I listened to the London Male voice choir on the Today programme ( on Friday ) with John H sing such a well known song . Apologies for my ignorance but can someone give me the title please?

ninathenana Sun 03-Jul-16 12:19:32

Sorry I didn't see it .
A Welsh male voice choir can reduce this English woman to tears.

Atqui Sun 03-Jul-16 12:36:12

Yes so emotive

Atqui Sun 03-Jul-16 12:36:29

I need it on my I pod

Anniebach Sun 03-Jul-16 12:57:25

It was Calon Lan. Means pure heart

Anniebach Sun 03-Jul-16 12:59:47

Ninathena , try Myfynwy , guaranteed to make you cry

Atqui Sun 03-Jul-16 15:15:20

Thanks Annibach

Anniebach Sun 03-Jul-16 15:19:48

Your most welcome Atqui, I would say it's the second most popular Welsh song /hymn in Wales , others would the first

annie I think Cwm Rhondda must be the best-known?

Lovely to hear Calon Lân being sung by the Welsh fans in France though.

My daughter had the Caerphilly Male Voice choir to sing at her wedding in Bath. She refused to have Myfanwy as it always makes her cry. But did have that counting goats one ( anyone know what it's called) as we all left the church.
Lovely it was too.

gettingonabit Sun 03-Jul-16 16:16:31

bbevan that's Oes Gafr Eto?.

Anniebach Sun 03-Jul-16 16:23:42

gettingonabit, yes Cwm Rhondda is the most well known because it's sung at rugby matches, I was thinking of choir recordings and Welsh songs

gettingonabit Sun 03-Jul-16 16:29:50

annie then I think it must be Myfanwy. Everyone seems to know that.

Nelliemoser Sun 03-Jul-16 16:42:24

Annibach Myfanwy is my favourite a totally beautifully sad tune.

I can sing "Sospan Fach" all through and a good go at "Oes Gafr Eto" Two years living in Cardiff and learning evening class Welsh. But it was over 40 yrs ago. Songs stick with you though.

Anniebach Sun 03-Jul-16 16:54:07

Myfynwy is my all time favourite, it was my lullaby as a tiny. My children's and my grandchildrens

Good for you Nellie. gettingonabit, do you think Calon Lan is known more than Myfanwy to sing? I learned it in the infants school . Myfanwy is the favourite to listen to?

gettingonabit Sun 03-Jul-16 17:03:57

anniebach I think Calon Lan's more of a rabble rouser. Hence why it's so popular at the rugby, I suppose. Same with Cwm Rhondda. And Sospan Fach is a rugby song, really. We're not used to having the Welsh football team doing so well abroad, are we?

I don't like Myfanwy much. My favourite tearjerking Welsh song is a relatively modern one-*O Gymru*.

Atqui Sun 03-Jul-16 17:53:46

Well, I think I'll get a CD of them all, although listening on you tube there are many different renditions (is that the word?)

Anniebach Sun 03-Jul-16 18:26:29

Which ever you choose Atqui, enjoy

BBbevan Mon 04-Jul-16 15:56:56

Thank gettingon We used to sing it at school

mrsmopp Tue 05-Jul-16 16:50:56

Didn't Only Boys Aloud win BGT with Calon Lan?
And Simon Cowell said he'd never heard it before.

I loved Only Boys Aloud.
And Men of Harlech.
I find the Welsh national anthem very stirring, much better than God Save the Queen.

mrsmopp Tue 05-Jul-16 16:52:55

At Hyd y Nos is wonderful, beautiful lyrics and melody.

Anniebach Tue 05-Jul-16 20:50:38

All Welsh hymns and songs are beautiful smile

I agree - the Welsh seem to have music in their blood. More than most nations that I know of. Except perhaps the Italians.
Englishmen seem to be too selfconscious to sing - there's always a shortage of men in mixed choirs.

Anniebach Tue 05-Jul-16 22:27:31

We are a smallish market town but have a male voice, female voice, mixed voice, cathedral choir, chapel choir, school choirs . A school near my home always hold their harvest festival then bring the fruit and veg in parcels to sheltered accommodation houses and their choir sings a harvest hymn as the boxes are delivered , so sweet

Cwm Rhonnda was sung to great effect at my cousin's funeral in Bridgend a couple of years ago.

Much longer ago, we had lost a Rugby match against a team in Essex, in spite of the best efforts of two new members of the team, a Welsh scrum half called Dai and a prop called Ron. After a few pints Ron began to sing quietly to himself.

"That's a sad song, Ron," said Dai.

"It's the saddest song I know apart from Myfanwy."

"Why are you singing a sad song, Ron?"

"Because we lost."

Let's hope there is no reason to sing Myfanwy after the football tomorrow night.
