I just love this image and the words. Shows his wry sense of humour.

I came to his music later in life - in my 50s, but I so wish I'd done so earlier. He was a poet, musician, gentleman and could hold a crowd in the palm of his hand just by doffing his ubiquitous trilby. Not many could do that. I was lucky enough to see him live twice - truly sublime experiences.

I 'sort of' know what earlier folk mean about being the first to announce a death ... it's strange, isn't it. I know I was reluctant to say anything on FB till someone else had. Not sure why.

Fair enough Grumppa - he was never likely to be your cup of tea. I think his lasting fans were those who heard him before they had properly grown up - still very impressionable! Anyway, time I stopped wallowing in nostalgia and dragged myself out of bed....

I'm another lifelong LC fan. My facebook profile picture is a photo of a bird on a wire which I took on Hydra, an island which has associations with Leonard. I know his music isn't to everyone's taste but I love the man, the poetry, and the music.

grumppa Sat 12-Nov-16 08:08:45

I was past my 21st birthday before LC recorded his first song, Fitzy54.

Maggiemaybe Sat 12-Nov-16 07:34:46

"better" grin

Maggiemaybe Sat 12-Nov-16 07:34:02

And as Callgirl1 says, Hallelujah by better voices just isn't the same.

Maggiemaybe Sat 12-Nov-16 07:14:36

Well, I stick by what I said. To me, his voice was wonderful. Gravelly, sexy and intense, and perfect for his lyrics.

Fitzy54 Sat 12-Nov-16 00:14:38

I should have added, before your 21st birthday!

Fitzy54 Sat 12-Nov-16 00:10:33

Grumppa, you found LC far too late in life. You needed to listen to him with one or two close friends in the early hours after a great party.

I was a fan and saw him in concert 3 times. He gave a wonderful performance singing so many songs with just a few very talented musicians and a couple of backing singers. What an atmosphere he created. He made you feel like he was singing just to you. I'm very sad that he has died.

SueDonim Fri 11-Nov-16 23:05:52

Leonard Cohen himself said he didn't have a great voice and that he could only sing four notes. He knew his limits!

merlotgran Fri 11-Nov-16 22:24:12

I wouldn't say he had a wonderful voice....I did like, 'Dance Me To The End Of Love' though.

grumppa Fri 11-Nov-16 22:08:25

Leonard Cohen's songs had passed me by until this morning. I didn't feel I'd missed much.

Maggiemaybe Fri 11-Nov-16 21:38:37

I loved Leonard Cohen. Feeling very nostalgic and sad listening to his wonderful voice tonight.

One of my greatest regrets is not seeing him live when he toured the UK.

paddyann Fri 11-Nov-16 18:21:03

you're right dont know why I wrote Marc, except I was listening to Marc Cohn last night .sorry

matson Fri 11-Nov-16 18:20:31

A unique poet , songwriter and singer, will be greatly missed, reunited with his Marianne.

callgirl1 Fri 11-Nov-16 17:59:41

Still the only version of Hallelujah worthy of a listen. RIP.

Candlefran Fri 11-Nov-16 17:28:54

I thought he was a completely different person to what he turns out to be.

Cherrytree59 Fri 11-Nov-16 17:26:14

paddyann bit confused
I know there is a Marc Cohen, but Leonard Cohen's son is called Adam.

Rinouchka Fri 11-Nov-16 16:32:14

So agree paddyann. A true poet . Much more so than Bob Dylan ( although I like him as well).

paddyann Fri 11-Nov-16 15:57:20

I've listened to his music sinnce my teens ,love all his albumms and just ordered his latest yesterday .Nothing to beat a low lit room a glass of red and some Leonard Cohen on the hifi .I have his sons albums too ,Marc Cohen, and the appple hasn't fallen far from the tree.I know his music isn't everyones style ,I have a friend who calls it music to slit your wrists too,but I believe the man is on the the 20th centuriies greatest poets annd lyricists

TerriBull Fri 11-Nov-16 15:56:48

I've loved Leonard Cohen's music for such a long time, particularly Suzanne. One of my sons is also a great fan and was lucky enough to meet him and told me he was as wonderful as his music. Another great artist gone in 2016, his legacy will live on.

Bluecat Fri 11-Nov-16 15:33:18

RIP, Leonard. I loved him so much. Evidently he saw the way the world is going, and decided it was time to leave.

SueDonim Fri 11-Nov-16 15:31:41

I've loved Leonard Cohen since forever, it feels, and I was lucky enough to see him in concert three years ago. When you examine his songs there is much humour and wry comment on life in them. He 'gets' the human condition.

I don't understand the comment above about announcing a person's demise. Someone has to be first, surely, unless we're to be kept in the dark? confused
