OH was in bed most of weekend feeling rough. Very unlike hi me to take to his bed. When he surfaced Sunday afternoon I suggested we watch something previously recorded to take his mind off feeling ill/cheer us up. We love holidaying in Greece and watched Mamma Mia and both enjoyed it and felt much better. Even the singing (!) made us laugh. What film cheers you up?

Strictly Ballroom. Don't know how many times I have watched it. Sometimes I have just come across it part way through and can't help watching it again! We even use the catchphrase "It's not strictly Ballroom!“ - done in a Barry Fife voice of course! grin

The weird thing is the song Love is in the Air played at the end. I hated it when it was originally released, but after watching Strictly Ballroom, it became one of my favourite songs because it invokes the same feel good mood as the film.

Other films are Dirty Dancing and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Sensing a theme here! grin

Love Actually the bit at the airport just makes me cry

Any Doris Day film especially where she sings The Deadwood Stage, was it Calamity Jane?

petra Tue 15-Dec-15 16:43:03

I went completely the other way the other day. First I watched: Still Alice, absolute heartbreaker about early onset Altzhiemers, then, in case I hadn't cried enough I went straight into: Cider House Rules. I felt like a rung out dish cloth.

Strictly Ballroom and About a Boy. Any of those Hugh Grant type films. Sleepless in Seattle. West Side Story....is that feel good? Miracle on 34th Street.

To divert the topic a bit.......We have introduced G C to a few black and white films. Moby Dick Basil Rathbone as Sherlock, 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes. They have enjoyed them,

Bridget Jones's Diary

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 15-Dec-15 16:58:27

Alima yes, it is Calamity Jane and I'll add it to my list too, along with My Fair Lady grin

It's a Wonderful Life. That dance scene near the end Brilliant. There again, anything with Jimmy Stewart.

Tegan Tue 15-Dec-15 19:30:03

It's such a LONG film isn't it. We decided to watch it one Christmas[never having seen it before]; started quite late in the evening and it seemed to go on forever. Since then we have been to see it at the cinema which was wonderful; everyone clapped at the end. I love Jimmy Stewart in How the West Was Won even though he was, by then too old for the character he portrayed. As a bit of a misery [and that's an understatement]feel good films, for me are sad ones....I too love The Cider House Rules. And a sweet little film called 'The Last Christmas' which I have on video. If I want to actually cheer myself up Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or most Muppet films have me in stitches.

annodomini Tue 15-Dec-15 19:41:05

Some Like it Hot, Local Hero, Muriel's Wedding, Love Actually. And Christmas wouldn't be quite complete without It's a Wonderful Life.

Sunshine in Leith.

Alima Tue 15-Dec-15 20:11:23

Is that the one The Proclaimers are in thatbags? Much prefer British films these days. Starting with the Rocky Films where I couldn't understand a word he said I have completely gone off American films.

janepearce6 Tue 15-Dec-15 20:38:31

I don't know what this says about me BUT I've never been able to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" - I start and find it so boring - I know, I know, I should be ashamed of myself but there, I've said it!!

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 15-Dec-15 20:50:50

Oooh! Sunshine on Leith! Another one for my list. grin

I hoped there would be a national tour of the musical after the film was released. I can still hope. smile

Deedaa Tue 15-Dec-15 21:43:20

Love Actually is my favourite feel good film, with Mama Mia if I want a bit of sunshine.

thatbags Tue 15-Dec-15 22:22:04

alima, Proclaimers songs used but sung by the cast, I think.

Anniebach Tue 15-Dec-15 22:29:51

James Stewart - for me then Harvy

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 15-Dec-15 23:05:59

Yes, Sunshine on Leith is the film version of the stage jukebox musical of the Proclaimers music.
