
No sleeping, and keep up at the back there! grin

Thanks roses!

I like it ,its not as good as Morse but you can tell its from the same stable ,its quite a gentle programme that draws you in even though its about murder. Its not like the Douglas Henshall/Martin Compson detective story that was on last month ,cant remember what it was called but it kept me glued for the hour every week and it was the fastest hour in the week .I am old enough(just) to remember the Peter Manuel case so maybe that was a factor

felice Sat 14-Jan-17 10:50:35

I have to catch this on one of the Dutch/Flemish channels and the last one I saw Morse was sitting in a Jail cell. have I missed a lot?

TerriBull Sat 14-Jan-17 13:58:38

My husband likes Endeavour for the old cars and the period feel, I don't enjoy the stories don't engage me as say Unforgotten does, where the momentum builds. these whole episodes are too long, too pedestrian, maybe Morse should be left as it was so we just remember the excellent John Thaw, that's not to say the young actor who plays him isn't good.

Nelliemoser Sat 14-Jan-17 15:22:17

I thought I had posted on here yesterday! My tablet keps losing things. I like the program but what happened to Inspector Thursday (Roger Allam)?
At the end of the last series he seemed to be coughing up his lungs with ?Lung cancer and now he is back working.

I really like the character and the actor but such a sudden change to a story line has annoyed me.
I know it's just a story but why suddenly change the story line. This makes this piece of drama seem even less likely to be true, despite knowing it is all fiction IYSWM.

Ana Sat 14-Jan-17 15:53:32

feice, the series that's just begun here is series 4, so I think you're either at the end of series 2 or the beginning of series 3!

rosesarered Sat 14-Jan-17 15:59:04

Nellie Thursday was shot in the last series, and the bullet entered his lungs. Finally, he coughed it up ( last series) now he is well on the mend.smile

NanKate Sat 14-Jan-17 16:14:52

Well I loved it. smile So good to be back in Oxford.

Women's expectations weren't that high in the 60s, as shown by Mrs Thursday getting herself a 'little cleaning job'.

I must admit I didn't like Thursday being so abrasive with Morse. I suspect things will get back to normal with the next episode.

gulligranny Sat 14-Jan-17 19:46:37

I loved it too. I bought DH the entire collection of Inspector Morse as he didn't see them back in the 1980s, but we also love this and Lewis too. It's great to see such good acting, such good stories and above all such stunning photography, Oxford shown at its beautiful best.

BTW, Nelliemoser, Inspector Thursday, whilst coughing up his lungs, managed to cough up the bullet that was lodged there that they couldn't operate on, which is why he is now rather chipper!

Nelliemoser Sun 15-Jan-17 00:33:37

Thank you for clarifying that but it seems odd that no one had not mentioned it. How on earth do you get a bullet in your lungs and not notice. Did he not ever go to the doctors about the cough ? It's a just a story NellieM.

PRINTMISS Sun 15-Jan-17 08:54:34

I enjoyed it,but the other half is really getting hard of hearing (although he IS NOT going deaf you understand) and had difficulty hearing what was going on - I just read the sub-titles, something the other half cannot do because of his poor eyesight - oh! he does suffer! Some of it was again in the dark, the latest trend, but on the whole it was all part of the story. No doubt the reason delayed posting of the papers will be revealed.

BlueBelle Mon 23-Jan-17 07:19:20

I didn't get into it so flipped over to something else

Christinefrance Mon 23-Jan-17 08:38:07

I struggled a bit with last night's episode but will continue to watch as I found it enjoyable in the main. It is a bit strange that the Thursdays are so wrapped up in their daughter's disappearance but never mention their son.

felice Mon 23-Jan-17 09:39:58

Thanks Ana, it is not on just now so will just keep an eye out for more episodes, trouble is the different channels buy at different times so it all gets a bit confusing.
I do like the programme.

seacliff Sat 04-Feb-17 22:52:05

I just watched the last one and really enjoyed it, I have only seen about 4 episodes though. Sheila Hancock was in this one, as an old witch! It has grown on me.

Jane10 Sun 05-Feb-17 07:56:13

I enjoyed this series too. Such good characters.

Charleygirl Sun 05-Feb-17 09:09:34

Cannot say that I enjoyed any of the story lines. There was little else on to watch so I persevered, mainly because I loved the original Morse with John Thaw.
