There is a new series this Autumn, the friends fifteen years on. I am unsure if I am pleased or not !

Has anyone ever heard James Nesbitt do any other accent? I thought actors had to be versatile.

Anniebach Wed 24-Aug-16 18:32:43

Richard Burton managed Ana smile

Ana Wed 24-Aug-16 18:41:54

Sometimes he toned down his accent a lot, though. In fact, I'm sure he played parts where he spoke with a thoroughly English accent.

Ana Wed 24-Aug-16 18:43:01

Anthony Hopkins likewise.

Anniebach Wed 24-Aug-16 21:19:29

Ana, Burtons accent came through in every film, Hopkins is good at changing his accent I agree and Martin Sheen manages too

Last in the series last night sad I will miss it.
The scenes in the shop (no spoilers) were unnecessary but the rest was of the episode was as good as ever, right to the end. Great cast, great writing.

Yes a very good series. Glad they're doing another one.

DaphneBroon Tue 25-Oct-16 08:05:17

I can't believe I missed it! I was so angry at BBC2 for cancelling University Challenge and Only Connect in favour of Springwatch I switched the damn thing off and read a book instead! ???

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 25-Oct-16 09:08:15

It was SO good

Charleygirl Tue 25-Oct-16 09:26:17

I am going to miss it also.

Greyduster Tue 25-Oct-16 09:42:25

I'll have to get it on catch up. We promised GS we would put a film on instead, so ended up watching Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief, the by the time I had finished reading him a bit of Harry Potter it was half past nine! I didn't know they were making another series. Good news!

Ana Tue 25-Oct-16 09:47:43

I loved this series, but am not so sure about another one. I think it might lose its magic.

Lona Tue 25-Oct-16 10:06:40

I agree Ana, this series was good, but I don't think they could keep going without it becoming silly, which is what usually happens.

Jalima Tue 25-Oct-16 10:29:05

at BBC2 for cancelling University Challenge and Only Connect in favour of Springwatch

It was Autumnwatch Daphne grin
but it could have been a repeat because I am sure I have seen the Sika deer footage before

I enjoyed Cold Feet, I didn't think any of it was over-done (yet) but perhaps they should leave it there because it could become OTT.
The birthday party made me laugh; I have a friend whose husband arranged a really special trip abroad to somewhere she longed to re-visit for a 'landmark birthday' treat. The trouble was that she was a year younger too!!

I puzzled over Jimmy Nesbitt's accent too in a previous episode when he said he and Pete were at school together. Although I do know people who have moved when youngish and never lose their original accents.

ninathenana Tue 25-Oct-16 13:11:48

I hadn't even thought about Jimmy's accent.
My mum moved to the SE from Bristol when she was 11. She still had a West country accent when she died at 86.

DIORisme167 Tue 25-Oct-16 13:18:01

I am really enjoying the new series. Very difficult to "age" the characters and still keep cohesion, Only one down to it - cannot stand Adam's latest love. Very good to look at but those dropped aitches and glottal stops!! Total put off.

Ana Tue 25-Oct-16 13:43:22

Well, the series is set in Manchester...although Pete seems to be the only one with a bit of a northern accent - Jenny's is really strange! grin

Jalima Tue 25-Oct-16 13:49:56

I like Adam's potential girlfriend!!

I thought Fay Ripley's accent was fine, and Manchester City Council must think it's OK too:
And her proudest moment? Being asked by Manchester city council to be the voice of their car park machine.
grin

However, I will say my dear friend from Manchester tends to say 'hospikal' and 'likkle' and I haven't heard anyone pronounce them like that on the show!

Ana Tue 25-Oct-16 13:54:11

Well, Fay Ripley was brought up in the Home Counties and doesn't sound Mancunian to me! I think the actress who plays Tina is actually from Liverpool.
